Heart of Malice is an urban fantasy with some romance. Alice Worth is a private investigator who uses her magical powers to solve cases involving the supernatural. She is also trying to stay under the radar of the federal agency that regulates supernatural beings. And stay hidden from her grandfather’s evil organised crime syndicate. For years she was forced to use her magic for the cabal and finally escaped by faking her own death.Alice is hired to investigate a case of a missing magical artefact. She enlists the help of a ghost as well as a very attractive werewolf. In addition to the werewolf, she has also attracted the interest of a powerful vampire. The case becomes more dangerous when it becomes clear that the missing artefact could kill thousands if it falls into the wrong hands. Heart of Malice is a good introduction to a new urban fantasy series with noir elements. Alice is a powerful mage trying to do good to make up for her troubled past. She is a tough character, and while the male romantic interests are suitably alpha, Alice can hold her own. The world building was well done. The different supernatural beings, the way the magic works and the relationship between supernaturals and humans was interesting and well developed. I liked that we were introduced to this world naturally while the story progressed without a lot of exposition. Alice’s backstory was slowly filled in as the reader got to know her character. This book is well written and kept me interested (and reading past my bedtime). I found the title a bit confusing since I couldn’t see how it related to the story. I would recommend this book to fans of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Some sexual content, but not gratuitous.

I loved this smooth mix of a Film Noir heroine with a low-key attitude towards her magic abilities. Alice Worth is a private investigator who's just been handed a stolen goods case that keeps getting weirder and weirder. Add in a ghost magician partner, a new werewolf boyfriend, and a dark and dangerous vampire frenemy, and the reader is treated to a cast of characters who all have their own stories to tell. Alice herself has trust and privacy issues, while keeping a scary family history a deep secret. The title Heart of Malice didn't give me a clue as to what this book would be about. Other than a mildly disappointing title, this book is well-written. The story flows evenly, the main characters are likeable, and the villains are truly evil. The explanations of the different types of magic sound credible. I am happy to strongly recommend Heart of Malice, by Lisa Edmonds.

I think was a great book filled with action that I couldn't put down. I loved learning about this new world and am ready to keep reading about Alice Worth and her world. The characters weren't bad and the writing was easy. I laughed out loud several times from some of the simple joke/lines thrown in. I recommend to anyone who wants to read something interesting and light.

Good piece of writing, interesting characters, dark backstory and action and dialogue that keep things moving. Alice Worth sounds like an intelligent magic user with a hidden past that begs to be explored, while the present has its own problems. Read the sample only but it leaves the reader wanting to know more.

I found this book to be a very enjoyable read. The author presents a lot of backstory information in a clear manner, and the characters behave in a realistic way. I particularly enjoyed the plot being driven by events and character development, rather than by tedious misunderstandings that so often serve as the main drivers of action. I eagerly await further books in this series.

    Refreshing...

What a great first book. There is plenty of action, magic, vampires, werewolves and evil to make an intriguing tale, My only disappointment is that there is only one book in this series so far and I have to wait for the rest. Lisa Edmonds is an excellent story teller. The relationships between the characters and their actions are well thought out and easy to believe. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and am eagerly awaiting the next one.
