About this audiobook

“Jessi Kirby’s books just keep getting better and better, and The Secret History of Us is her best yet. It beautifully touches on all the most important things in life—love, family, friendship, memory, and bacon. I loved it.”—Morgan Matson, New York Times bestselling author of The Unexpected Everything

In this gorgeously written, emotional novel that fans of Sarah Dessen will enjoy, a teenage girl must piece together the parts of her life she doesn’t remember after a severe collision leaves her with no memory of the past four years.

When Olivia awakes in a hospital bed following a near-fatal car accident, she can’t remember how she got there. She figures it’s because she was in a coma for a week, but as time goes on, she realizes she’s lost more than just the last week of her life—she’s lost all memory of events that happened years ago. Gone is any recollection of starting or graduating high school; the prom; or her steady boyfriend Matt. Trying to figure out who she is feels impossible when everyone keeps telling her who she was.

As Liv tries to sort out her family and friends’ perceptions of her, the one person she hasn’t heard enough from is Walker, the guy who saved her the night her car was knocked off that bridge into the bay below. Walker is the hardened boy who’s been keeping his distance and the one person that has made Liv feel like her old self…whoever that is. With feelings growing for Walker, tensions rising with Matt, and secrets she can’t help but feel are being kept from her, Olivia must find her place in a life she doesn’t remember living.

Oh my god! I loved it! And the moment that the title of the book made perfectly sense was amazingly done! Those little twists coming and shocking me but still proving how much of a strong person Liv is! The ending was perfectly imperfect! By that I mean it did not fall into clichés, it was a very satisfying and beautiful ending and of course story!

Wonderful story that left me thinking about so much more in life. It's so short and we should really be who we want to be.

I really enjoyed this book, but it definitely could have been longer. I was fascinated by the storyline, Liv being in a car accident and doesn't remember anything from the past 4 years. She just graduated, so that means she doesn't remember anything about high school, including her boyfriend of 2 years. I feel like there was a lot there that had potential to really pack a few punches, but that never happened, the story always remains close to the surface and never dives in too deep. Sure, the story isn't all that original, but it was interesting and could have been a 5 star read for me, but the fact that the ending seemed so rushed left me feeling slightly disappointed. I wanted more. I wanted to read more about Liv trying to piece her life back together and I wanted to read more of Walker and his storyline. I guess I just wanted more from the story overall. I wavered between giving this 3 or 4 stars, but I decided on 4 stars because I did enjoy the story and it was a quick read that I didn't want to put down. It's definitely a book you want to pick up when you don't want to read anything too heavy.

This was a gentle, beautifully written book about a girl who has forgotten the last four years of her life after a shocking accident where she had to be resuscitated. The opening scene set the book to perfection and had me wanting to read on. However, after the first chapter "The Secret History of Us" had no action and very little romance, but it had a delightful setting and strong, relatable characters.I liked Liv, a lot! She was complicated, interesting and I could understand her confusion as she struggled to remember the past, rebuild forgotten relationships and forge new ones. Her development felt real, as did her emotional turmoil. I also loved her family. They were so supportive of Liv and Sam, her older brother, brought some humour to the story. I just wish Walker, the boy who saved Liv from drowning, had had a larger role. He was introduced early on, but was only on the peripheral until nearly the end. I wanted to know him more.My only grumble about this book was the end. Although I enjoyed how the author brought everything together, it did feel a bit rushed compared to the rest of the novel. Overall, however, "The Secret History of Us" was a touching story of self-discovery and finding out where you belong.

A special thank you to Edelweiss and Harper Teen for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The opening of the book has some really solid writing with an instant hook. The main character, Liv, is pulled from the water after the car she was in went off a bridge into the bay below. She appears lifeless and is given CPR.

When she awakes in the hospital, she can't remember any details of the accident. Assuming that the amnesia is more of a side effect from being in a week-long coma, Liv tries to remember recent events only to discover she actually can't remember the last four years! She doesn't remember high school, why she isn't friends with her former best friend, or her doting boyfriend, Matt.

Liv has to rely on other people to fill in the gaps. She grows incredibly frustrated because she feels like things are being kept from her on purpose. Desperate for answers, Liv turns to Walker, the guy who was responsible for saving her life the night of the accident. Despite her seemingly perfect boyfriend, she can't ignore the growing feelings she has for Walker. Olivia needs to find what her new normal is and where she belongs in a life she can't remember.

Why I didn't rate this book higher was because the ending was rushed. It was like Kirby was restricted by page count, or perhaps she has another story in the works? Either way, it fizzled, which is too bad because the start of the book was some really great writing.
