About this audiobook

Among the autobiographies of generals and statesmen, these memoirs rank with the greatest. Mark Twain hailed them as "the best of any general's since Caesar." Refreshingly candid and honest, Grant's assessment of his humble beginnings, his rise to fame, and his greatest triumphs and failures has become an American classic.

I had no idea how eloquent US Grant was... thi book edited by Mark Twain (probably two of the most famous people of their time is an absolute joy to listen or read.

How we could have let the revisionist of history edit or even Cliff- Note Ulysses S Grant is one of the tragedy’s of our times. This book is a Classic Discovery!

Along with Plutarch’s Lives, this was Mark Twain’s favorite book. Civilized, noble, heroic, magnanimous. Should be required reading for all US citizens, and, along with Plutarch, all citizens of the world.

Grant was a great figure and wrote this classic while dying. The reading is marvelous .

Know very little about this man or this period in American history. From his memoirs at least Grant sounds like a very decent man who is able to write about himself in an endearing self-deprecating manner. His details of Mexico and 49er San Francisco along with his impressions of a bullfight were especially interesting . The reader makes it sound like Grant is telling you his story personally. Looking forward to Volume 2

An unusual book. Very well written but with relatively small detail on the grand affairs of the Civil War. If you're going to read this, get yourself a good atlas and use it to follow troop movements, battle sites etc.

Read during and just after our trip of the great Civil War battles and this book ends at Vicksburg where our battle sites also ended. An unusual book. Very well written but with relatively small detail on the grand affairs of the Civil War but great detail on the minutiae of the events Grant was involved in. His paths and ours crossed at Fort Donelson and Vicksburg which was very interesting. A valuable book for those interested in this very interesting, and quite compelling, time/
