    Lois Duncan

    Lois Duncan (1934–2016) was an author of more than fifty books for young adults. Her stories of mystery and suspense have won dozens of awards and many have been named Best Books for Young Adults by the American Library Association. Among the many honors and accolades she has received for her work, in 2015, Lois Duncan was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America.  Duncan was born Lois Duncan Steinmetz in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; she grew up in Sarasota, Florida. By age ten she was submitting her work to magazines, and she had her first story published nationally when she was just thirteen. In 1994, Duncan released a nonfiction title, Who Killed My Daughter?, after her youngest child was killed in a crime that was never solved.

      This was summer reading for me during middle school ... many years ago. I remember not being able to put it down and becoming fascinated with the paranormal and magik worlds. Interests I carry to this day.

      I saw the movie version of this book recently and while the most entertaining thing about the movie was. Linda Blair's poofy hairdo the movie was reasonably close to the pot of the book. I found the book more enjoyable. A reasonably entertains YA thriller about a girl who's cousin comes to live with her family after a tragic car accident. Everyone is blown away by the cousin but the story's heroine, Rachel, realises really quickly that something is not right about this new cousin.

      Of course no one elevens her and thinks she's just jealous. The story deals with Rachel learning the cousins dark secret and trying to convince her family and save them for the threat.

      It's a quick read, with a fairly ordinary teenage lead. She was likeable enough, but there were times when she was rather whiny and annoying but given her circumstances in the story it's kind of understandable. There were times when she was trying to convince her parents particularly there USA something off about the cousin and they simply would not listen. The cousin starts off bland and shy but quickly steals Rachel's friends and boyfriend so naturally parents think she's just jealous.

      It was obvious where the plot is going but it was nicely twisty for a YA thriller. A fun read.

      This was the only book I had to read for school that I loved! I read this book in tenth grade and loved it! I was so able to connect to the character. The same time I read this book, my rotten, spoiled, selfish cousin lived with me. I so understand how Rachel was feeling. My cousin stole all my sisters friends and everything. My cousin even made my parents take her side all the time. Whenever I use to tell my parents how annoy she is, my cousin would twist it around, and make it seem like I was the mean person. What's even worse was that, I had to share a room with her! When I read this book, I had to laugh because it was so much like my life at the time. This book was amazing! True Story, By the Way.

      Summer of Fear is about a girl named Rachel whose family takes in her cousin Julia after she is orphaned. From the moment Rachel meets Julia she feels something is not right about her cousin, yet everyone else adores her. Even her boyfriend and her brother seem to be captivated by her. There is something sinister about this relation and Rachel is sure of it, she will go to great lengths to uncover Julia’s sinister secret; what she finds out would change her and her family forever and she must stop her plans before it is too late. This book was full of mystery and suspense along with a huge surprise at one point in the book (I will not say what it is for those who have not read the book). The book is thought provoking and a bit creepy. The story was well written and as always Lois Duncan does a fantastic job in creating a specific tone and emotion for the book.This book was a quick and easy read yet the story line was anything but light. It was original and was a great story. Throughout the book the reader is itching to know Julia’s true agenda; whether it is Rachel’s imagination or if she is indeed right about her cousin. The outcome does not disappoint

      This book was supremely creepy to me as a kid: the stranger / cousin who is somehow just not right, and turns out to be even wronger than imagined. Of course it also imprinted my brain with old-fashioned color advice: that redheads shouldn't wear pink.

      Lois Duncan's "Summer of Fear" is another suspenseful book from an author who has made a career out of writing YA books filled with suspense. The book, written in 1976, tells the story of typical teen Rachel and a new "family member" Julia. Julia, the daughter of her aunt is thrust into Rachel's life because of a horrible accident which killed both of her parents. Rachel has difficulty adapting to Rachel's arrival and subsequent taking over of her life. Mysterious things are happening and suspicious Rachel is desperate to discover all the secrets that Julia has brought with her...This is a decent book although the "shock" is at least partly obvious and Rachel's narration is very,very dated. Overall it would be a good recommendation for fans of teen suspense or for those middle/early-high school readers who enjoyed "I Know What You Did Last Summer".

      Rachel doesn't understand why she can't warm up to her recently-orphaned cousin Julia. Is it because Rachel's dog, Trickle, takes an immediate and intense dislike to her? Is it because Julia gets along so well with all of her friends--and her boyfriend? Is it because of the way Julia talks to Rachel's dad, more like a woman than a girl? Or is it something more sinister than Rachel can imagine?A fast-moving, nail-biting novel of suspense that will leave you hanging until the last chapter.

      Lois Duncan knows how to keep a reader in suspense! She provides enough clues to keep you a step ahead of Rachel, as she tries to prove to her family that cousin Julia is not the helpless victim of tragedy that she pretends to be. As her lone ally lies stricken and unable to help, Rachel must act alone, and quickly, to prove her instincts about Julia are true - that her cousin is not just different, but troubled and capable of real harm. I was surprised to be drawn into this book so quickly. The reader, as an outside observer, is sometimes able to see things that Rachel cannot, which adds to the suspense. This was also frustrating - knowing that Rachel was right, while her family would not believe her.

      Lois Duncan has a knack of pulling you into her stories and feeling the angst and frustration of her characters. As with most of her other books that I've read, she's done the same here. I could actually feel Rachel's frustration and anger at how her family and friends totally accepted Julia and wouldn't believe Rachel. I was a good halfway through the book before I had a clue of how things were going to end. Great book, full of suspense and very creepy.

      Summer of Fear is for a person who doesn't get scared easily. Julia, who is supposed t obe a very nice cousin, is acting extremely strange after just one week.
