He was one of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate in chemistry and the first African-American chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1899, he faced the struggles of segregation. He beat all odds by getting his high school education, being accepted into university and finally going on to study at Harvard. His intellectual perseverance and conviction resulted in key breakthroughs in chemistry.
