About this audiobook

New York Times best-selling author Carla Neggers skillfully crafts emotional tales of suspense. Years ago, on her honeymoon in Maine, Abigail Browning's FBI agent husband Chris was killed. Immersing herself in her own police work, Abigail tried moving on, but she remained haunted by unanswered questions. Seven years later, on their anniversary she receives a phone call that suggests his murder wasn't a random act of violence, but a hit perpetrated by a serial killer.

CARLA NEGGERS

New York Times bestselling author Carla Neggers is always plotting her next adventure, whether in life or for one of her books. Her fertile imagination and curious nature make her ready for anything. It is also these qualities that sparked her love of reading as a child and continue to drive her passion for storytelling today. With her trademark blend of action, suspense and down-to-earth, realistic characters caught up in extraordinary circumstances, her novels never fail to take her readers on an exciting journey. Carla began writing as a youngster, when she'd grab a pad and pen and climb a tree to spin her stories. Growing up in western Massachusetts, she is the third of seven children. Just before she was born, her Dutch immigrant father and Southern-born mother packed up the car with two kids and all their belongings and headed north to start a new life. They settled in an eighteenth-century carriage house on ninety acres and began a long process of renovation. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she went on to major in journalism at Boston University, graduating magna cum laude. She enjoyed a brief stint as an arts and entertainment writer, then turned to writing fiction full-time and now has more than fifty books to her credit. Travel and research both play a large part in Carla's writing. She can often trace the germination of a plot to the exact moment of inspiration. “It's part of the fun of being a writer—you never know what will spark an idea. For example, on a trip to the Netherlands some years ago, we did a tour of a canal-like waterway,” she says. “I kept thinking—what would happen if a dead body floated by? What if it was an American? It's the way my mind works—around me, everyone else was admiring the quaint countryside. I was devising a murder.” Once a plot is hatched, the real researching begins. Her novels have taken her atop the northeast's highest peaks, onto a shooting range with a police academy instructor and across the world as she scouts out locations and seeks the authenticity that imbues her novels. The author's greatest pleasure comes in those moments when she feels she's gotten the story just right—when it all comes together on the pages of her book, exactly the way she's envisioned the tale in her mind. Then, when readers connect with the story, her satisfaction is complete. “Everything comes down to the finished book,” says the author. “When I hear from a reader that the story resonated, and that he or she had a great time reading it, I know I've done my job and done it well.” When she's not working on her next book, Carla enjoys traveling, hiking and kayaking. She's set out to become a “four-thousand-footer” by climbing all forty-eight peaks over four-thousand feet in the New Hampshire White Mountains, and she's always planning the next trip—and the next adventure—either of which just might inspire a new story. Carla lives in Vermont, where she and her husband have recently renovated their mountain house not far from picturesque Quechee Gorge.

    The Widow
    3 Stars

Seven years following the murder of her FBI agent husband on Mount Desert Island, Abigail Browning, now a detective with Boston PD, receives an anonymous phone call suggesting that strange things are happening in the quiet island community. With the help of search and rescue expert, Owen Garrison, Abigail stirs up old memories and old ghosts in her determination to expose a dangerous killer. Will she discover the truth before she becomes the next victim?

More of a mystery than romantic suspense.

Nothing much happens for the first 2/3 of the book as various characters are introduced, and their relationships with each other and their connections to Chris Browning are rehashed over and over. The investigation is rather lackluster as neither the local police nor the FBI seem particularly interested in capturing Chris’s killer. Although minor clues are interspersed haphazardly throughout the narrative, the obvious red herring distracts from these and make it difficult to determine the killer’s identity and motive.

Owen and Abigail’s romance is secondary and there is no real foundation to their attraction. Their chemistry is non-existent and they mostly appear to be going through the motions of falling in love without actually doing so. There is a wonderful potential for conflict stemming from Abigail’s unresolved feelings for her murdered husband and the fact that Owen is one of his oldest friends, but this never materializes.

All in all, a good premise but the execution is dull and uninspired. This author is not for me.

Carla Neggers is one of those authors that is able to spin a tale with many characters and have you end the story feeling as if you know everyone. That rates high with me as many authors will bandy people around willy nilly and I feel completely worn out or worse feel as if I need to keep notes so I know whose who. That is not the case here. Two families, lots of police and still I followed it and absolutely loved it!

It wasn't bad writing, but the story was boring to me so I dropped it.

This is the first of a trilogy that I picked up because the premise sounded interesting, if a bit light. I found the story slow to start, but once I was involved in the storyline, it moved faster. If anything, I think this book is to light for the storyline. Much more could have been done with it. I have the other two, and will give them a chance to see if the story picks up. If you fancy a light read....a few steps above a harlequin romance, try this one on for size.

This is the first, and the best book in Negger's FBI series. The heroine, Abigail, is a Boston police detective, but her father is FBI, as was then husband she lost on her honeymoon. For seven years she has continued to haunt the town where her husband was killed, and now she has received a phone call telling her that things are beginning again. The story has many plot twists and a surprise ending that keeps the reader involved until the end. I very much enjoyed reading this book.

I knew "who done it" from early on...well okay, it was a vague idea, with a couple back up characters thrown in as maybe's. I just couldn't get into this story that much. But it wasn't horrible.I have 6 days to wait until my books are even shipped...so now I must go and get more, or slowly go crazy from lack of reading. Darn Barnes and Noble! =)

Abigail returns to Maine to find the killer of her murdered husband, Chris. After only being married for 4 days, he was gunned down. Abigail is determined to solve this case that has remained open for 7 years.I chose this book to fulfill the "N" Author requirement for the A ~ Z Reading Challenge. I only finished it for that purpose as well, because under other circumstances this would have become a DNF read. The storyline seemed like something I would enjoy, but the manner in which it was solved was not. The characters were unappealing and the assumptions made throughout the book were hard to swallow. I will not even attempt to read another Neggers book. (2/5)Originally posted on: "Thoughts of Joy..."

While on her honeymoon at her husband's family cottage on the rocky main coast, Abigail Browning is brutally attacked and robbed and her husband is murdered. Seven years later, on her wedding anniversary, Abigail received a mysterious phone call in the restaurant in which she is dining telling her that "things are channging" in Maine. Now a NY detective, Abigail returns to the island determined to solve the murder of her husband. I was hooked from the first page in this entertaining mystery with it dash to romance.

This was very good. A high level of suspense. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see the outcome.

a mildly entertaining lightly suspenseful novel. It was given to me, and it was set on the coast of Maine, so I gave it a try. Didn't take long to read, and I will have utterly forgotten it this time next year.
