About this audiobook
British audiences, however, fearing increased political radicalism as a result of the French revolution, received it with more hostility. The Age of Reason presents common deistic arguments; for example, it highlights the corruption of the Christian Church and criticizes its efforts to acquire political power. Paine advocates reason in the place of revelation, leading him to reject miracles and to view the Bible as an ordinary piece of literature rather than as a divinely inspired text. The Age of Reason is not atheistic, but deistic: it promotes natural religion and argues for a creator-God.
Thomas Paine
English-born Thomas Paine left behind hearth and home for adventures on the high seas at nineteen. Upon returning to shore, he became a tax officer, and it was this job that inspired him to write The Case of the Officers of Excise in 1772. Paine then immigrated to Philadelphia, and in 1776 he published Common Sense, a defense of American independence from England. After returning to Europe, Paine wrote his famous Rights of Man as a response to criticism of the French Revolution. He was subsequently labeled as an outlaw, leading him to flee to France where he joined the National Convention. However, in 1793 Paine was imprisoned, and during this time he wrote the first part of The Age of Reason, an anti-church text which would go on to be his most famous work. After his release, Paine returned to America where he passed away in 1809.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book should be essential reading for all schools that purport to teach Religious Education. Thomas Paine lived in the time of "Enlightenment", when many staunchly held views were being questioned. His style of writing is perfection. Paine can put down in print exactly what you are thinking, but are unable to articulate. Written 200+ years ago, it is still relevant, if not more relevant in these times of religious extremism, than at any time since it was written. Read it! I'm sure it will change your view of the Bible and NT, even if, like me, you are already an enlightened soul.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I'm assuming that if one is looking at reviews of the Age of Reason, they already know what it is about, and are looking for information about whether *this* edition is a worthy candidate. So, let me say right up front: yes, it is. :-) This is an excellent version of this classic.
Some may not know that Thomas Paine wrote at least part of the Age of Reason while in prison, imprisoned in France by the French revolutionaries. It is thought by some that he only escaped being executed because of a clerical error (the cell door sign marking him as bound for the guillotine being misplaced); he was released after James Monroe pulled some strings for him.
Paine was a deist, and did not observe a particular doctrine or align himself with a particular church (the dictionary defines 'deist' as "A deist believes there is a God who created all things, but does not believe in His superintendence and government."). In the Age of Reason Paine makes the case *against* organized religion, and even the bible, arguing for a more rational explanation for the order of things, while still acknowledging the existence of a creator.
For example, he says "The most extraordinary of all the things called miracles, related in the New Testament, is that of the devil flying away with Jesus Christ, and carrying him to the top of a high mountain, and to the top of the highest pinnacle of the temple, and showing him and promising to him all the kingdoms of the World. How happened it that he did not discover America, or is it only with kingdoms that his sooty highness has any interest?"
Words sure to get the religious powers that were in a knot!
In our current age, of unreasonableness to the extreme, especially religious unreasonableness and intolerance, we definitely need a bit more reason. The Age of Reason is as timely today as it was back when it was first released. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely LOVE this app. Whether while I'm at work or in the car I can't imagine not listening to my Audiobooks daily. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy listening to books but honestly I wonder what took me so long to discover Audiobooks.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A Must-Read for the Open-Minded! Thomas Paine is brilliant. He presents his arguments plainly, in a way that can be understood easily and powerfully. The pure and simple philosophy found in deism, professed by Paine, cannot be denied. This work spoke to me on a profoundly deep level. Thank you, Thomas Paine, for this great gift and for your efforts in the pursuit of a free-thinking revolution.
