I had a lot of fun with this cozy mystery! This is the second book in the Cupcake Bakery Mystery series but it could be easily read as a stand-alone novel. Fans of the series will enjoy seeing some of their favorite characters from the first book back for this installment. This audiobook never had a boring moment since there were so many things going on in the story. This was a rather short audiobook that I was able to finish up in just a couple of days and really enjoyed myself in the process.Thing get moving pretty quickly in this story and there is really a whole lot going on in this one. Melanie's mom has a big date that she is very excited about. Melanie and Angie are teaching a couples cupcake class with some pretty interesting clients. They also decide to host a contest that brings one very determined senior citizen to their bakery. There is a rock star drummer shaking things up and of course, a murder that needs to be solved.Susan Boyce once again does a fabulous job narrating this installment in the series. I really enjoy her portrayals of all of the characters in the book. She really handles a very diverse cast of characters flawlessly. I think that her delivery of some of the funnier moments in the book really added to the humor. I plan to listen to more of her work very soon.I would recommend this series to fans of cozy mysteries. This book is filled with wonderful characters and it was just a lot of fun. I love that the book balances the mystery with romance and humor very well. I can't wait to read more of this series very soon.I received a review copy of this audiobook from Dreamscape Media, LLC via Audiobook Jukebox.

I enjoy this cozy mystery series especially because it is set in Scottsdale and I recognize the landmarks. It is a nice quick read with a love triangle and a mystery.

Mel's mom accepts a date after ten years of widowhood, and he is killed on it, making her mom a suspect. It doesn't take long to find a long list of persons whom he had swindled who could want him dead. Meanwhile, Angie develops a relationship with the deceased's rock-star son who is also a suspect. There's also a Valentine's Day contest being run by the shop. It's a good mystery although Mel gets herself into some situations she could have avoided due to stupid actions. The characters are likeable though so that makes up for a lot of the shortcomings of the mystery itself.

Melanie has been holding classes for couples at the bakery and in the middle of one her Mom, Joyce, comes in because she needs help buying a dress for a date that she has. This being the first date for her Mom since her Dad's death 10 years before, Melanie agrees to help her go shopping. The next day, after numerous shops, Melanie tries to bribe an elderly man sitting outside the dressing rooms, to say that her mom looks great in whatever she comes out in. When Joyce appears, the man keels over with an apparent heart attack. Joyce decides that the dress is a knockout and buys it on the spot. The evening of the date, Melanie gets a call from her mother, to come quickly, she thinks the dress has killed the man she was out with. The antics in this book as terribly amusing with love life problems abounding. The mystery wasn't terribly heavy but the storytelling was great.Nice quick little cozy which has me craving cupcakes!

What I liked: I enjoyed the mystery of this book had to offer. I also liked that it is a fast fun read. My favorite characters are Mel and Joe.

What I didn't Liked: The only thing I can say that I did not like in this book is a couple of characters. I still do not like Olivia even though she has a little part in this book and I did not care for "Roach". Also the author left us hanging at the end of this book so you want to pick up the next one right away to see what happens to Angie.

Overall Impression: I liked this book just as much as I did the first one and I can't wait to read number three. I felt a little bad for Mel in this one. First she is having trouble getting her romance to move along and then her mom becomes a suspect in the murder of Baxter. Mel's mother is so nice who could even think she would murder someone. Angie is trying to find a relationship in Roach who is Baxter's son even though she still has feelings for Tate. I love the addition of the new character Martin. He is such a cute little old man who comes up with some great comebacks. I had no idea that the murderer ended up being who it was I had it all picked out to be someone else. Then a small cliffhanger at the end of the book left me wanting to plunge right into the next one - but I will not be reading it until September. I think overall this was a good cozy mystery and am glad I have continued with this series. 5 stars

This was a great second book in the series - I enjoyed the mystery quite a bit and although I guessed who did it when he was first introduced, I still enjoyed the ride. The characters are getting better and I like the subtle change in 'mom'. I'm looking forward to the next in the series and happy that I won't have to wait too long.

I will pre-warn readers that I am going to rave about BUTTERCREAM BUMP OFF in a complete fangirly way! I am just starting to get back into cozy mysteries again, and I certainly chose a great series to start with. I absolutely adored SPRINKLE WITH MURDER, the first book in the Cupcake Bakery Mystery, and I loved the second book, BUTTERCREAM BUMP OFF, even more.BUTTERCREAM BUMP OFF puts Melanie's mom in the spotlight, as Joyce is a suspect in a murder case. During her first date in many decades, Joyce's date dies half-way through her date! It's up to the dynamic duo of Tate, Angie and Mel to try and solve the case, and stay out of trouble. There is cupcakes, there is a murder and there is some toe-curling romance, how can you not love this book? The mystery was good, and I didn't pick out the murderer before Mel did, which was a nice surprise. The romance was absolutely red-hot. I will not give away too much because I want everyone to go out and read it, but look for some definite tension, and lots of romance amongst all our favourite characters!Lucky for me I grabbed DEATH BY THE DOZEN, the third book in the series, this week from my library. So needless to say I will starting the next book right away!

This was a fantastic follow-up to McKinlay's first cupcake cozy. Melanie Cooper and her friend and business partner Angie DeLaura are still plagued by bakery rival Olivia, confused about men and baking up delicious cupcakes (recipes included!). When Mel's mom goes on her first date in ages and the date, well, doesn't go quite as planned, Mel's sleuthing kicks into high gear. And once again, the secondary characters and love interests are well fleshed out and the addition of senior Marty Zelaznik was inspired. I hope to see more of them all in the next installment!

Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura own Fairy Tale Cupcakes with their friend and not-so-silent partner Tate Harper. The three of them grew up together in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the bakery is located. It's just before Valentine's Day, and Melanie is teaching a couple's class, featuring such creations as "Kiss Me Cupcakes" and "Cupid's Bliss Cupcakes" (recipes included). During the first class, Mel's mother Joyce bursts in to announce that she is going on a date for the first time since Mel's dad passed away ten years earlier.A few days later, Mel's evening is interrupted by a desperate call from Joyce with the news that her date Baxter Malloy is dead. They eventually learn that Baxter has been strangled, and as the only person present, Joyce is the prime suspect.Mel is determined to prove that her mother is innocent, and when it's revealed that Malloy was running a Ponzi scheme, all of the investors come under scrutiny. This book was a quick and fun read, though it often strained the limits of believability. (How did those two women manage to run a successful bakery when they kept closing down so they could run personal errands?) Despite this, the further adventures of Mel, Angie and Tate should prove interesting.*FTC Full disclosure - Many thanks to the publisher, who sent me a copy of the book for review purposes.

A nice fluffy cozy mystery. The characters were fun enough, but none of them had enough depth to truly be compelling. In fact I keep mixing up which of the 2 friends is blonde and tall or dark and short. Either way it was good for some laughs and an enjoyable afternoon.

Not as good as the first, just a little to over the top in parts, I'd really rate this as a two and a half star book but gave it three because a couple of the scenes were laugh out loud funny and I really liked the new characters Marty and Roach but especially Marty. The hair hat wearing oldster really added to the story.

I enjoyed this... I don’t necessarily recommend the audio. It wasn’t bad, but it was hard to really visualize who I believe the characters were *supposed* to be because the voices felt... a little aged, dated, and dowdy.

Mel and Angie have plenty to keep them busy, running their cupcake shop, but they still have time to try to track down a murderer. Mel’s mom is finally going on a date, but it doesn’t end well, especially for her date. Now her mom is a suspect in his death, and Mel stops at nothing to snoop out the truth to clear her mom. Peopled with interesting characters both good and bad, this entertaining cozy is liberally sprinkled with humor. The second in the series, this book works as a standalone, but the characters’ backstory will have you wanting to read the first one if you haven’t already, and you’ll be wishing for the next one, to find out what trouble Mel and Angie stumble into next.

This “cozy” mystery involves the three owners of a cupcake bakery: two young women, Melanie (“Mel”) Cooper and Angie DeLaura, and their fellow best friend from forever, Tate Harper. When a man who Mel’s mother is dating turns up dead, Mel tries to solve the mystery on her own. Meanwhile, Angie starts dating one of the prime suspects for the murder, which causes Tate to realize he has always been in love with Angie. As for Mel, she is in love with Angie’s brother, but experiences an unexpected attraction to the detective officially in charge of the murder case.Cupcake recipes are included after the story, sweetening an otherwise amateurish package.

Mel Cooper’s mother Joyce is out on a date for the first time since being widowed almost ten years ago. Her date is Baxter Malloy, who turns out to be a sleazy con artist, a smooth operator who preys on wealthy older women. When he winds up dead while on the date with Mel’s mom, there aren’t a lot of people to mourn and many who have strong motives to have wanted him dead.Of course, there’s no reason why Mel and her cupcake-baker partner Angie would want to stay out of this police investigation. After all, they’re worried that whoever killed Baxter Malloy might just think that his date for the evening saw something and want to get Joyce out of the way, too.The strongest characteristic of this series is the great main characters – Mel, Angie, and the men in their lives. And in Buttercream Bump Off, there’s two more men added to the mix: Roach, a well-known rock star who falls for Angie; and Marty, an elderly man who attaches himself to the Fairy Tale Cupcakes Bakery and hopes to win their drawing for a cool night on the town. All this and recipes, too!!

Till now I've read three Jenn McKinlay books. None of them have hit the high notes. Sometimes a cozy can be too full of romance and fun. I've rated boring and nice cozies 5 stars before. On the other hand, there are some cozies that not only are boring but suffer from bad writing. All of this give me food for thought. As for this book, I liked the romantic angle a lot. I just wished that not every book has a sensational kisser in its folds. Makes me feel kind of jealous. So I think it's safe to say that the bits that don't gel with me are targeted towards women. That is fine with me. There are quite a few brilliant women writers around. I respect cozy writers, especially the good female authors. This book had too many suspects and it set up the murderer as one whose identity won't shock us. Though there was not one character that was outright irritating, there was not one who stood out as interestingly layered, except for maybe Mel and Angie. The movie quotes were fun and never got old. That's about it.

Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura have their hands full running their cupcake bakery and dealing with arch-rival Olivia Puckett. But their lives are about to get a lot busier – someone has killed Baxter Malloy and Mel’s mother is the chief suspect as she was out on a date with him at the time. Mel is desperate to clear her mother’s name and she starts trying to find the real killer. She has plenty of suspects to choose from but there is a major complication – Angie is dating one of them.“Buttercream Bump Off” is the second book in Jenn McKinlay’s Cupcake Bakery cozy mystery series – a series I like more and more with each book. The series is humorous and at times the humor can be over the top (their encounters with Olivia are very funny but the repeated references to Mel’s lack of a sex live were way overdone) but most of the time the humor is enjoyable. What I really like about this series, besides the bakery setting (there are recipes at the back of the book and you are sure to crave cupcakes while reading it), is the relationship between the three main characters (Melanie, Angie, and Tate). I love the close relationship between them and the complicated romantic relationships. To her credit, McKinlay takes what seems like a typical cozy mystery premise of two people in love who may not know it yet and turns it completely upside down – this adds much to the book and no doubt future books in the series. The mystery itself is well plotted with plenty of suspects, although I did figure out who the killer was. The part where the killer is revealed was scary, funny, romantic, and sexy all that the same time – not an easy thing to do but McKinlay pulls it off brilliantly.“Buttercream Bump Off” is another fun cozy mystery by Jenn McKinlay.
