      It is 2044, 15 years after the revolution that ousted the Royal family, and Howie Pond, the head of the Press Office of the President of the UK is getting married the next day. His plans may be put on hold, however, because the pelicans are missing from St. James Park - pelicans that are to be the background of the press announcement unveiling the new flag that the President has designed - a pelican with a mackerel in its beak. Meanwhile, Howie's fiance, Britt Pointer, has distractions of her own. Her boss has given her a day to find out who the current (and mysterious) owner of Windsor Castle is, and she still has quite a few last minute wedding details to attend to. After a long nonfiction book and the emotional ups and downs of another book, I wanted to read something that was light-hearted. This book kept popping up as an ad on my Kindle and promising to be a "comic thriller" with "British humour and exciting action" so I thought I would give it a try since I could read it free. This is the second book in the series "We Have Lost..." I'm a big fan of British humor, and two of my favorite genres are British mysteries and alternate reality/parallel universe science fiction. The first book had 62% 4-5 star reviews so I thought it would be safe to give it a try. At first, I was largely underwhelmed. Howie seemed to be a fairly dull character, who loved to eat, and Britt seemed to be an enthusiastic, go-getter type, but not too bright, in my opinion. I know the book is supposed to be humorous, but her alternate identity is "Pellie Cann." Really? And after almost an entire chapter of puns about Howie's "cooked goose" literally and figuratively, I almost gave up reading. There were also several things that made me scratch my head. First, there was a revolution against the Royal family that resulted in a change of government to a republic with a president. Since the Royal family has no role in the Parliamentary government of the UK, I was a little unsure about how running them out of the country would result in the Prime Minister being overthrown by a President. Second, apparently in the London of the future, there is no internet, but they can still send emails. Last, there is no cellular service, but everyone carries something called a "bleeper" which is a means to send and receive messages which are strangely similar to text messages. However, I persisted, and I can honestly say that by the end of the story, I was actually engaged and enjoying it. I really did care whether Howie and Britt were going to solve their problems and get married. Honestly, I can't give it an unequivocal thumbs-up, but it was not bad. I think the author was trying a little bit too hard to try to make it funny, and frankly, I think I would have enjoyed the book more had he not tried to pack in so much humor. I think the second half of the book wasn't as "punny" and since I decided to suspend my disbelief about the "head scratchers," the second half of the book was a much better experience. We Have Lost the Pelicans is not a book for everyone but if you enjoy a British humor, alternate reality, science fiction mystery, then you would enjoy this book.
