About this audiobook

If you'd asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders-the Adept-was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it. That's what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you-a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled . . . except for the cupcake part. That's a universal truth.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting a lot from this book when I downloaded it for free. But I wound up reading it in one sitting, so I guess it was pretty good after all. If you like mildly-erotic supernatural fantasy in the mold of Kim Harrison or Kelley Armstrong, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try. Like Harrison's and Armstrong's books, this one falls into the "guilty pleasure" category for me, and Doidge isn't really up to their level, but this first book in the series still makes for fun late-night or beach reading, I'll definitely be checking out the next book in the series. One complaint: this may not be the book to read if you're on a diet![2014-08-01]

Not bad. Cute in fact. A bit tropey, gorgeous smart and supertalented cook who owns her own successful business at an improbably young age, discovers she's got superpowers.

Heroine is a bit passive, getting ordered around by everyone and anyone, until the very end when she finally grows a backbone. I think without that saving grace I may have liked it a lot less. The writing is competent, but the main character has a couple of annoying quirks, a "Yes I went there" kind of self-congratulory tone that is laid on a bit too thick, and it drops brand names constantly, which I suspect would also be annoying if not for the fact I didn't recognise any of them, so they slid right by me. Cos really, I don't much care about expensive rain boots, and I'm not sure why the character thinks I might.

Of course the men are so alpha it hurtss, and there looks like maybe a setup for a love triangle between a witch, a vampire and a werewolf. Because that's totally original.

I'll probably pick up the next couple of this series, because this was a nice light and fun read, and intriguing enough to want to know what happens next, but it's not an autobuy yet.

This is a well-written and suspenseful urban fantasy which includes vampires, werewolves and shapeshifters, witches, murder mystery, uncertain romance, and mysterious magic. And cupcakes.

Because this was free on Amazon, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this, pretty good entry in the typical urban fantasy genre, competently done, no surprises. Which is sometimes exactly what you want! The world building was fairly solid, and even better the characters were well drawn and engaging. I will likely pick up the other books in the series, when I want a relaxing read.

Meghan, Meghan, Meghan! I am expecting cupcake stocks to sail through the roof, and a run on cupcake ingredients at local markets just from reading this book. Whee!!!

OK, listen to this . . . Bliss in a Cup - peanut butter-iced fudge cake (did I say fudge cake? OMG wait a sec, I have to go get a towel . . . whew, there) Now, where was I? Oh, yes. Sex in a Cup - chocolate butter icing with a wallop of cinnamon and cocoa in the batter. Or, this particular favorite of mine, Buzz in a Cup - mocha fudge cake with mocha butter icing . . . oh, yes, I could go on, but I might swoon from pure overload. . .

Jade is a sweetheart. A nice young half witch, half human (maybe. . . ) with a nasty tempered foster sister, a wild earth witch grandmother, and a cupcake bakery. A very popular cupcake bakery with a reputation for 'magical' tasting cupcakes. She has a quiet life, happy with her baking, her trinket making and her quiet, apparently fulfilling life.

Then, of course, things change. And not in a nice way. Poor Jade. Life will never be the same. Apparently she isn't who she thought she was. But then, who is she?

Cupcakes, hot werewolves, cupcakes, mystery, oh, did I mention cupcakes? Yummy, luscious, delicious, chocolate, fudge. . . Oh. My. Goddess. The hardest thing about reading the book? First, I am dying for cupcakes now. And second? Hurry! Hurry! Write the next one, Meghan! Please!

    Highly recommended.

Jade is half witch, half human, however she doesn't use her witchly powers at all, she leaves all that stuff up to her grandma, who pretty much raised her and her foster sister Sienna. When a vampire shows up at her door wanting to know what she knows about the death of a couple of shifters, she gets pulled into an an investigation of sorts. Whoever is killing these shifters is using the trinkets Jade has made (and sells in her cupcake shop, using just a little bit of magic) out of vintage jewelry which hold some residual magic from the previous owners. The vampire and Alpha of the shifter pack thinks she can use magic to track the killer, despite the fact that she rarely uses magic.

I liked this book, it was engaging and sort of simplistic, although there is a mystery of Jade's actual parentage that is left open even at the end of the book, making way for the 2nd and 3rd books in the series. I was pretty sure I knew who was doing the killing, but I enjoyed it enough to keep reading (and to see if I was right).

Jade is a likable character, but she's a people pleaser and always does what others want, however she has a sarcastic side which is fun. But she seems to grow up a little bit by the end of this book so I'm assuming she's not going to be as much of a yes-person in the second book as she was in this one.

Definitely worth reading if you like a bit of paranormal with your mystery. There was no actual romance in this one, but I have a feeling that will change in the next book.

This was very good. I loved that while this is a series the major issues were resolved and you didn't have to read the next story to find out what happens - of course your going to have to as the story is as addictive as a chocolate - you just have to know more about Jade.

Jade is a witch who doesn't think she has much power and really just once to bake delicious, chocolate (preceded) cupcakes. A vampire appears and says he's investigating a murder and believes she may have committed the crime. As I write that it doesn't sound like a fun, sexy read but with Ms. Doidge's talent it's as hot and spicy as one of Jade's cupcake creations.

So much fun! I was expecting something light and frothy, but this turned out to be pretty dark in places. I definitely plan to continue the series.

Can I say that this book is trash but in the best way possible? What I mean is that it is a total escape from reality into a story that, while a bit predictable, is still fun and campy. I'm giving it about a 3.4 leaning towards 4 stars. It was just pure fun to read and while it doesn't make my top list of books I am still interested in continuing the series to see what other mysterious trouble our characters get into.

    Magic is sexy!

I loved this novel! From the sexy cupcakes names to the magical werewolf dance club "orgy" to the very horny main character. Fave character was Kett--aka the vampire. So mysterious in a I-want-to-rip-your-head-off way. This was just fun, quirky read. And apparently everything about magic is either really scary or sexy. Will definitely read the other novels!

Reader Rated 15 for mild language, mild sensuality, and mild violence.

Vampires, Werewolves, shifters, necromancers and witches oh my. It was a cute cozy type para-mystery read with a few grizzly bits, a good introduction into this world of baked goodies and supernaturals.
