About this audiobook

One person talks; the other listens. It's so basic that we take it for granted. Unfortunately, most of us think of ourselves as better listeners than we actually are. Why do we so often fail to connect when speaking with family members, romantic partners, colleagues, or friends? How do emotional reactions get in the way of real communication? This thoughtful, witty, and empathic book has already helped over 100,000 people break through conflicts and transform their personal and professional relationships. Experienced therapist Michael P. Nichols, PhD, provides vivid examples, easy-to-learn techniques, and practical exercises for becoming a better listener and making yourself heard and understood, even in difficult situations.

Went through the first and second chapter, was expecting a more of a guide. Instead it was just the therapist stories and there was never any sort of guide on how to listen. Or when to interrupt or stay quiet if someone’s attacking your character.

Might have been covered later on but the first two chapters did not grip me unfortunately

Amazing book to listen to on the Art of Listening. I felt that this book helped me to listen more and I think that it would be something great to listen to at least once a month.

Listen to the audio at 2x or 3x while you are following pdf. You will thank me for this. The book is very powerful, especially when you will realize that most of the problem is with you, not the others. Thank you, Michael P. Nichols, Ph.D., for writing this book.

Best book on listening I ever read. The reason is it explores the dynamics of listening not just technique number one technique number two. Again I say is the best book and listening I have a read.

I appreciate that there's some humor and self-reflection in this book. It isn't simply didactic, from a position of expertise and expcting you can learn how to be a perfect listener. He admits his own mistakes and self-involvement, because, as he says, listening is a skill and an art. It requires practice and attention every time, it may eventually get easier, but it will still require attenion and focus. Understanding empathy makes it easier.

This book is full of examples of how to listen (and how not to). I always enjoy reading it although sometimes it feels like I am reading the same things over and over. Nichols goes into a lot of the psychological aspects of communication, which can be a little heavy at times.
