About this audiobook
Andrew Lang
Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 – July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang’s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew’s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang’s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture “On Fairy-Stories.”

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow! I love this. Still enchants my imaginations, though it's ancient stories. Those middle eastern stories collected in this book is really fascinating and fun. I also love the fact that I learnt some stories I have not heard before. It's really an interesting book to read, especially for first time readers.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This volume reproduces the 1932 Modern Library edition, for which Bennett A. Cerf chose the most famous and representative stories from Sir Richard F. Burton's multivolume translation, and includes Burton's extensive and acclaimed explanatory notes.
The tales of told by Shahrazad over a thousand and one nights to delay her execution by the vengeful King Shahriyar have become among the most popular in both Eastern and Western literature, as recounted by Sir Francis Burton. From the epic adventures of "Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp" to the farcical "Young Woman and her Five Lovers" and the social criticism of "The Tale of the Hunchback", the stories depict a fabulous world of all-powerful sorcerers, jinns imprisoned in bottles and enchanting princesses. But despite their imaginative extravagance, the Tales are anchored to everyday life by their realism, providing a full and intimate record of medieval Islam.1 person found this helpful

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5As opposed to the majority of reviewers here, I didn't "read" this audiobook, only listened to it. My rating (1 star) is just meant to counterbalance the flood of gibberish that others produced to justify their 5 stars ratings.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Many listeners comment that they found the narration difficult.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5The accent is terrible, couldn’t bare a full minute. Please use people without an accent(or at least with a milder one) to publish an audio book next time.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Lovely accents but what on earth are they saying? It takes a particular voice to narrate a book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Thousand and One Nights, or The Arabian Nights in a large, generously illustrated volume that is meant to be a permanent part of a home or library collection. And rightly so, because this ancient collection of tales and fables from Persia, India, and the Arab world has, as Tarnowska writes in her foreword, “become a part of the world’s cultural heritage.” In them, the bride Shahrazade saves her own life, and that of countless other young women, by telling tales for one thousand and one nights to her new husband, the king Shahriyar. She begins with the tale of Aladdin and his wonderful lamp. For ages eight and older.
