      A bit too earnest for me, and, once again, too squeaky clean. I guess I like a bit more angst and excitement.

      Digital audiobook narrated by C.S.E. CooneyBook three in the “Charmed Pie Shoppe” series gets more ridiculous. I guess I need some pie, because I’m no longer charmed by the eccentric characters and the lead character, Ella Mae, drives me crazy.I haven’t read book # 2 yet (for some reason there is an insane number of holds on that Overdrive audio through my library). So, I was quite surprised to learn that Ella Mae’s mother has been “merged” (turned into?) with a tree. The whole work of THIS episode is releasing her mother from that spell. Yes, there’s a murder. Yes, she gets some magical help from other “others.” The romance is heating up (literally and figuratively). I pushed to finish only because it fit a challenge. Oh, well. It was a fast read at least.C.S.E.Cooney does a fine job narrating the audiobook. She sets a good pace and her diction is clear enough that I could listen at double speed.

      This is the third book in A Charmed Pie Shop Mystery and I did not read the first two. I need to go back and read them because incidents that occurred in those books set the stage for this one.

      Ella Mae LeFaye is a witch that has the poser to bake feelings and emotions into her pies and baked goods. Each of the Magical people who live in Havenwood have a different ability which makes this premise interesting. There are also regular humans living in the same town. There is a magical grove that each wich needs to visit once a year to get their powers refreshed. Ella Mae's mother is the Lady of the Grove and has become part of the Magical Tree. That is all background to the story.

      The Grove that feeds the inhabitants of a town in Tennessee is burned to the ground, the refugees head to Havenwood in hopes of relocating. Ella Mae welcomes them with open arms, even though one of them might have been responsible for the fire. After a couple of murders Ella Mae, her aunts and friends are trying to investigate as well as Ella Mae trying to find a way to save her mother and bring her back to her human form. Of course the love angle is also a huge part of the story. Ella Mae is trying to develop a relationship with Hugh, a human and fireman. Lots of things happening in this book but if all ties together nicely. I am looking forward to reading the others in this series.

      Ella Mae LeFaye has had her share of problems lately – business is slow at her Charmed Pie Shoppe, her romance with hunky Hugh Dylan has some serious obstacles, and her beloved mother may be gone from her forever. Still, even with her troubles, Ella Mae is quick to help others who are in danger of losing their magic powers when their enchanted grove is set on fire. Almost before she realizes what is happening, Ella Mae is involved in a murder mystery. As if she doesn’t have enough on her plate, Ella Mae must find a killer and still free her beloved mother before time runs out.“Pecan Pies and Homicides” is the delightful third book in Ellery Adams’s Charmed Pie Shoppe cozy mystery series. Actually, this series is part cozy mystery/part fantasy and Adams is doing a wonderful job of building the mythology of this series. The characters are growing stronger (not just with their magical abilities but as people) and it is interesting to watch the relationships between the characters – not only Ella Mae’s relationship with High but her dealings with the entire Gaynor family, particularly Loralyn Gaynor (who is growing on me as a character). While the fantasy elements make up the bulk of the story (there are some huge surprises in store for the reader), the mystery is not neglected and it too has more than a few surprises (one theme in this series is that not everyone is what they seem to be and this is definitely true in this book – for better or worse.) While some storylines are wrapped up, there are a few teasers about future events that have me eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.“Pecan Pies and Homicides” is a charming cozy mystery.

      A fun read, but another book I'd have to classify as fantasy-cozy-mystery. This series has a definite almost-fairy-tale vibe to it, with ties to Arthurian legends (albeit Arthurian legends used with poetic license). Lots of magic, an enchanted forest, a wise old tree, and curses. I had some hesitation to read this one after reading the previous book, Pecan Pies and Alibis, because it was almost total fantasy, with murder on the side, and worse - it make me sniffly. I don't like books that make me cry. I don't like to cry, full stop. I'm not a graceful crier - my eyes swell big enough to look like I'm going anaphylactic and they burn, my colouring goes splotchy and foul, and afterwards I just want to sleep. So I avoid crying at all costs. But aside from that last chapter or so, I really enjoyed the read, so I finally picked up this book and dived right in. While still fantastical in it's premise, the murder mystery played front and centre this time. I like fantastical, but I prefer it to play second fiddle to the murder mystery, so this book was quite an improvement for me. Plus, no crying. This little Northwestern Georgia town is full of quirky, likeable characters. Ella Mae LeFaye, her name aside, is a strong, independent MC with strong attachments to family. Hugh is all the things the MC's love interest should be, but without the bad boy streak that gives so many love interests their edginess. I love the aunts and Reba. The murder mystery itself is both complicated and sad (but not too sad!), with a bit of a surprise denouement and confrontation. I say 'a bit' because I sort of figured it out early on, but not enough to be absolutely positive. A few things are left in flux at the end, with a foreshadowing of what's coming up in the next book. I'm very much looking forward to seeing what comes next.

      Ella Mae is saddened knowing that her mother is now the Lady of the Ash. Ella Mae goes to aparty at the Gaynor estate to welcome transplants from a Tennessee group whose sacred grove was burned and now they need to live in Havenwood.Worried that the same fate may befall their own sacred grove, Ella and her aunts work to be welcoming while protecting the Lady. Ella Mae is also determined to find a way to save her mother while protecting the grove.The story is wonderfully crafted and the new characters blended well while former minor characters are expanded. Loved it!

The ending is what sealed the deal :)Story Thoughts: Hands down, this was the best mystery in the series so far. Ella Mae had her hands full with trying to figure out not only a murder but who might also try to torch the secret grove. There were twists, turns, and one thing (with the case) that I didn't see coming. The series story arch moved forward at a really nice pace and gave us a lot of answers about some of the history of the town. It was nice to see Ella accepting who she is more and really getting more confident in herself. I was also thrilled to get more back story (and character development) about the feud between the two families. As you can tell, I really enjoyed this one!Character Thoughts: I want to visit the Charmed Pie Shoppe and have pie! I think Ellery made the characters shine and not just Ella Mae. I felt we got to know all of the secondary characters more in this story because they all played a big role in protecting the grove. We got little nuggets of information that really made each one of them more individualistic and stars in their own right. Especially as we learned more about the feud between the two families. I am going to admit that I don't dislike a certain someone near as much as I did before Pecan Pies. I loved the introduction of new characters and how they were brought to the community. In fact, is it bad that I hope we get a coffee shop (or maybe a spin off)? I was delighted to learn more about Hugh and can't wait to see how Ella and he progress from here. Ella though was the star and she grew so much in this book. I wanted to hug her, cheer for her, and yes at times kick her hiney (though her BFF did a great job of playing the reader in this book and getting her in line).Final Thoughts: Can't wait till the next one!
