About this audiobook

From Thomas Perry, the New York Times bestselling author of the Jane Whitefield series, comes a whip-smart and lethally paced stand-alone novel, Forty Thieves.

Sid and Ronnie Abel are a first-rate husband-and-wife detective team, both retirees of the LAPD. Ed and Nicole Hoyt are married assassins for hire living in the San Fernando Valley. Except for deadly aim with a handgun, the two couples have little in common-until they are both hired to do damage control on the same murder case. The previous spring, after days of torrential rain, a body was recovered from one of the city's overwhelmed storm sewers. The victim was identified as James Ballantine, a middle-aged African American who worked as a research scientist for a prestigious company and was well liked by his colleagues. But two bullets to the back of the head looked like nothing if not foul play.

Now, with the case turning cold, Ballantine's former employers bring in the Abels to succeed where the police have failed while the Hoyts' mysterious contractors want to make sure that the facts about Ballantine's death stay hidden. As the book races toward a high-octane climax, the Abels must fend for their own lives as they circle ever closer to the truth.

This book was entertaining, while not being particularly memorable. It might make a good airplane read. The crime at the center of the book is the murder of an African American chemist. When the police are unable to identify the killer, the victim's former employer hires a team of married ex-cops to investigate. That's half of the gimmick of this book. The other half is that the married detectives are opposed by a team of married assassins who have been hired by unknown parties to make sure that the murder is not solved. Resolution of the murder is pretty much an afterthought in this book. The two married teams spend a lot of time stalking and shooting at each other. Then a whole other group of armed evildoers enters the picture. There are so many weapons described that I felt like I was reading gun-porn. The ending of the book is morally questionable, to say the least. The book is ok, but there is no compelling reason to read it. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was pleased with the ending. Got the p-book from the library and bought the audiobook, which was well-narrated except that the narrator needs to learn how to pronounce "Los Feliz" the way Los Angeleños do.

I love me some Thomas Perry. I especially love Thomas Perry with entirely new characters. And in this case he's got couples. One white hat couple vs. one black hat couple and he does this new idea total justice. It's a nice nice read from beginning to end.

Thomas Perry can be relied upon to deliver solid mysteries. Although often billed as thrillers, to me they don't fit the description well as the outcome is usually reliably certain. This one was intriguing as it contains two sets, maybe even three, of protagonists. (I began to feel a certain sympathy for the thieves who, after all, were just trying to retire.) One set is the team of ex-cops now searching for the killer of a man who was more (or less, depending on your POV) than appearances. The other set is a pair of assassins who have been hired to kill the first team. It all comes together in a glorious denouement, although frankly the violence and over-specificity of brand-name weapons does nothing for me. Perry's originality and character development, on the other hand, do. Good read.

A stand-alone by the author of the Jane Whitefield series.
Two couples in the LA area, one couple are retired cops turned PIs; the other couple are killers-for-hire.

    Enjoyable.

This is a really good murder mystery. Lots of explosions, gun fights, killings and a few twist and turns. Very well written and entertaining. Oh the webs we weave. If you like murder mysteries then pick this one up.

I always enjoy Perry books. This one, however, wasn't a Jane Whitfield mystery but involved 2 ex-cops, mature, married, PI's hired, by a corporation, to investigate a murder that morphs into something a lot more than expected. Most of the time they are pitted against another married couple, but these are assassins.Perry develops the characters well, each couple, and also it is set in LA which figures in the story almost as a character too. The plot line evolves broadly but never too complex.Another great Perry read.

Perry is superb at plots. He always has surprises, never comes near the cliches that one can so often find. It seems to me that his stories would translate easily into good movies. Don't know why that hasn't happened. Perhaps he isn't interested.
