    Ronald “Wrong” Pauley is a homeless man long fallen from grace.       Having enjoyed the first book in this series, Burning Man, I looked forward to reading Guardians of the Night. I am one of those people who are very happy that there are more and more mysteries being written that feature working dogs.Once again, I was treated to smart-aleck Gideon's ability to turn a phrase, and some of his acronyms are going to come in handy (NBH = Nobody Home; D-SAT = Didn't See a Thing). Readers are also treated to information and opinions on poetry, authors, and movies. I do know that I learned a lot about something important to the storyline, but I'm not going to say what it is so you can figure it out for yourself.I like Russell's way with a fast pace and how he puts a mystery together. There's plenty of misdirection in Guardians of the Night, and you have to pay attention to almost every little thing because it will be part of the solution to both cases by book's end. I also like Russell's characterizations-- especially those of Wrong Pauley, Elle, and the Reluctant Hero.There's only one thing that bugs me about this book: Gideon is still not paying attention to Sirius's behavior! You'd think if Gideon wound up in hot water a time or two, he'd learn that Sirius knows what he's barking about and pay attention. Maybe by book three?With the strength of Russell's characters and storylines, you know I'll be moving on to the third book in the series. Bring on Lost Dog!

      I enjoyed Burning Man so much, I was really looking forward to the next Gideon and Sirius book in the series. I was not disappointed. Once again, the plot moves quickly and smoothly along, keeping you on the edge of your seat wondering where the danger will come from next. The setting and atmosphere are so full and real that Los Angeles seems almost like another character in the story, and more and more backstory is revealed, making you feel even closer to this dynamic duo. I hope this series goes on forever.

      Allan Russell's second novel in the Gideon/Sirus series didn't disappoint. I would have to say that book 2 in the series was better than the first one. Character development of this unique detective team continues, and I have grown to like these two. The mystery develops when a homeless alcoholic claims to have had a celestial encounter. Our protagonist does not want to let go of his version of the world as he believes it to be, but is challenged when he has no explanation for the event.This detective mystery and police procedural is well written, and kept my attention.

Tasked to solve any case that seems strange or unusual they do the best they can to close each case that comes their way. While trying to find a Reluctant Hero who saved some elementary kids from a lone gunman Gideon and Sirius get a case about a homeless man who witnessed the murder of an angel. Both cases are interesting and twisty, but Gideon is like a dog with a bone. Or is that Sirius? Anyway, Gideon is determined to find the Reluctant Hero so the Mayor can present him with the key to the city and he’s more determined to figure out this angel business and bring a murderer to justice. But he’s playing with some people who think they are above the law and that can be a dangerous game to win.I went into this Gideon & Sirius book 2 with high hopes. I loved book 1 and I hoped it wasn’t a one-off. I was so glad to find another win! Gideon is working two cases and I love watching him solve said cases. He’s an excellent detective even if he sometimes has to get clues after dreaming yet again about the fire where he, Sirius and Ellis Haines (the Santa Ana Strangler) almost died. You see, some nights he relives that fire and when he wakes he has a vision. It could be his subconscious trying to tell him something or it could be something paranormal. Either way, he gets clues to his cases, but sometimes he doesn’t know how to interpret them. Very cool for me the reader. Not so much for Gideon.The plot is a good one. The whole angel thing? Loved it! And I loved how Gideon gnawed and gnawed at the Reluctant Hero case until he found what he was looking for. Oh, and the RH? I hope we see more of him. He’d be an awesome addition to the cast of characters. Speaking of characters, they’re great and not just props. There’s some romance and plenty of humor, too. If you like twisty mysteries well-seasoned with humor then I recommend this one. Don’t forget book 1, Burning Man, too. I hope this series is around for awhile.

      I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was full of interesting, developed characters. The relationship between Gideon and Sirius is utterly charming. I enjoyed Gideon's humor and his ability to come up with a song lyric for any occasion. The whodunit aspect kept me guessing, too.

      A smart and independent detective, his hero dog, and an intriguing plot. What's not to love about this combination?First, it's important to note that Sirius, Gideon's partner, is a dog. They spend a lot of time together, in which Gideon holds conversations with Sirius. He clearly loves his dog. I thoroughly enjoyed their relationship. But, if you're not a dog person, you might want to skip this book.The characters here are original, not weighed down with stereotypes. Russell clearly understands his characters' nature, which he passes on to readers by showing all the subtleties that make us individuals. This story has a complex, thought-provoking plot that is disturbing in its possibilities. The clues are sprinkled throughout, so we're able to solve the mystery along with Gideon. The pace is smooth, unhurried but also engaging. In the end, this is one of those fiction stories that will leave you questioning all the implications on our reality.
