About this audiobook

Avery Sparks is a master at controlling chaos—and she gets plenty of opportunities as fire chief and head of emergency management in her hometown of Chance, Nebraska. The only thing she can’t seem to control are her feelings when she’s around Jake Mitchell, the man who was her first everything the night of their high school graduation. But Jake was so quick to leave Chance—and Avery—behind that she swore she’d move on.

While Avery’s job is to minimize drama, Jake embraces the chaos of an emergency. After enlisting in the Army National Guard, Jake became a nationally recognized leader in disaster recovery. Yet a life on the road has left him restless. So when a class-four tornado wreaks havoc on Chance, he’s eager to return home—and to the woman never far from his mind.

Now, Avery and Jake must team up to help their hometown weather a siege of violent storms. But it’s clear to them both that nature isn’t the only force they’ll have to reckon with. Will Avery and Jake’s whirlwind love affair be an all-new disaster—or can they recover from their stormy past to build a future together?

Erin Nicholas

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Erin Nicholas has been writing romances almost as long as she’s been reading them. To date, she’s written over thirty sexy, contemporary novels that have been described as “toe-curling,” “enchanting,” “steamy,” and “fun.” She adores reluctant heroes, imperfect heroines, and happily ever afters. Erin lives in the Midwest, where she enjoys spending time with her husband (who only wants to read the sex scenes in her books), her kids (who will never read the sex scenes in her books), and her family and friends (who claim to be “shocked” by the sex scenes in her books).

What a great start to a new series! Twisted Up is set in tornado country in Chance, Nebraska. Chance is a town that seems to always get hit & sustain damage from tornados. This book was emotionally charged & intense from the very beginning. Jake is a natural disaster recovery specialist sent to review town procedures & see if they would work in other locations. Avery is the fire captain responsible for a lot of those procedures & the girl Jake let down in high school. The chemistry is still there & intense between them but Avery is determined not to give in to it. There's history there that Jake just can't understand & something is wrong in the town but he can't put his finger on what it is. Jake & Avery have bickering & avoidance down to a science but can they deal with being in close contact? There are several things that are going on with the supporting characters that add to the intensity. The readers emotions are engaged from the start & the plot doesn't let you go until the very end. Erin Nicholas has brought her descriptive narrative style to create another intense series. This book has it all - scenes that make you ache, cry, laugh & think. I can't wait for the next book!

I saw this title on Netgalley and thought it was right up my alley (get it? Tornado alley? *sigh* anyway) … Midwest, tornadoes, second chance love, female lead an authority … it all sounded like something I would love. And I did really enjoy the concept. In general. But I did not at all enjoy Avery or Jake. For being a woman of authority, Avery is jumpy and flighty. Jake walks into a 10 miles radius and she’s utterly distracted. Not someone I want handling an emergency. And she has no self-respect whatsoever. She pretty much goes along doing whatever Jake wants because he’s so “perfect”, and she can’t think when he’s around. And Jake. Jake. Well, Jake crossed the line from confident, bordering on cocky, straight into egotistical jerk and never looked back. He drags Avery around, threatens to out their fling if she doesn’t act lovey-dovey to him, etc.I really wanted to love this. I did. I live in the middle of tornado alley in a small town. I wanted to connect with the characters and just love this book. And I just absolutely did NOT.*I received a copy of this book from the publisher/netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
