About this audiobook

The hilly terrain next to the old Sprocket house that Meg Langslow and her fiancé, Michael, are refurbishing is the perfect location for an extreme croquet field?even the legs of cows and sheep are convenient extra wickets. Croquet has become all the rage in Caerphilly…until it appears someone in town has taken the rage a bit too literally. While stumbling down a steep bank after her ball, Meg encounters the body of a fresh female corpse with a mallet-sized dent in her head. If that isn't reason enough to call a time-out, it turns out that Michael knew the woman from years before. Ever curious, Meg decides that playing arm-chair sleuth is far more important than working on her game.

amateur-sleuth, american-civil-war, women-sleuths, cozy-mystery, verbal-humor, situational-humor, law-enforcement Morris dancers! Extreme croquet! An unknown battle from The Late Unpleasantness! And a murder on the property, of course. The extended family and also the local historical society add almost as much madness as the Morris dancers sharing the barn with Meg and her Michael. Laugh yourself silly once again as Meg does more sleuthing! Bernadette Dunne continues to be fantastic as narrator.

My first Donna Andrews book. Very odd--a female blacksmith living in the Shenandoah valley--wih a murder taking place during an Xtreme Croquet match over a weekend. Weird humor--which I liked and interesting reading. I will definitely read Ms. Andrews again--very unconventional.

Donna Andrews' Meg Langslow series is one of my all time favourites and a series I re-read with regularity. No nest for the wicket is one of the best, as I really enjoy the ones where Meg's wacky family plays their part. I've read no author who can so perfectly write such three-dimensional characters - even the most out there of the relatives seems believable. I think the plot was solid, with lots of red herrings and the murderer ultimately not easy to guess.

I hope Ms. Andrews finds many many more plots within her as I'll be devastated when this series ends. (This review reflects the third time I've read this book.)

Fun--"no thinking" required. What a great book to unwind with. The characters could easily be found in any family. Happy Reading!

I really like this series, but for me this particular book was a disappointment. Her series are normally so fun and this just fell so short of her others. Meg and a couple of the ladies from the Caerphilly Historical Society hold an extreme croquet tournament. Meg stumbles upon a dead body in the middle of one of the croquet fields. There are, of course, numerous suspects as the murder victim was known and despised by all. Normally filled with chuckles, this one was a little humorless and slow moving at times, but still a good read if you like the series. If you haven't read the others, don't start with this one.

No Nest for the Wicket - Donna Andrews (8/10)Light mystery; book 7 in the Meg Langslow series.I love Meg Langslow and her crazy family. In this book she and her fiance, Michael, are hosting an "Extreme Croquet" tournament that turns into a murder investigation when Meg finds the body of a young woman who appears to have been killed from a blow to the head with a croquet mallet. The usual insanity occurs and a fun time is had by all - except perhaps the victim and the murderer of course.

Meg and Michael are renovating their new house outside Caerphilly. During an Extreme Croquet match in the cow pasture, Meg discovers the body of a young woman, an abrasive historian whom Michael had dated for a while. Ties to town bigwigs and a possible outlet mall on the next farm over complicate the investigation. As usual, Meg's eccentric family and odd neighbors provide comic relief, but this doesn't have the sheer wacky charm of some in the series.

Meg and Michael are trying to renovate their new home, but have gotten caught up in something called "extreme croquet". While playing, Meg runs across a dead body, in her neighbors pasture area. There are plenty of suspects, including all the workers on the building, everyone playing croquet, and just about everyone else who was around the property during the game.I really enjoyed this book, Meg and Michael are the calm in the middle of the crazy storm. Meg's family are heavily involved in the croquet match, or in the renovation, or just in Meg's life. There are college students, historians, local dignitaries and all of it is mixed into a laugh-out-loud mixture of intrigue and mishaps.

Suffering from a chronic inability to say "no" to her friends and family, blacksmith Meg Langslow finds herself sliding down a bank during the eXtreme croquette tournament she was talked into hosting ... and lands on the body of a strange woman. As life goes on for nearly everyone Meg finds herself investigating the mysterious death and daydreaming about which suspect would make her life easiest. No Nest for the Wicket is an enjoyable cozy mystery, and echoes the tone and storyline of the previous books nicely.

This book introduces me to Meg and her family. I was attracted by the reference to croquet on the cover. After reading this, I was hooked and had to search out more books.

Meg and her fiancé Michael are attempting to get settled into their new home in Caerphilly, or actually their barn more like as the house itself is still going through all sorts of repairs and renovations. Since they're also hosting Caerphilly's first official extreme croquet tournament, their home is swarming not only with the Shiffley family work men, but with all Meg's family as well, including countless cousins and second cousins. Therefore, there's no shortage of suspects when Meg finds a dead body at the bottom of a small ravine, following the path of her stray croquet ball. The woman's head has been bashed in, and it would appear that a croquet mallet was the likely weapon. Of course, in addition to the sheriff and local police force, Meg must do her own digging, attempting to discover the identity of the woman and the reason someone would want her dead.I totally enjoyed this 7th book in the Meg Langslow mystery series, and like it's predecessors, the wacky, zany antics of Meg and family make getting there half the fun. Whether or not you remember whodunit in a year's time is irrelevant as the journey will remain with you for awhile to come. :)

My heart says this is a great cozy! My brain will give in and forgive it for having so many suspects! This is my first venture into this cozy series written by Meg Laslow. I now want to go back and read the first of this series, “Owls Well That Ends Well”.The story starts off with an "eXtreme croquet" which means croquet played in rough terrain, this time involving cow and sheep pastures. Which means that you could end up with a cow standing guard over your wicket? Meg, the main character finds a tall, beautiful blonde bludgeoned a by croquet mallet. Since there were four teams of players that means there was a plethora of suspects. But I really enjoyed. I felt at home with Meg, her fiancé Michael, both her quirky parents and in particularly Spike, a very unusual dog. All this happens in the little town of Caerphilly.Since Meg’s house was undergoing major renovations Meg and Michael were sleeping in the barn during the time of the croquet match. After the discovery of the victim, all the suspects and even the Shiffleys had to stay put. The Shiffleys were a large family that you went to get anything done. The Shiffleys won my heart with their huge breakfasts that they cooked up for everyone. They set the spread on horses and sheets of plywood. I could almost smell their cooking. This may sound a bit confusing but it wasn’t for me. I let the narrator, Meg carry me along with story and even ventured a guess or two about who committed the murder. This book is so rich in quirky characters and even a strange event, the Battle of Pruitt’s Ridge during the Civil War. Sometimes even battles need to be questioned!I highly recommend this book to all cozy mystery lovers and quirky character lovers.
