About this audiobook

A personal and powerful essay from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the bestselling author of Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun, based on her 2013 TEDx Talk of the same name.

‘I would like to ask that we begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start: we must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently…’

What does “feminism” mean today?

In this personal, eloquently argued essay – adapted from her much-admired Tedx talk of the same name – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century, one rooted in inclusion and awareness. Drawing extensively on her own experiences and her deep understanding of the often masked realities of sexual politics, here is one remarkable author’s exploration of what it means to be a woman now – an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.

It is a good book and I agree with the general outline Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is proposing. I even think that is a needed voice because most of the feminist literature we receive is based on Western North American and European experiences. The only problem with the book is that it still holds a binary naturalistic approach which considers men and women in a biologist manner leaving outside of the range of feminist other identities such as the LGBTQI.

Some excellent points made in this nonetheless still very transphobic.

This is a wonderful essay on exactly what the title says. We should all be feminists, and we should all know what it means to be feminist. It is not being an angry woman who can't find a man. It is not being emasculated man with no power. It is recognizing that there is a power imbalance between men and woman, and fixing that problem should acknowledge that it is related to gender.I would give it five stars, but this isn't inclusive, and that was noticeable.

Thank you for clearing out, what exactly means the word feminism and why it isn't a wrong name (only it means more than just the problem of gender - but of course the gender is the biggest, world deviding problem). Thank you for specifing the problem of gender. Thank you for adding the experience from Nigeria, as the culture of the country is not very known in my country - Czech Republic.

I love how she would tell stories of women's experiences to show the gender inequality. It just lack something.

For a short little essay, this really packs a punch.

Based on Adichie's TEDx Talk of the same name, this essay delves into what feminism is in the twenty-first century, and what it has been like previously in both the U.S. and Nigeria. It forces us to think about institutionalised behaviours and explains why this divide in gender can do more harm for both men and women.

Points were brought up in this that I was so used to and were so normalised to me, that I didn't even realise that women were being discriminated against. Feminism can get a lot of negative press but this is very well written and I would recommend that everyone reads it.

It's really intuitive how men and women are perceived differently, and actions must be taken to change it. Good read!

This is a book that every one should read. I love the way how the author narrates about feminist. And why we have to be feminist, most of all WHAT IS ACTUALLY FEMINIST? because most of us have mixed thought about it, this book is well explained.

It’s a conversation, one with the reader, even seemingly with one voice, she satisfyingly speaks for both the reader and herself, asking and answering questions the reader might have (which I also had) - an indulgence of what makes us human, thus it’s easy and feels normal to accept. As a Zimbabwean and African, I can also relate. Thank you for the great conversation.

Light hearted and short - so unlike any other feminist text. As a English feminist it was fascinating to listen to the Nigerian experience of womanhood and feminism but her experiences were still relatable.
