    The GIs called her Joey. Hundreds owed their lives to the tiny Filipina who stashed explosives in spare tires, tracked Japanese troop movements, and smuggled maps of fortifications across enemy lines. As the Battle of Manila raged, Josefina Guerrero walked through gunfire to bandage wounds and close the eyes of the dead. Her valor earned her the Medal of Freedom, but what made her a good spy was also destroying her: leprosy, which so horrified the Japanese they refused to search her. After the war, army chaplains found her in a nightmarish leper colony and fought for the U.S. government to do something it had never done: welcome a foreigner with leprosy. This brought her celebrity, which she used to publicly speak for other sufferers. However, the notoriety haunted her and she sought a way to disappear. Ben Montgomery now brings Guerrero's heroic accomplishments to light.

      Out of sight out of mind? Perhaps that phrase explains the lousy treatment and banishment of those suffering from leprosy back in the day... A dreaded disease it knew no social boundaries or age limit.....just the 'get away from me' attitude held by the public. I regrettably have to claim ignorance in regards to the Filipino devastation in WW2. Manila brought to mind the city of Warsaw in Poland actually! But THIS is the story of Josefina Guerrero aka 'Joey' who refused to accept her lot and those like her afflicted with the disease. She refused the word NO. She did more than most to protect and warn the American GI's than anyone ....ANYONE. Because of her leprosy she was left alone and therefore allowed to go to areas no one else WANTED to travel! She delivered secret messages,warned of land mines, and kept many a man alive due to her OWN selflessness! She alone also did her best to sanitize the leper camp, to teach the others how to help themselves...and then? She fought to get to America where there was a chance for treatment and a possible cure. A quiet, diminutive woman who wanted no acclaim. But gave of herself like no other.
