This was an okay book - well written in that it really gave you a feel for the town and the characters in it. I initially figured that it was primarily supposed to be a mystery book (and in some respects, it was), but it really seemed to focus quite a bit on the coming-to-terms relationship between the narrator and his father (if that's the right way to put it).

Rob Slater left Kingdom County, WV 25 years after a grisly murder and his brother's subsequent suicide. He vowed never to return, but his father's ailing health brings him home. Upon arriving, he is swept up in a new murder case - this time involving Lila Cutler, the only woman he ever loved. Corrupt small-town cops and deeply buried family secrets conspire against Roy as he attempts to aunravel the mystery behind what really happened to his brother and his relationship with Lila.
