About this audiobook

Former homicide detective Nicole Foster has hit rock bottom. Driven off the force by her treacherous partner and lover, she’s flat broke and struggling with a gambling addiction. All Nicole has left is the dream of a warm bed at a homeless shelter and the haunting memories of three-year-old Kelsey Chase—whose murder case ended her career.

As Nicole obsesses over the old facts, she realizes everything about that case felt off: a disinterested mom, a suicidal pedophile, and too many questions left unanswered. When the little girl’s grieving father begs Nicole for help, she’s drawn back into the investigation…and given one shot at redemption.

But the deeper Nicole digs, the more evil she uncovers, including betrayals that hit painfully close to home. Will a shocking discovery be the key to finally getting justice for Kelsey and resurrecting her own life?

A brilliant noir tale of disastrous family relations, a horrible crime, detectives with heavy personal problems, and dark ladies, real or apparent. I read the Weight of Silence, which is also very good, before this, not knowing that it should have been the reverse.

Didn't quite finish. Too coincidental and implausible. And Nicole's constant analyzations of her life, her addiction and other mistakes, her sister, their childhood...... omg, I couldn't take it anymore. The ongoing victim mantra was annoying. 2 stars for the fact that it kept me guessing.

I couldn’t follow this book if it had a million dollars attached to it. It just served as background noise to my life. Hanging around in the background while I slept or cleaned! Was never sure of what was going on! I really tried. Oddly enough, I felt like the narrator talked too much. Is that even possible for an audiobook?

The book is great. The ending was a bit rushed which kept me from awarding it 5 stars. Definitely worth reading.

Many interesting twists and turns. However I found it dragged, droned on as the detective gave her thoughts on situations.

Too much effort went into the build up of this story only to have such an abrupt ending that leaves the reader with so many questions. Not satisfied with how the story ends.

It took a long time to get going. Then a lot seemed to happen towards the very end. Not a fan of this book.

I’m the type that can figure something out fairly early in any book. This book had me going back-and-forth and the ending was a shock. Two thumbs up.

A really good story with lots of twists and turns in it. I was engaged the time time. It feels like there should have been an epilogue.

Narration was very good. I was enjoying this book until the end. So many twists that it just became ridiculous!
For that reason I would not recommend this book ?

This book started well. There's a missing child, suspicious characters, and a flawed yet dedicated cop. I thought the focus on Nicole's gambling addiction was a bit much, but the story was suspenseful and gripping. Then it rapidly became confusing. There were a lot of loose ends and no resolution at the end. I know The Sound of Rain is the first of a series, and since I like this author, I will read the next one. I hope the next book will clear up some of my questions.

The heroin of this book is far from perfect. Former homicide detective Nicole Foster is a gambling addict. She has lost her house and is now homeless. She and her partner respond to a call concerning a kidnapped little girl. She didn’t know that this would be the case that ended her career. Nicole then becomes obsessed with solving the case. The book is a great mystery – with many twists and turns. I won the book from GoodReads in return for an unbiased review

I received a free advance e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Wow! What a great story. I couldn’t put it down. Full of unexpected twists and turns. A former homicide detective with a gambling addiction hits rock bottom and is seeking redemption as she follows and obsesses over the case of a murdered little girl. The author is an amazing storyteller. This book is full of surprises right up until the end with a shocking discovery at the very end. This is a well-written thriller/murder mystery with good character development and an amazing plot. I look forward to reading more books by Gregg Olsen in the future. This is a keeper and well worth the read.
