About this audiobook

Fanny Hill, one of the most popular novels of the 18th century, traces the rise of its heroine from prostitution to middle-class respectability. Condemned in its own time on grounds of indecency, the book was the subject of several lawsuits until as recently as the 1960s. For today’s reader, the work holds as much fascination as when it was first published, not only as the foremost example of English erotic fiction, but also as a literary classic in its own right. • One of the most popular books of the eighteenth century, with several editions appearing at the same time. It is also one of the most prosecuted and banned books in history. • Clare Corbett’s lively recording breathes life into this controversial classic. Her previous Naxos AudioBooks credits include the erotic classics Pamela, Shamela and Venus and Adonis.

John Cleland

John Cleland wrote 'Fanny Hill', also known as 'Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure', in two instalments whilst serving time in Fleet Prison for a bad debt. In 1749, Cleland was arrested for obscenity, yet denied responsibility for the novel. The book was officially withdrawn, and not officially published again for a hundred years. However, it continued to sell well and was published in pirate editions.

The first pornographic or erotic novel. It follow the pattern of 2 letter written to 'madam' telling of Fanny's early life , when she is presently wife to Charles and very happy.
The story has been described as operatic. Young girl is tricked on arriving in London, to enter brothel. She falls in love, elopes with lover. Lover disappears and she is forced into the arms of her landlady. Who sells her to a businessman. Just when she is set for life, Fanny ruins this and is cast out. Now she becomes a full prostitute living with Mrs Cole. She resells her virginity and acquires a new lover. He dies. But all ends happily after some very beady escapades , when Charles returns and finds her.
