About this audiobook

Eveline Armstrong is fiercely loved and protected by her powerful clan, but outsiders consider her "touched." Beautiful, fey, with a level, intent gaze, she doesn't speak. No one, not even her family, knows that she cannot hear. Content with her life of seclusion, Eveline has taught herself to read lips and allows the outside world to view her as daft. But when an arranged marriage into a rival clan makes Graeme Montgomery her husband, Eveline accepts her duty-unprepared for the delights to come. Graeme is a rugged warrior with a voice so deep and powerful that his new bride can hear it, and hands and kisses so tender and skilled that he stirs her deepest passions.Graeme is intrigued by the mysterious Eveline, whose silent lips are ripe with temptation and whose bright, intelligent eyes can see into his soul. As intimacy deepens, he learns her secret. But when clan rivalries and dark deeds threaten the wife he has only begun to cherish, the Scottish warrior will move heaven and earth to save the woman who has awakened his heart to the beautiful song of a rare and magical love.

I can’t believe I’m just now reading Never Seduce a Scot in 2024, but thanks to the Romanceopoly Reading Challenge, I finally picked it up to read. This book may very well be my favorite Maya Banks book because it ticked all the boxes of what I enjoy in romance books. It has a strong heroine and an alpha Scottish hero who is supposed to despise each other due to their families having a feud with one another, but they are forced into marriage and eventually become lovers.

The heroine, Eveline Armstrong, is someone I adored immediately due to her courage and strength in everything she went through. Eveline didn’t let her disability get the best of her. She learned and endured, and she stood her ground when it came to the clan that hated her. The whole time, I was cheering her on because she was one heroine who wouldn’t put up with the clan’s hatred for her. I felt for her because she was trying, and the clan women and even men were treating her like the enemy when she was innocent in her family’s feud against the Montgomerys.

You would think being forced to marry your enemy due to the King’s wishes, Graeme Montgomery would despise his wife, but no, he did the complete opposite. Graeme would not allow anyone to hurt Eveline, not even his own clan. He won me over immediately when he stood up for her and cherished her, especially when he learned the truth about her condition. Graeme was what I consider the perfect alpha hero in a romance book, and some real men should take notes from him.

Let’s not forget the chemistry between Graeme and Eveline. It was passionate and steamy. Graeme was such a gentleman with Eveline, especially during her first time. The love between these two was epic, and I’ll never forget their story. It was a dramatic, emotional, aspiring story that was hard to put down, and I give it five stars. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series now.

Audiobook Review: I borrowed the ebook from my local Library via Libby but also listened to the audiobook via Everand. I know some readers enjoy dual POV, and I definitely prefer it with romance books, but Kirsten Potter is one narrator who you will enjoy listening to her bring both characters to life, especially since this book is told in the third person. Her Scottish accent for the characters, especially Graeme, was perfect, and she made the story very enjoyable, even though I was a crying mess during certain scenes. I definitely recommend the audiobook if you prefer listening to your books.

When the King demands that two waring clans be united through marriage, both families are outraged and shocked. When Graeme, hears the decree, he has no idea how he will go through with it, knowing that he vowed to himself years ago that he would get revenge for his father's death, especially knowing the rumors he has heard about his future wife. Eveline, when she learns that she must marry, she knows that she will have no choice, even though she has no idea how she could leave her clan, her family, where she has been protected and loved by her family. However from the first moment she sees him, she knows her life will change.....Graeme when first meeting Eveline, notices that she is different, not addled in any way, but there is something special about her, and he knows he can do no other than see to her welfare and happiness....Eveline hides a terrible secret that she even kept from her family, and now it seems that she will have to keep it from the one man who awakens a desire in her with his caresses, and who opens up her heart to love...I have to say WOW!!! I just loved Never Seduce A Scot, the best of Maya Banks work so far!!! I just loved everything about this book. I was thrilled when I was able to get a copy and immerse myself in its pages. As far as historical romances go....this tops the list!!! The romance in this story was so precious and tender at times, I wanted to cry....the story line was full of surprises and flowed beautifully from beginning to end. The characters were very endearing and likeable. Graeme, was the perfect alpha male, but at the same time had a tender side. Even though he hates Eveline's clan, he always treats her with tenderness and care, it just breaks your heart, Eveline is just a sweetheart, and has been dealt a hard hand early in her life, however she is full of life and gives everyone the benefit of a doubt even though she is in 'Enemy Territory'. Eveline really appealed to me because she wasn't one of those heroines that fight every step of the way, she accepted her duty with dignity, and has such a sweet nature that you can't help but like her and you just want to cheer her on when she gets spine and stands up for herself too. Overall a powerfully written and emotional wringer, an amazing love story of sacrifice and forgiveness, and the true power of love.....A TREASURE TO KEEP!!!!

I was very fascinated by this book. I'm at a loss for words to describe this book, but let me just say this "A well-known warrior who will get on his knees and scream I love you to his wife in front of everybody". That's something I need not want.

I had read Banks' McCabe series and hadn't particularly cared for it. But I'm so pleased I gave her another shot, this one was a lot of fun. I've read plenty of forced marriage, and rival clans tropes, and often there is just so much drama between the couple not getting on and it takes forever for them to soften toward each other. This one really let the circumstances around them have the drama so they didn't have to get in their own way over and over. I enjoyed them as individuals and their relationship together.

This was fine, the writing is not great, and Eveline seems not too bright though she taught herself to lip read completely fluently with zero support or guidance, which is kind of impossible, so I guess I should not underestimate her. I am doing things around the house and going over some rote work tasks and I just had this playing in the background. Usually I can't do that and I end up getting sucked in to my book and having to turn it off to get my work done, but no such problem here - it took zero effort and while it included some entertaining moments, it never engaged me.

This is maybe the first old time (Medieval?) book set in the Scottish Highlands I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it. There was a lot of lovely character development which was nice, although all the action at the end might have been a bit rushed. Still it was a great story that I raced through this afternoon and evening.

Ugh, just some evidence of my tiny, hard, shriveled heart.

I had some issues with this book, and none of them were necessarily the issues you'd expect from this type of set up.

    Everything was just so perfect
After decades long feud (or more) you come to realize these fighting clans are just made up of the best people. except for the mean girls in the Montgomery clan. Without the mean girls, there'd be no conflict. NONE. Absolutely none. Because the hero is a perfect patient man who says all the right things, repeatedly and is astounded by just how sweet and beautiful the heroine is. And she's astounded that she can hear his vocalizations and just how sweet, patient, and loyal he is. It's just so happy. And they are just so perfect. And just so beautiful.

It was SO repetitive between discussions on their beauty, the conflict between the clans, the fact that Eveline tried so hard and Graeme did too, and then that we'd repeat that within the same page in just a different order I feel like the author missed putting any depth or content and just went straight for word count (I could handle this better in audio cause I could kind of space here and there)

It was beyond sentimental. Between the repetition and the sentimentality, I wish I could show you a video of how many times I scoffed. Graeme declares his love to Eveline's dad. Then he repeats it to her mom. Almost the exact same phrasing. And it was, like, so sticky.

Complicated family drama just brushed aside in favor of this beautiful beautiful love.

I was so disappointed for what could have been. Maybe just a tiny bit more reluctance between characters and their families. Maybe not the outrageous mean girls from the Montgomery clan as a method for conflict & the ex-fiance as the final culmination. Plot devices, all. At first, I couldn't believe this was the same author that I weirdly stumbled across that wrote about the woman savior for the Colter Brothers (and yak, don't get me started with that one). Turns out, this is about another woman savior. Everyone just loves her so damn much that nothing else, Nothing Else, matters.

It was an easy read. The beginning was really promising. Then it went rapidly to pot.

Forced by the King into an arranged marriage, Eveline Armstrong and Graeme Montogomery must overcome centuries of animosity between their clans as well as the dangerous threat posed by an evil mind bent on revenge.

The romance is sweet and Eveline and Graeme have wonderful chemistry. Nevertheless, the medieval setting, language and characterization demand a great deal of suspension of disbelief.

Graeme is strong and resilient, and an exceptional leader. However, it is difficult to believe that he would so readily come to love and admire a bride from a rival clan, especially one who is so obviously impaired both physically and emotionally.

Eveline is an intelligent and courageous heroine. The manner in which she copes with her hearing impairment and the disdain of the Montgomery clan leads to some truly emotional and endearing moments. Nevertheless, she is a little to passive and saccharine for my tastes.

The secondary plot revolving around the threat to Eveline has potential but comes across as an afterthought rather than an integral part of the story. While the villain is smarmy and disgusting, he is also rather pathetic and is dispatched too quickly.

All in all, a light and entertaining read for those who aren’t too preoccupied with realism in their historical romance.

My first exposure to this book was through Lisa’s awesome review. For the most part, it lived up to the hype and many five star ratings like Lisa’s. Yet, there were times where the book fell into romance novel pitfalls that stopped me from giving it the same.First off, it definitely deserved all the stars for an emotional journey that will leave you breathless. At times, the book reminded me of my absolute favorite romance novel ever that I read ages ago (and just now realized I hadn’t starred! XD), Lynn Kurland’s This Is All I Ask. The depths of romantic love and emotional pain between Graeme and Eveline reminded me much of that other work; Maya Banks brought their relationship to life with beautiful detail and a well of sentiment that made me want to just dive in again. This is a novel that will leave you crying and smiling through your tears in equal measure. There were times where the Eveline came across as too perfect: beautiful, patient, giving, self-sacrificing, brave…. You name the attribute; she had it. At times, it stretched the bounds of believability. The way the Montgomery clam women also ganged up on her were also a bit too high school clique-ish. Nora’s chores stuff and Kierstan’s constant name-calling and confrontations made me roll my eyes more than once. Yet, at the end of the day, this is a romance novel. In the emotions department, it excels as such. It’s a beautiful ride of love and drama that any lover of the genre will enjoy. Just be prepared for some of the pitfalls that any reader of romance novels probably know about already anyway.

REVIEW IN ENGLISH AND ITALIAN (thanks to netgalley and ballantine for the preview)

I can't tell you how much I loved this novel.
Ok, I'm quite biased. When I find in the plot a Scottish setting (and obviously with Highlanders ;)), a main character beautiful but fragile due to a physical problem (in this case the deafness), a war between clans and a Laird proud but tender ... ok , you already know! I melt in a puddle.
And if the expectations are not only met ...but more! What can I say?
Only this last thing, it made me cry. At some point in the story ... you know, when you empathize so much that emotions flow uncontrolled and you find yourself crying like a fool. Here you are.
Surely my first approach to this author was very lucky (oh yeah! Centered in one shot! An uncommon luck seeing the last novels I read ;)) ... now I can't wait for the sequels. The second novel, Highlander Most Wanted will be released in February 2013 ... not so much to wait ... I can do it! ;)

    Highlands
Peace has finally come to the highlands, King Alexander II can be pleased ... if not for one thing.
Two of his most powerful allies are at war with each other, but he can't allow the situation to continue. He needs a united, and ready to respond to his call, Scotland. Not a Scotland engaged in internal conflicts that cause the death of valuable men.
    The solution? A wedding!
So, by royal decree, Eveline Armstrong -the "touched" daughter of the Laird - and Graeme Montgomery -Laird of his clan- find themselves betrothed with the order to cease immediately the hostilities.
Graeme 's pride is injured but he can't put in danger the whole clan for an egoistic feeling. So he meets the murderers of his father, to proceed with the marriage... though the anger burns every second much brighter: not only because he will become related to the people who hates from the cradle, but considering the rumors about his future wife, he cannot even hope in a normal marital life. In an heir.
On the other hand Eveline, who for some time had resigned herself to a meaningless life, is probably the only one who hasn't so many bad thoughts for the upcoming event. Immediately after the incident that brought her from a normal life to one without sound, Evie (for a reason I can't tell you or I will spoil your reading ;)) thought it was better to pretend to be mindless. And she learned to read lips in order to didn't feel totally unrelated to the world around her.
Now, this wedding presents the opportunity to begin a new life, where she will build her own family.
It's true, the difficulties that lie ahead are so many! Away from a family that loves her, in an hostile clan, without friends...
But the first meeting with her future husband present many fascinations and hopefully an interesting future for they both.

I dare not tell you more, infact I have already said too much ... read the novel, if you like as much as me a romance novel of this kind I'm also sure you will love Never Seduce a Scot!

Scottish 1700s? Highlands romance. Eveline was thrown from her horse, hit her head and became deaf. But she hid her deafness from her family, learning to read lips very well. Her family considers her "daft" because she doesn't always participate in things. Graeme is the laird of the rival clan, and the King has declared that he must marry Eveline and declare a truce between the clans. But after marriage, he finds out that Eveline is deaf, not daft, and they wind up falling in love.

This book was lovely on its own and doesn't necessarily need a series. The second book was terrible, but I suspect the third one will be better. The female was very sweet who hid her deafness after an accident from her family and learned to read lips. I was delighted to discover that the author's husband is Deaf and the book is dedicated to him. The male protagonist was very sweet and I'm glad I read it.

First in the Montgomerys and Armstrongs series. Graeme Montgomery and Tavis Armstrong are the chiefs of rival clans that have been feuding for generations. The King of Scotland decree's that these two powerful clans enter into a truce with Tavis’ daughter, Eveline, marrying Graeme. There is no way around the King's wishes without becoming outlaws so, despite their protests, the marriage must go ahead.Three year's previously, Eveline had a serious accident which left her unable to hear, her family to believing that she is daft, and consequently her engagement to Ian McHugh, son of another clan chief, called off. Although deaf, Eveline is certainly not daft, but has kept up the deception in order to avoid marriage to the cruel Ian McHugh who had threatened her with unspeakable degradation. Graeme resigns himself to marriage to a hated enemy. When he arrives to be married, Eveline finds she can hear the deep vibrations of his baritone and is drawn to him.A light read, but fun. Would read this author again.

Having now read a few Highlander romances, I've realized that I'm just not a fan. Nevertheless, I didn't hate this book. It's actually a well done love story about a supposedly "daft" girl forced by the king to marry the laird of the clan that is her family's blood enemy. In a period of two days, the laird figures out that she isn't daft but just deaf (as the result of an accident), something her family hasn't caught on to in three years. Of course, the laird falls in love with her and she with him. He's valiant and hunky, and she's beautiful and brave. There's a villain that can be seen riding his charger from three mountaintops away, but justice prevails in the end. If you're a Highlander fan, you'll probably enjoy this book.

I just can't get into Highlander world, though. All the blood feuds and "'tis" and "'twas" and "lass" and "aye" and "nay" -- it just sound silly to me. Now, is it any sillier than ton balls and duels and the scandal of riding in Hyde Park without a chaperone? Not at all. It's just that I find 19th century silliness more interesting than 15th century.

So, no more Highlanders for me. I wish it were otherwise, but there you have it.

Really terrible. Amazon AND Audible sent me emails recommending this thing, so I read it, and boy, did I ever not like it. I don't think I've ever gotten a good recommendation from either source. I should try to remember that.

Every plot twist is telegraphed, and the characters...well, frankly, this read like a romance novel written by an alien who had been shown the synopsis of Outlander or something. The people do not behave like humans. Don't read this thing. Sylvia Day writes similar stuff that is actually enjoyable and won't insult your intelligence.

Oh, and all the women (except the one who wants to be a man) are assholes. Shame on you, Banks; female writers should know better. Way to fail the Bechdel Test.

Trigger Warning: I guess be weary of the ending. It's not bad, but there is some (non-sexual but creepy) abuse at the hands of the bad guy.

I really enjoyed this book. The heroine is genuine and believable while the hero is not just another preening adonis. They both have flaws but still are heroic in their own way. While it is just a tad too predictable to give it 5 stars(I knew who the villian was early in the book) it is still original enough to make it more then just another Highlander love story. (The heroine was made deaf by a horseriding accident a few years ago) I recommend this book to anyone looking for enjoyable, uncomplicated way to spend a few hours.

Never Seduce a Scot was kindly provided to me by Edelweiss for Random House Publishing Group.

Why have I waited so long to read Maya Banks? This was the perfect historical romance: steamy yet romantic. 'Never Seduce a Scot' is the start of a new series entitled 'The Montgomerys and Armstrongs' which I will most definitely be continuing!

The summary had me intrigued but I felt that the reference to Eveline being 'fey' had me expecting a paranormal historical twist, but... there wasn't any paranormal anything to be found within these pages.

Eveline though, was a fantastic character and one that managed to light up the pages despite her lack of dialogue (at first). I really love it when authors create imperfect characters since it adds something 'different' to the otherwise typical historical romance storyline. Eveline was strong despite her inability to hear and despite the hostile environment she'd been forced into.

'She twisted his insides into knots he had no hope of loosening.'

The romance was a bit insta-love but still managed to be heartwarming regardless. You can't help but love Graeme because of his continued support of Eveline despite the fact that he's being forced to marry her even with their family history. I loved their obvious chemistry and enjoyed being able to see how much he cared for her by the end pages.

This definitely won't be my last book by this author! Fantastic!

It takes the eyes of a beautiful deaf girl to see past the years of hatred to the actual people involved underneath.

Eveline Armstrong is forced by the king to marry the laird of their bitter enemy's clan, Graeme Montgomery in an attempt to bring about peace between the clans.
A riding accident took her hearing but not her beauty or her common sense. Graeme very quickly learns that his new wife is a gentle kindhearted woman who is not responsible in any way for sins of the past. His brothers soon see the wisdom and righteousness of his view.
It takes several near death experiences and a previously unknown enemy to bring both clans into the same way of thinking.

With touches of humour, passion, intellegence and determination, Banks unwinds another great novel from the rocky land of Scotland in historic times. Recommended to Highland romance readers and Banks followers.

I loved this book! It's definitely my favorite Maya Banks highlander book so far. Eveline was a delightful heroine and she had a quiet strength about her. It was less in your face than some highlander books and I appreciated that. She was a gentle soul and her feelings got hurt at times, but when it counted she found the strength to do what she had to do.

Graeme was wonderful as well. He had to marry the daughter of his worst enemy, which might make some men bitter, but he accepted his wife, even when he thought she was daft.

The conflicts involving his clan not accepting Eveline were very believable. At times I wanted to Graeme to step in and force them to treat her better, but of course that wouldn't have made them accept her really.

There is great potential here for future books as both Eveline and Graeme have two brothers each. Not to mention Graeme's younger sister, Rorie. The blurb for the next book already has me intrigued. I look forward to visiting with these characters again.

Leading ladies with fire and sass are always my favorite!Story Thoughts: Here is what you need to know about me--I am a sucker for romances that involve unusual leading characters. In this case, Eveline is deaf. I love how this plays into the story and how she uses it to her advantage. The story never tries to discount her disability and instead weaves it into every aspect of her daily life. The romance plays out in a similar fashion--slowly and with intent. Even though this is an arranged marriage story, it is one that ends up getting you in the heart!Character Thoughts: I love Eveline. For a woman of her time she was resourceful and smart. She does honor her place in her men's (father and husband) life but she works hard to make her own spot within those constraints. Graeme is a man of his word and very perceptive (except when he isn't ---freaking males). I loved how they fell in love, understood each other, and had a really awesome declaration of love scene. I laughed out loud and cried happy tears!Audio Thoughts: Narrated by Kirsten Potter /Running Time 10 hrs and 10 mins I am going to start with I normally LOVE Kirsten Potter. Y'all have seen me gush about the Dianne Duvall series and how I have to listen to it on audio. Same goes with the Lisa Gardner series so I love Kirsten on a whole. I don't know what it was about this book that didn't wow me in audio form. Kirsten did her normal awesome job with pacing and emotions. I think I just didn't connect to the character voices :( It happens occasionally though luckily not very often with my favorite narrators.Final Thoughts: Really love this series! I think Maya writes excellent historicals and if you haven't given them a whirl, you should!

I absolutely loved this book. I started out and was abel to start, then on my second time picking up the book I intended to read for an hour, and I could't put it down!! The characters were well rounded and I could visualize the story perfectly in my head. The Graeme was strong, yet he showed a sofetr side.I really enjoyed him. While Eveline seemed to start out weak, she quickly found her voice and proved to be equally as strong. I also enjoyd how Maya Banks gave life to the other characters and the did not blend into the background.

I'd never read any Maya Banks before, and this book made me look for more of hers. It seems she's hit her stride - I dipped into some of her earlier books and wasn't that impressed, but the later Scots ones are fairly enjoyable.Never Seduce a Scot is fun, if somewhat trite. The hero and heroine are very likeable with few real flaws. Once Graeme learn's Eveline's "secret" the book turns into more of an adventure story. Worth a read, but not must-read.

Graeme and Eveline are forced to wed as the king seeks peace between their two clans. Rumors spread of Eveline being "touched" (aka - not right in the head) so Graeme expects his marriage to be more of a caretaking role than a mate/partner. He soon discovers he, and everyone else, were very wrong. Eveline accepts, and almost looks forward to, her marriage because she sees it as a way to start fresh and get away from the secrets she has felt forced to keep from her own family. She soons finds she has more than that to look forward too from her new husband. =)Loved it!!! I love a romance novel where the man is big, strong, protective (yet not overbearing), smokin' hot type and I certainly got it in this novel! Can't wait for the next in this series!!
