About this audiobook

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable and quiet life. His contentment is disturbed one day when the wizard, Gandalf, and the dwarves arrive to take him away on an adventure.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End.

But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon…

The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the twentieth century.

Editor's Note

Iconic quest…

Bilbo Baggins, a respectable, well-to-do hobbit, lives comfortably in his hobbit-hole until the day the wandering wizard Gandalf chooses him to take part in an adventure from which he may never return. Shaped by ancient mythology, this exciting and earthy quest story (populated by dragons, dwarfs, monsters, and sorcerers) has engaging heroes and is the perfect place to start for anyone interested in jumping into Middle-earth.

I didn't realize this was an abridged version when I borrowed it from the library but it was really enjoyable. I felt like I was listening to the movie.
The audio though was all over the place. I can forgive the original but I feel like the new release could have edited the sounds better.

Never watch a movie before reading its related novel! It might spoil the novel for you (and I don't like a novel being spoiled!). I did that mistake in The Hobbit, and my journey through the novel became unexpected. The first reaction was - "Whoah! where is all the heroism of the dwarf king Thorin?". I found the novel dwarves whiny to the point of annoyance. Also, I admit that I missed the White Council meeting shown in the movie.

Having said that, its totally unfair to compare then novel that is so old to a movie that was made so recently. So, keeping aside my whiny tone, I loved the novel. Tolkien greatly characterizes Bilbo, starting from a timid, easy-living hobbit to a mature, brave one. However, I felt that the dwarves lacked a bit of details. The journey to the Lonely Mountain was gripping. No one will ever forget Bilbo's encounter with Gollum, and his acquisition (or stealing?) of The Ring. The courage of Bilbo really bloomed when he saved the dwarves from the spiders, after which he actually kept saving them from every living thing.

The demise of Smaug was disappointing. I felt like the whole build-up of the dragon during the story went in vain. However, the Battle of Five Armies was conversely interesting; my most favorite part after Bilbo and Gollum. Bard filled the place of a much required heroic Man.

I would have loved the showing up of the White Council's assault on Dol Guldur. However, I understand that story doesn't relate to our main character - The Hobbit.

What can one say? A charming children's book for adults, with hints of darker things to come in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

A great adventure - made even better now your imagination can put ‘faces’ to these characters due to the feature films. Absolutely fantastic!

Ah, now that was another fun listen! Enjoyed listening to this as much as I did the Lord of the Rings! Rob Inglis once again did an absolutely blinding job of narrating this one too! I could listen to him narrating a book all day!

I enjoyed this so much more the second time around and found myself more engaged and captivated with the story, the characters and more importantly, their journey. Maybe because I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much this time around that I read it with poor expectations, so therefore it could only go upwards. Whereas the first time around I went into it with such high expectations after binging the three Hobbit movies, that I was left disappointed.

This time around I took every opportunity possible to make my way through Bilbos journey as I was addicted to it. The narration was great and was one that just grasped me and brought the story to life. Now onto the next stage in this adventure and The Fellowship!

Well, my last book of last year was The Hobbit and it's the first book of this year, too.

I read it this time, instead of listening to an audiobook. I actually enjoyed reading it a bit more since it helped me absorb places and names a bit better. Oddly, though, I still didn't enjoy the second half of the book as much. I'm not really sure why. I like it up to Mirkwood but after that, I get a little restless until we meet Smaug. Maybe it's the way the elves treat Bilbo. They're kinda mean.

I also think the whole Bilbo-knocked-unconcious-so-the-author-doesn't-have-to-describe-a-battle-in-depth thing is funny and a good work around. Gotta love limited 3rd person POV.

The story is a classic but this audiobook has problems. It skips several chapters and repeats sections too. Rather hard to listen to. Scribd needs to check it’s content more carefully.

I guess Tolkien needs little recommendations. the audio is very good, the songs performed well. at times confusing when tone / pitch of voice isn't too consistent with characters.

It’s full of action, inspires courage, honesty, friendship, hard work, peace, kindness, loyalty and bravery. That’s why they call it a classic book it’s all about what is good, beautiful and true and against what is evil, ugly and deceitful. Besides all of that it contains hope, faith and love. It goes beyond that because contains temperance, temperance, fortitude justice and prudence.

The only concern I had if you may ask me is the songs , that was a little annoying , other than that the narrator did a wonderful job.
