About this audiobook

Oscar Wilde created his final and most lasting play, comic masterpieces of all time, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, in 1895. Considered one of the greatest THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is a farce, playing with love, religion, and truth as it tells the tale of two men. Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who bend the truth in order to add excitement to their lives. Jack invents an imaginary brother, Ernest, whom he uses as an excuse to escape from his dull country home and gallavant in town. Meanwhile, Algernon follows Jack's scam, but his imaginary friend, Bumbury, provides a convenient method of adventuring in the country. However, their deceptions eventually cross paths, resulting in a series of crises that threaten to spoil their romantic pursuits. Hailed as the first modern comedy in England, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is Wilde's most famous work.

Author

Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish poet and playwright who rose to global fame in the 1880s as a larger-than-life public persona with plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband, and Lady Windermere's Fan. The author of countless brilliant epigrams that form part of our popular lexicon, he was sentenced to two years of hard labor in prison for having relations with men, which ruined his reputation and career. Upon his release he exiled himself in France, where he died penniless. Today Wilde is celebrated as a courageous crusader for free expression, gay love, and anyone oppressed by hypocritical conventions.

Oscar Wilde's madcap farce about mistaken identities, secret engagements, and lovers entanglements still delights readers more than a century after its 1895 publication and premiere performance. The rapid-fire wit and eccentric characters of The Importance of Being Earnest have made it a mainstay of the high school curriculum for decades.

Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax are both in love with the same mythical suitor. Jack Worthing has wooed Gwendolen as Ernest while Algernon has also posed as Ernest to win the heart of Jack's ward, Cecily. When all four arrive at Jack's country home on the same weekend the "rivals" to fight for Ernest's undivided attention and the "Ernests" to claim their beloveds pandemonium breaks loose. Only a senile nursemaid and an old, discarded hand-bag can save the day!

This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Edition includes a glossary and reader's notes to help the modern reader appreciate Wilde's wry wit and elaborate plot twists.

A very quick read, and one that although it is from over 100 years ago... it still holds true. there is a lot of sage wisdom contained in this book - especially with pertaining to debt and why you shouldnt get yourself into it. it almost makes the book shine, given the current debt situation we find ourselves in.

The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very tedious if it were either, and modern literature a complete impossibility! Algernon: The amount of women in London who flirt with their own husbands is perfectly scandalous. ... Algernon: Ah! that must be Aunt Augusta

This was an absolute delight! I read The Picture Of Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde before. If you haven't read, it's a very good book too. But, I had no idea he wrote such hilarious plays somehow.
I'm so happy I discovered it and I'll keep reading his plays for sure.
If you're looking for really well-written, funny plays with charming characters, please read this.

I'm still in awe of Oscar Wilde's broad spectrum of authorship. From children's stories (in which there are social satires here and there) to silly and humorous plays that are still filled with social satire in every dialogue. This made me even more curious and wanted to read another famous Wilde work, The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde's work seems like a delightful satirical reading. many things that can be taken from this book, amazing
