About this audiobook
A deadly secret lurks in an island’s history, buried deep but not forgotten. And it is about to come to light.
Lucy Hall arrives in the Seychelles determined to leave her worries behind. The tropical paradise looks sun-soaked and picture-perfect—but as Lucy soon discovers, appearances can be very deceptive.
As black clouds begin to gather over what promised to be a relaxing family break, Lucy realises that her father stands in the eye of the coming storm. A shadow from his past is threatening to destroy all that he holds dear—including the lives of his loved ones.
A dark truth is about to explode into their lives, and that truth is going to hit them right between the eyes.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This novel was sent to me by the publisher Thomas and Mercer via Net Gallery. Thank you.Journey to Death is the first book in a new series by Leigh Russell. Her protagonist is 22 year old Lucy who is on vacation in the Seychelles with her parents George and Angela. She is recovering from being dumped by her fiancé of two years and the trip is, in part, to mend her broken heart. And that may be the first problem I had with this mystery. Lucy is constantly brooding over Darren to the point where I wanted to shout at her and say “Get over him! You’re acting like you’re 13! You’re lucky he broke up because you’re way too immature to get married!” She does suddenly grow a Nancy Drew backbone by the end of the book.It doesn’t take Lucy too long to realize that something just isn’t right on this lovely island. She suspects someone is trying to harm her; of course, no one believes her and more than one person suggests she is just getting too much sun and it may be coloring her perceptions. When something terrible does happen, Lucy realizes that the danger to her family lies in her father’s past. Thirty years earlier, long before he met his wife, George had an affair with a beautiful islander Veronique when he worked as an accountant in the very hotel they are staying. The affair ended when George was physically forced onto a plane back to England during the 1977 revolution. The plot is not the novel’s strong point. The first 90 pages are a travelogue with many descriptions of sumptuous meals eaten, the sight and delightful smell of the local flowers, the many colors of the surging surf. In addition, Lucy parasailed well and water-skied badly. An entire chapter is devoted to a trip on a glass-bottomed boat which has nothing to do with anything except to keep two characters away from a third for a day. The chapter could have been eliminated in one sentence. “After spending a day on a glass-bottomed boat, they returned to the hotel…” The novel introduces a Texas family for no purpose except to make fun of them. When the action picks up and the villain is revealed, all I could think was “Well, that came out of left field.” Even the final confrontation reminded me of Abbott and Costello’s “Who's on first.”I was just the wrong reader for this book. I like mysteries with an edge and the girl detective genre is not my style. Lucy goes from moony to supergirl in this book. On the way she makes one incredible mistake by not reporting an event to the police. No sensible person would have acted this way. This mystery might appeal to cozy fanciers, arm-chair travelers, and fans of Nancy Drew.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Where to begin? Leigh Russell isn't a new author to me, although this is the first book that I've read written by her. My mom has been a fan of Russell's "Geraldine Steel" series for a long time. So when this book came up for review, I wanted to give it a try. I'm not the biggest mystery buff, but I'm always willing to give the genre a try now and then.
Credit where credit is due, I think the biggest draw to this story was that the setting is absolutely lavish in the way that it's written. I've never been to the Seychelles, but Russell described the people, the food, and the atmosphere so vividly that I felt as if I'd known the place all my life. The fact that she included things as small as the look of a sunset over a landmark, or the occurrence of tropical rainstorms that were there and gone in a flash, made it a place I could easily get lost in. I honestly felt a bit jealous of Lucy. I'd love to experience that for myself.
The story itself, however, didn't hold that same sway over me. It took so long to get going in the beginning that, by the time things were in motion, I wasn't as invested as I had originally been. Lucy's story was simple enough. A woman who has been unlucky in love, and is eager to escape all her worries. I appreciated that Russell laid out Lucy's family history with the islands, before bringing her there as an adult. It was interesting to see how things tied back to the past. The pacing was really slow though. I was so eager for forward movement that I had to keep stopping myself from trying to skim read. I needed more action.
Add in the fact that the characters never really felt fully solid, and you'll see why I rated this three stars. It was an okay read, but it didn't catch up me as much as I wanted it to. I see a lot of potential in Leigh Russell's writing though. I think I'll pick up her Geraldine Steel detective series instead, since I have an affinity for the hard boiled detective types. Still, this is a fairly easy read and a good way to spend a few hours. Especially if you're a mystery lover. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Leigh Russell is quite a prolific author with 16 Books published since 2009. JOURNEY TO DEATH is the first of 3 in the Lucy Hall series.Lucy Hall comes to the Seychelles with her parents just after a romance breakup. She has sustained an emotional collapse and her parents are trying to help her recover. While they know that her father was evacuated (forcibly) from the island 30 years before, his wife and daughter know little about his personal life at that time. Their idyllic holiday is shattered when the wife, Angela, disappears. In the meantime Lucy begins to think that someone is targetting their family. The main narrator of the tale is Lucy and we see the action mainly through her eyes. However occasionally the reader is told what is happening to Angela, and the tension and suspense ratchet up.In the long run the story was handled well, and I feel tempted to follow Lucy into the second book in the series.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I was sent this book by Wunderkind PR in exchange for a review. This had no impact on my thoughts/feelings about the book in question. This is another psychological thriller but I believed it was a supernatural mystery right up until the last few chapters. The story begins with George Hall who has arrived in Seychelles (it's an archipelago off the coast of East Africa) as the new accountant of the Garden of Eden Hotel. He meets a beautiful woman named Veronique and falls in love. They are separated and the story jumps to present day when George accompanied by his wife and daughter arrive in Seychelles on vacation. It seems that his prior stay has not been forgotten by everyone...I can't give away more than this because SPOILERS but there's quite a bit of drama, mystery, and walks along the beach. I wasn't a huge fan of this one to be honest. I found the narrative to be plodding and not all that interesting. The fact that it felt more like a supernatural mystery as opposed to a psychological thriller might be the key. I just didn't feel invested in the characters and as a result wasn't drawn into the story. If you like books that follow a straight trajectory from A to B then you'll probably like this one but if you prefer to have a lot of WHOA moments...this book will be a disappointment.
