About this audiobook

Birthday presents for mothers are never right-they're always too big, too small, or the wrong color. So when a young girl's mother simply asks for a homemade birthday cake, the girl thinks her troubles are over. Her happiness quickly disappears, though, when she hears the name of the cake her mother wants. The girl knows she won't find a High Rise Glorious Skittle Skat Roarious Sky Pie Angel Food Cake recipe in The Joy of Cooking. It will take a secret ingredient, a clumsy uncle, a grand piano, and some angelic visitors to help the girl make this wonderful gift for her mother. But baking it is only half the adventure; the biggest surprise is yet to come. Nancy Willard is the prize winning author of more than 20 books for children, and received the Newbery Medal in 1982. Her delectable tale of food, magic and love is as heavenly as the gorgeous birthday cake.

Author

Nancy Willard

Nancy Willard has loved William Blake’s poetry from the day she first heard it. While writing the poems in this book, she built a six-foot model of the inn, decorating it with moons, suns, stars, and prints of Blake’s paintings. The model with its residents—the characters that appear in this volume—stands in her living room. Nancy Willard published her first book when a high school senior—an inset in the Horn Book, which was called A Child’s Star. Formerly a lecturer in the English department at Vassar College, she is the author of a number of well-received children’s books, including Sailing to Cythera: And Other Anatole Stories and The Island of the Grass King: The Further Adventures of Anatole, both winners of a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award.

I love this story about a daughter who wants to bake a cake for her mothers birthday with the help of angels. However it is the illustrations by Richard Watson that make this book wonderful.

This book is a favorite of mine. I found it in the doctor's office waiting room and fell in love with the pictures and the story. The narrator and protagonist is a girl who wants to give her mom a good birthday present. Her mother says that she wants a special birthday cake that the little girl's great grandmother made. The narrator must track down this secret recipe in time for her mother's birthday.Willard tells the story in a conscientious way with perfect timing. While it is a children's book, so one really hopes for a happy ending, Willard adds enough conflict so that the reader hopes that the narrator can succeed but is not sure that she will. Willard also creates some fun and fascinating characters in this family. This book is a joy to read even as an adult. The illustrations are gorgeous as well. They were the reason I picked up the book in the first place and kept me hooked. I can't say if I would love this book as much as I do without the illustrations.
