An award-winning author and screenwriter, he is the author of the critically acclaimed Master of War series of historical novels, and was shortlisted for the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize for The Last Horseman. He was longlisted for the same prize for The Englishman, the first book featuring ex-French Foreign Legionnaire Dan Raglan. David lives in Devon. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Gelungener Auftakt einer neuen Reihe über den 100. jährigen Krieg Der 100. jährige Krieg steht noch in seinen Anfängen, als der junge Steinmetz Thomas Blackstone vor die Wahl gestellt wird, entweder Tod durch den Strang oder als Bogenschütze mit ins Gefecht. Er entschließt sich dazu, sich den englischen Truppen anzuschließen und seinen König gegen Frankreich zu unterstützen. In der Normandie begreift er schnell, dass der Krieg nicht so einfach ist, wie es am Anfang geklungen hat. Die Schlacht von Crécy lehrt ihn, was dieses Wort wirklich bedeutet.„Das Blutige Schwert“ ist der Auftakt der neuen Reihe „Legenden des Krieges“ über den 100. jährigen Krieg. Der Autor David Gilman erzählt hier von einem jungen Steinmetz, der zunächst als Bogenschütze einberufen wird. Es wird geschildert, wie eben jener Thomas Blackstone in den Kriegsdienst kam und wie wichtig vor allem die Bogenschützen für die Engländer waren. Der Roman selbst ist unterteilt in drei einzelne Teile, in denen detailreich erzählt wird, wie es zum einen zur Schlacht bei Crécy kam, wie aus einem einfachen Steinmetz zunächst ein gefeierter Bogenschütze wurde und dann später sogar ein Ritter. Dieser erste Teil baut den Bogenschützen Thomas Blackstone zuzusagen zum Ritter auf. Der Leser lernt ihn und einige andere Protagonisten kennen. Mir hat gut gefallen, wie Thomas sich behauptet hat und wie er sich in der für ihn fremden Welt des Adels behauptet hat. Der Erzählstil von David Gilman hat mir dabei gut gefallen. Hier wird mal nicht verschnörkelt gesprochen, sonder immer frei heraus und mit deutlichen Worten. Gilbert lässt seine Protagonisten so reden, wie sie es wohl damals auch taten. Sie haben geschimpft, gespottet und sonst irgendwie versucht ihrer Angst Herr zu werden. Lebhaft schildert der Autor, wie es in diesem Feldzug zuging, wie die Menschen lebten und starben. Gilman hat nichts beschönigt und so manche Szene, war schon grausig zu lesen. Fast nebenbei erfährt man dann auch, wie dieser Krieg verlaufen ist, wer gegen wen gekämpft hat und vor allem, wie schwer es die einfachen Menschen in dieser Zeit hatten. Später, dann nach der großen Schlacht, hat Blackstone das große Glück seinem Leben eine ganz neue Wendung geben zu dürfen, er steigt zum Ritter auf. Und nicht nur das, auch trifft er auf die Liebe seines Lebens und sein Leben schlägt einen Weg ein, den er so wohl nicht erwartet hätte. Vielleicht gibt es hier das eine oder andere Quäntchen Glück zu viel, für den Protagonisten. Vielleicht ist sein Lebensweg bei allen Schwierigkeiten dann doch zu leicht geschildert. Es hat mir aber trotzdem gefallen, zu lesen, wie aus einem einfachen Bogenschützen ein Ritter werden konnte. Jemand der in der Lage war sein Leben neu zu gestalten und dabei auch ein wenig das Schicksal seines Landes beeinflussen konnte. Auch wenn Thomas Blackstone nur fiktiv ist. Ich jedenfalls bin gespannt wie sein Leben weiter gehen wird und was er noch alles erleben und durchstehen muss. Ein Nachwort zum Schluss, klärt noch schnell Fiktion und Wahrheit. Eine Karte zu Beginn ermöglicht einen schönen Überblick über den Verlauf der Kämpfe und die Wege der Ritter. Eine große Leseprobe ganz am Ende macht dann auch noch Lust auf den zweiten Band, der schon bald erscheint.
