About this audiobook

The book that started it all! Little House in the Big Woods is the first book in Laura Ingalls Wilder's treasured Little House series, which is based on her life growing up as an American pioneer.

Told from four-year-old Laura's point-of-view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town. And every night they are safe and warm in their little house, with the happy sound of Pa's fiddle sending Laura and her sisters off to sleep.

And so begins Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier history and a heartwarming, unforgettable story.

Laura Ingalls Wilder

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

It's a lovely, charming, touching story to be sure. It's more than that of course. It's a valuable resource for anyone interested in 19th century America.
This is a really lovely recording. The tunes and songs are a treat and draw you right into this other world.

I loved hearing how in bygone days they lived, made cheeses, bread, cookies, corn meal cakes, hunted animals, preserved it. wish it had been longer. must read for children and adults. My 9 year old twins loved listening to it and going to sleep.

This audiobook made me feel sorry for other audiobooks LOL. The narrator turned reading into a performance art. It was just exquisite. Pa's fiddle music and singing was so charming.

I love the accuracy of the time of the setting. It really takes me back to the days when life was much simpler. It was hard work but very rewarding.

I'm sorry but this did not appeal to me whatsoever. I know I'm not its target and that I don't have the nostalgia factor on my side. And perhaps that had something to do with it. But the fact that it has no plot and no character development doesn't help my cause. I can't say anything about the characters because I don't know them. They are just there. To top it off, the writing style didn't make me feel a single thing.
I guess this book just felt flat for me.

Fun to listen to, though the book does have some racist language that was common when it was written.
