- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Louise Sparks has moved from Connecticut to the mountains of Colorado to get away from her controlling parents and an unwanted boyfriend. She is working as a barista and has joined the Field County Dive Team. Her captain is Callum Cook who has really caught her attention. She delights in seeing if she can upset his careful control. Callum is a neat freak who is obsessive about organization and order in all phases of his life. Lou is definitely a more casual person. But Lou has a talent for making Callum happy which their colleagues have noticed and quick to tease them about. One winter's day when they are practicing ice rescues, Lou dislodges the headless and handless body of someone who had been dropped in the reservoir attached to a weight. She feels a responsibility to try to identify him and find out who murdered him. Callum decides to help her with her investigation primarily to keep her out of trouble. It really looks like trouble has targeted Lou. She has her truck tires smashed and her propane tank tampered with. She is at a loss because she hasn't made any enemies in Colorado and can't imagine who would be doing this to her. If the tire slashing hadn't happened before the body was discovered, she could think that someone was warning her away from her investigating but she was already targeted before the discovery.Callum is there as Lou's protector. Lou, however, is determined to keep the independence she developed after leaving her controlling parents. She worries that letting Callum protect her will make her helpless again. I loved the chemistry between Lou and Callum. This is the first book in a series. The book ends with the stalker problem solved but the mystery of the body is the reservoir is still unsolved in this book. I can't wait to read FAN THE FLAMES to find out what happens next in the mystery and in the lives of other Field County rescue personnel.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I love a good Katie Ruggle romance. In this book Lou is a new member of an ice dive rescue team in a Colorado town. She's building a life for herself for the first time after leaving a controlling ex-boyfriend and equally controlling parents.
Lou has made some good friends who and has just started a steamy romance with Callum, the leader of the ice rescue team. But she also has a stalker who has started to escalate to outright attacks on Lou.
Nice romance/mystery with just enough danger to make some interesting twists. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Louise Sparks does not question her decision to leave her parent's Connecticut home and become a rescue diver in Colorado, even though during her first cold water training exercise, she kicks a headless corpse that floats to the surface. The mystery of who this dead body is and why he is there begins to consume Lou's thoughts. Lou's boss, the handsome Callum Cook, agrees to help her conduct an unofficial investigation into the death of this man with whom Lou feels a connection. However, Lou's stalker has other ideas about the way Lou spends her time and starts to escalate his unwanted attention.Hold Your Breath is a fairly average romantic suspense with dialogue that seems a bit stiff and unrealistic. We learn some information about the characters as the book progresses, but for the most part, they remain flat and static. Some of the banter does add much needed interest to the story, but it isn't enough to make the characters come to life. The resolution to the stalking mystery is fairly obvious from the beginning, but there is a minor twist at the end that adds a little more to the story. Overall, however, Hold Your Breath is a disappointing romantic suspense with nothing new to offer the genre.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. I received this book for free and I voluntarily chose to review it. This story pulled me in and wouldn't let go. There was a lot of suspense and danger. I don't know if I could have kept going. It just kept coming at the heroine and hero. This story weaves it's way around a ice diving rescue team. A whole new area of info for me. I still think back on this story. I'll just say Wow.Because of violence, not suitable for the under 18 readers.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Lou leaves Connecticut and her overbearing parents and boyfriend and moves to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. She is training on the Search & Rescue dive team where the divers work in freezing lakes. Because she's the only woman on the team she has to work extra hard to get their trust. Lou was a lawyer in Connecticut but now works in a coffee shop so this is a huge change for her.Callum is her team leader. He's a tough and intense man with complete control over his team. Lou is quite spontaneous so his control over her actions is not easy for him. Even though Callum's approach to everything having to be "just right" and Lou blunders through life, they are attracted to each other. In this case, opposites do attract. While on a dive training Lou dislodges a body from under the ice. When she goes back to her truck she sees one of the tires have been slashed and this isn't the first time it's happened. Between Lou wanting to find out who the dead man was and having a stalker, she's got a mess on her hands. Callum gets all alpha and won't leave Lou, feeling she needs his protection.Katie Ruggle is a very illustrative writer making it easy to picture the events taking place. The book is a great read and definitely captures the reader in the story line, but that wouldn't work if she didn't have good characters. Lou is a strong, courageous woman that comes across a bit klutzy at first. But we see that's mainly because of her feelings for Callum which she tries to hide. Since she wants him to see her as capable, whenever she messes up, she feels it's ten times worse than it really is. Callum is very competent and can't abide being anything else. The differences between them was so extreme that I couldn't picture them as a couple. He had OCD, being a clean freak and she was a total slob. I wondered how they could have feelings for each other but, obviously, attraction has nothing to do with how clean or messy someone's house is.If you like suspense and action with a bit of romance tossed in, you'll like this book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5An entertaining romantic suspense read that should appeal to fans of Sharon Sala / Dinah McCall. Review based on ARC received from NetGalley.
