About this audiobook

"Bell imagines a suburban world where no one really knows what's happening behind all those drawn blinds. In Bell's take, though, even the people inside don't really know what's happening. That's where his brilliance, and the brilliance of Bring Her Home, rests."—Providence Journal

In the breathtaking new thriller from David Bell, bestselling author of Since She Went Away and Somebody I Used to Know, the fate of two missing teenage girls becomes a father's worst nightmare....

Just a year and a half after the tragic death of his wife, Bill Price's fifteen-year-old daughter, Summer, and her best friend, Haley, disappear. Days later, the girls are found in a city park. Haley is dead at the scene, while Summer is left beaten beyond recognition and clinging to life.

As Bill holds vigil over Summer's bandaged body, the only sound the unconscious girl can make is one cryptic and chilling word: No. And the more time Bill spends with Summer, the more he wonders what happened to her. Or if the injured girl in the hospital bed is really his daughter at all.

When troubling new questions about Summer's life surface, Bill is not prepared for the aftershocks. He'll soon discover that both the living and the dead have secrets. And that searching for the truth will tear open old wounds that pierce straight to the heart of his family...

This is one of those scenarios where the cover deceived me. This was definitely not the highly enjoyable read I was anticipating.

The premise was interesting enough: father finds badly beaten daughter and wants to find out what happened to her. Perfectly reasonable, perfectly intriguing. But then, the story actually begins and I stopped caring almost immediately. And the major reason is Bill. He is an absolutely terrible character. I don't even know where to start by describing him. His thought process makes no sense, as he flits from one thing to another in his pursuit for the "truth"... and he was absolutely terrible at it. He stays dogged about one thing and really never shifts from that perspective until the very end. I don't like his impulsive and violent nature; it seemed almost comical because of how ridiculously it was portrayed. He was also constantly repeating everything that everyone says, to the point where I got super annoyed. The "clues" just happened to fall in his lap; everyone was just SO eager to confess and tell him their dirty little secrets. It was all just such a mess. I really thought that this novel would hit it home for me but in the end, it just didn't work for me in any way whatsoever. Only 1.5/5 stars from me!

I received this novel as an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my opinion of the book or my review itself.Bill lost his wife less than two years ago, and now he fears he has lost his daughter, Summer, too. But when the police tell him Summer has been found after being missing for days, it seems too good to be true. As Bill sits by Summer's hospital bed, he has to wonder if he could be this fortunate to truly get his daughter back--and how well he really knows his own flesh and blood. What happened to Summer and her friend? And who exactly made them disappear? This is a book full of twists and turns, which I always love! Just when you think you have everything figured out, Bell throws another curve ball at you. The mystery is definitely a suspenseful one that kept me guessing.I found it hard to like the character of Bill. I suspect at least a part of this was the author's purpose, but I think I was supposed to end up liking him more than I did. I of course was rooting for him to be safely reunited with his daughter, but he had a lot of major character flaws that didn't really seem to be counterbalanced or resolved in any way.I also was able to predict one of the twists almost entirely, which did take away a bit of the surprise. While I prefer other writers' psychological suspense, I always enjoy Bell's books. He spins a good mystery. I'm just always left wanting a little bit more.

Bill Price's life has been in turmoil ever since his wife died. His 15-year-old daughter Summer is also suffering the loss of her mother. One day Summer and her best friend Haley disappear. Not too long after they disappear, the girls are found, one of them Haley is dead and Summer is badly beaten. As would any parent be , Bill is livid, how can someone do such a horrific thing. He sits vigil by his daughter's bedside, along with his sister. There are so many questions, how did the girls happen to be taken, who did it and why? As days go by though, things don't seem to be as simple as they look. Many questions are asked by the police that that Bill has no answers for.As time goes by, things get even more difficult. Through memories of Bill's, we learn more about his wife and her death and some problems he has had with Summer. Things are not as they seem and Bill is determined to find out what happened to the girls. Some of the answers he is not prepared for and not what he had thought. This book is a great psychological thriller and will keep the reader turning the pages. There were times I was a bit frustrated with Bill, but as a parent, I could not understand what he was going through, having never been in that situation, but I did have empathy and as the book progressed, a lot of things were a bit easier to understand. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

A teenager not being home at curfew time, a phone call no parent wants to get, and a lot of questions.Summer and Haley were the best of friends since first grade, and now that they are teenagers they share secrets and go everywhere together.Going everywhere together one fateful night turned into a nightmare for Bill, Summer's father, and Haley's mother. The police were investigating everyone who had known the girls and everything that had happened to Bill and Summer before and after the death of Summer's mother a year ago. I suspected a few characters as I continued reading and one in particular. The police never had a handle on things because something new would turn up to turn the investigation back to square one. Some of the findings were unbelievable.BRING HER HOME led us through the horror of a child gone missing and dying as well as learning the steps taken in a police investigation with this type of crime. The characters and their emotions were credible, but trusting a few of them was difficult. Bill was very emotional to the point of doing crazy things, but who wouldn't when your daughter was missing. The teenagers did some things that were quite unimaginable. The neighbor, Adam, was too nice to be believable. The secrecy of teenagers was one of the major themes and was very well done by Mr. Bell.My only criticism is that BRING HER HOME was a bit long and dragged out.All in all, though, the book kept me guessing, and the end was good. 4/5This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation by the publisher and NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Since I read my first David Bell book years ago, I have devoured them all and he remains one of my favourite authors. Bill is raising his teenage daughter Summer by himself as his wife Julia died the year before in a tragic household accident, an accident that Bill feels much guilt for. Lately Summer has been different and their easy relationship has become more of a struggle. When Summer disappears, Bill is frantic to find her and then she's found, very badly beaten along with body of her dead friend. What happened to the two girls? Who did this to them? Bill never leaves his daughter's side as she lies comatose until a new development makes him go search for the answers himself. There were some twists in this book, some that I found predictable but David Bell always writes a riveting thriller. Layer after layer is peeled, taking us deeper into the mystery. Who can you trust? Who knows things and won't tell? Is it sometimes better to leave some things alone, maybe the not knowing of some things is better. As always, I very much enjoyed this one. It's a great read by a great author.

Another excellent story by David Bell. There were many characters involved in this tale. Each one made this a real page turner. The story centers around three teenaged girls although Summer is the main character. I highly recommend this book to mystery lovers.

I think I might have read too many mysteries and thrillers to be surprised by this book and its plot twists.Bring Her Home takes place in the aftermath. A year-and-a-half after Julia Price's death, her husband Bill finds himself facing another tragedy: the disappearance of his daughter Summer. Summer was with Haley when they both disappeared, and a few days later, both of them crop up again, one dead and one severely injured. Investigators make a few assumptions about the victims and well, you already know that in these stories assumptions are never good. It turns out that Bill knew his daughter less than he thought he did, and as questions arise about Summer and everyone around him, it looks as though the answers will be found only if Bill is brave enough to confront both family tragedies.Bill was not a likable character for me, by any means. But I'm sure his flaws are what gave the book its voice, realistically speaking. He did feel more balanced than other protagonists I've read, and though his paranoia was warranted, I became quickly frustrated when he continually jumped to conclusions. Still, there is something about having limited knowledge, provided by unreliable narrators, that make a story interesting. For me, the plot itself was average. There are a few twists given away in the official blurb itself, which is a bit of a shame because I would've liked it more if I hadn't seen it coming. The build-up was sufficient, and the reveal was well thought-out, but it was a bit predictable, as I had read my fair share of mysteries. The writing style was definitely fluid, though, and it did make the book an interesting read. I liked the individuality in the voices each character contained, and I thought this especially added to the dialogue. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good thriller (with a beautiful cover, by the way), but it wasn't mind-blowing for me.

Bring Her Home by David Bell is a stand alone mystery about Bill Price and the disappearance of his daughter, Summer. This was a story that kept me on the edge of my seat. There were mysteries within mysteries which I loved. It's a story that portrays some of the feelings people go through when a loved one goes missing. The reason I gave this a three star review is the fact that religion is brought up in the book which did absolutely nothing for the story, in my opinion. There were also discrepancies throughout the book, such as the wrong character's name being used, which will hopefully be caught in the final editing. I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I found this to be a rather enjoyable read. After really enjoying "Somebody I Used to Know" and "Since She Went Away", I jumped at the chance to read David Bell's newest release. I do have to say that I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the others that I have read but I still found it to be a solid story. I liked the format of the book with short chapters that seemed to move really fast. I found myself wanting to read this for hours at a time just to see what was going to happen next. This book is told from Bill's point of view. I can't say that I ever really liked Bill all that much but I did understand why he acted as he did. Bill is still grieving the sudden loss of his wife a year and a half ago. As this book opens, Bill is called to the hospital to be with his daughter, Summer, who has just been found after being gone for several days. The girl she disappeared with is dead and Summer has a long recovery ahead of her. This is a book that I think readers will enjoy more if they go in as blindly as possible so I am not going to go any deeper into the plot. I did find some of the twists in this book to be rather predictable. As soon as one big twist was revealed, I found that I had a pretty good idea about what would happen next. The second half of the book wasn't as predictable for me and I found myself reading at a much faster pace.I would recommend this book to fans of mystery thrillers. It is a very well done novel with a whole lot to the story. I can't wait to see what David Bell comes up with next.I received an advance reader edition of this book from Berkley Publishing Group via NetGalley.

Bill Price is a widower trying his best to bring up his fifteen-year-old daughter, Summer, by himself. Both are still reeling from the unexpected death of Julia, Bill's wife and Summer's mother, eighteen months ago. One evening, Summer and her best friend, Haley, disappear. Days later, one of the girls is found dead and the other severely injured, and Bill wants to find the person(s) responsible.Following "Somebody I Used to Know" and "Since She Went Away", this was my third book by David Bell. I enjoyed it, but can't help comparing it to the other two, and unfortunately, I didn't find this one as gripping, mysterious or suspenseful as the others. There was a mix of surprising twists and parts that were completely predictable. It was a nice change to read something with a linear time frame and a single point of view (Bill's), though his interior monologue became slightly repetitive at times. However, the chapters were short and generally, it was quite a quick read and kept my attention.Overall, entertaining enough and I would give it 3.5 stars if I could, but if you haven't read anything by this author before, I would suggest checking out some of his earlier books, too.I received an ARC via NetGalley.

This was a decent thriller but I thought it would be better. After a couple of surprising twists at the beginning, I had figured out who was behind Summer's disappearance before I was even a third of the way through the book. This is an easy and fast read - great for the beach. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley.

Ok, I have to say that readers are in for a real treat with this book. Mr. Bell brings a rich storyline with endearing and complex characters that will have you all in until the last page! From the first moment that I opened this book and started reading, I was hooked. I felt the pain of Bill as he tried to cope with the tragic accident to his daughter. Through the investigation, Bill learned that he really did not know anything about his daughter. They had really grown apart after the loss of his wife. I liked that the lead detective was on a first name bases with Bill. It made Detective Hawkins more relatable as he too experienced so many emotions through the whole ordeal. Another reason that I liked this book so much is because the author did not try to force me to go down one path knowing that there would be a twist. Therefore, it felt natural as the characters had their secrets revealed at the appropriate times in the story. Bring Her Home is a tour de force from start to end!

This was not my favorite of the author's books and I read most of them. I'm a big fan of David Bell's and always get excited when I see he has a new book out. There was just something about this book that didn't connect with me. Most of the book is Bill Price looking for his missing daughter Summer. I think that is the part where I lost a lot of interest. It just seemed to drag on. Some of it seemed unbelievable, especially Detective Hawkins allowing Bill to do whatever he wanted during an investigation. Most of the book was predictable. I was able to figure out who abducted Summer from the very beginning and what probably happened to her mother.Bill Price recently lost his wife due to a freak accident in the kitchen. Now he is left with a teenage daughter, who is pretty much acting like a regular teen. Summer is staying out past her curfew and even calls the cops when her dad grabs her arm. From the very beginning of the book Summer and her best friend were missing and then Bill got the call that the girls were found badly beaten in the park. From this point it's pretty much just Bill trying to figure out what happened to his daughter with a few twists and turns thrown into the story. If you liked David Bell's previous books, give it a try. This book just wasn't for me. I did enjoy the ending. Everything gets wrapped up and you find out the reason why everything happened. Even though I didn't love this book, I look forward to reading more of the author's books. Thanks to NetGalley, Berkley Publishing Group and the author, David J. Bell, for a free electronic ARC of this novel.

Bill's wife passes away unexpectedly. If that isn't bad enough his 15 year old daughter turns up in a park beaten and her friend is dead.Who would attack two young girls so ruthlessly? Bill is determined to confront the mistakes of his past in order to save his daughter Summer. This was a quick little thriller. The beginning dragged a little but it picked up the pace by the end. The real problem for me was that I could see every revelation coming. I knew who who did what and how it was connected. The bad guy was not very subtle in the story. That said there were a few good twists. While the book was not earth shattering it was enjoyable enough.

Summer and her best friend have been missing for 2 days and her father has just received word. Two girls have been found in a local park. Both girls are beaten beyond recognition: 1 is clinging to life in the hospital and 1 is dead. Both girls' appearance is so similar that they could pass for twins...just like Summer and her friend Haley. As both girls parents begin to unravel what happened to their children, they must also discover if this pair of girls might be Summer & Haley...and which one is living and which one is dead...This book was awesome! I literally could not put it down and was thrown for plot twists almost the whole way through the book. This is a must-read!

An anonymous call leads the police to the local park where they find two teen-age girls who have been missing for several days. Severely beaten, one is dead, the other critically injured. Where have the girls been? Who is responsible for their savage injuries? Haley and Summer have been best friends since first grade. How, Summer’s father wonders, could something like this happen? Who is involved? If the police can’t find the answers, maybe he’ll have to find them himself. But the cost may be far more than he’s willing to pay . . . .Summer’s father, Bill Price, is the central character in the telling of this tale, a frantic father in search of answers and justice. But Bill is over-the-top out of control, his rage barely contained, his anger often inappropriately unleashed. As a result, he seems more a caricature of the desperate father he’s supposed to be, an unfortunate situation that makes it difficult for readers to empathize and often leaves them shaking their heads in disbelief. Yes, people keep secrets and, yes, dads don’t know everything about the lives of their fifteen-year-old daughters, but neither of these truths translate into a plausible reason for his detestable behavior. Nevertheless, readers are likely to keep the pages turning in an effort to find out exactly what happened to the girls.Astute readers will easily deduce the major twist in this story prior to its reveal; even so, a few unexpected events in this mostly predictable tale may bring readers a surprise or two.

This book definitely kept me reading. However, it's the morning after that the questions kept popping up in my mind...how did that body get in the casket, why weren't the boys questioned more seriously, what was the point of the weird guy in the woods? Still, I have to say it kept me reading!

BRING HER HOME is another gripping, character-driven mystery/thriller from David Bell. I flew through this book. The shorter chapters that ended with a new clue or reveal really quickened the pace. What would come next? I was compelled to keep reading. This is the kind of book that can easily be spoiled with too much talk of the plot, so I'll just say wow. Lots of delicious and disturbing surprises made this an entertaining read. The characters were complicated, flawed, and easy to empathize with. They could be frustrating at times, but given their situation, it's understandable. This was an enjoyably nerve-racking thriller that was hard to put down. It also had that emotional edge that I love in David Bells' novels. I've read several of his books, and BRING HER HOME is probably my favorite. Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

First of all I would like to thank Berkley and Goodreads for winning the ARE (Advanced Reading Edition) of "BRING HER HOME" by David Bell for my honest review. The genres for this book are Mystery and Thriller.I like David Bell's  intriguing and captivating ways of writing a story. The author's descriptions where the story takes place are easy to visualize. I can see the kitchen in the house, the various rooms, the woods, and the neighborhood. The timeline of the story is in the present. The author describes the characters as complex and complicated. Some characters seem to be suspicious. Bill Price lost his wife a year and a half ago, and now his daughter Summer is missing. Two young girls have been found. One is badly beaten up, and the other is dead. At first Bill stays by the bed where is daughter Summer is fighting for her life. She is beaten beyond recognition. My first thoughts are could this really be Samantha? What happened? What is the motivation and why?Be warned. There are many twists and turns in this book. What seems to be may not be.  The suspense in this book is a killer!!  When I came to some conclusions, I was proven wrong. This is a book full of surprises and secrets. I would highly recommend this book that keeps you guessing until the end. Happy Reading.

David Bell’s ‘Bring Her Home’ hits an emotional punch on many fronts and results in a page-turner. The mystery is not anything special, the reader can figure out the “twists” fairly easily. It is the evolution of the Bill, the father, which is the real story. He is a flawed character that finally recognizes the mistake he made. We don’t know why he is the way he is, but we know that anything from his past isn’t too bad because his sister Paige comes to help in his time of need. Her tenacity helps Bill take steps that any desperate parent with a missing child will do. ‘Bring her Home’ feels a bit like ‘The Girl on the Train’ and will be a good summer read. If you are a parent, you may start asking your kids where they are going when they leave the house more! I received this book from the Publisher (via NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review.

The title, then the premise intrigued me and I really wanted to enjoy this book. This is the first story I have read from this author and would give his others a try. This one deals with a father, Bill Price, searching for his missing daughter who may have run away, murdered and/or kidnapped. He pushes the cops and I’m surprised one detective is easy on him. There are some twists, red herrings but nothing close to a mystery or a thriller. Also, it seemed to go one way, then another as though the other wasn’t sure which way he was heading. Not suspenseful, but I haven’t given up hope. The author writes well, is descriptive and the narrative works. I just had a hard time believing the story line.
