About this audiobook

One of America’s foremost statesmen and diplomats, Henry Kissinger originally trained as an academic with a particular interest in foreign policy. He was interested in how different countries, in different periods, in all parts of the globe have attempted to impose order on a chaotic and often violent world. Kissinger has consistently written about foreign policy for specialist and general readers alike. Published in 2014, World Order draws together his thinking on how we make sense of the world politically. Kissinger identifies four principal competing methods by which order has been and is still sought. Those four conceptions are European, Chinese, Islamic, and American. None of these has been accepted as dominant. Kissinger asks whether a new, universal world order can be developed today. And if so, should it be based on a “realistic” approach, accepting that conflict is frequently unavoidable, or a “liberalist” approach, seeking international cooperation? World Order has been widely praised for its scope and scholarship, even by Kissinger’s critics.

Since listening on Scribd to this audiobook "Macat Analysis of Henry Kissinger’s World Order, A: Reflections on the Character of Nations and the Course of History" - I have come around to a better understanding of why Russia invaded Ukraine in late February 2022. Henry Kissinger - going by this account - would understand that NATO and the European Union have transgressed against World Order, that is not based on international law but on a balance of power. Under this historical understanding, war is built into the DNA of human civilization, since Old Testament times. An imbalance of power between nation states can therefore lead to war if the weaker states possess resources or assets that increase the aggressor's power or national security. Under this view, NATO and the European Union, though reckless expansion to take over the former satellite states of the now defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - is responsible for upsetting World Order. We can believe, with justification, that NATO and the West is responsible for the War in Ukraine. This view was articulated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov when he spoke at the 77th UN General Assembly on Saturday, 24 September 2022. Does the Russian foreign policy elite view the history of the world through similar learned eyes like Henry Kissinger's in his final years?.
