About this audiobook
“I was thrilled. I was shocked.” —NPR
“Stunning twists and turns.” —BCCB (starred review)
In this gripping debut novel, seventeen-year-old Cat must use her gene-hacking skills to decode her late father’s message concealing a vaccine to a horrifying plague.
Catarina Agatta is a hacker. She can cripple mainframes and crash through firewalls, but that’s not what makes her special. In Cat’s world, people are implanted with technology to recode their DNA, allowing them to change their bodies in any way they want. And Cat happens to be a gene-hacking genius.
That’s no surprise, since Cat’s father is Dr. Lachlan Agatta, a legendary geneticist who may be the last hope for defeating a plague that has brought humanity to the brink of extinction. But during the outbreak, Lachlan was kidnapped by a shadowy organization called Cartaxus, leaving Cat to survive the last two years on her own.
When a Cartaxus soldier, Cole, arrives with news that her father has been killed, Cat’s instincts tell her it’s just another Cartaxus lie. But Cole also brings a message: before Lachlan died, he managed to create a vaccine, and Cole needs Cat’s help to release it and save the human race.
Now Cat must decide who she can trust: The soldier with secrets of his own? The father who made her promise to hide from Cartaxus at all costs? In a world where nature itself can be rewritten, how much can she even trust herself?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this book. I was hooked the moment I started reading it! I love the twists and turns it brings you through. It’ll get to a point and you feel like you have everything figured out then it changes dramatically. I would definitely read it again.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The concept reminded me of "The Rains" by Gregg Hurwitz. It's on OK story and I'll keep following along. It sometimes gets a bit over technical on some of the explanations and I don't feel a strong attachment to any characters but I'll give the next book in the series a fair chance.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was expecting something very different from this book, I thought it was going to be more about a plague virus but it was more about futuristic technology than anything else. I listened to the audiobook book and I had to keep rewinding because I couldn’t grasp what was being said. It was ok, but maybe it’s because I was expecting something else from it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Nice ending, I will follow the whole story. Nice science fiction book
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I love a good science fiction, I love Dystopia.
I really like this book, but I think it is too much for me.
Too much science-genetics stuff, too much story, too much action. I almost did not make it to the end.
I love a good story, I love that its thorough with all the information and science, genetics, coding and technologies stuff. Thanks to scribd audiobook, I made it to the end. And the story, is very packed. Like the author wants to roll out all her cards and planned plot-twists and all the actions into this book. To think that this is only the first book, i would hate to think the 'adventure' they will face in the second and third book. Though I really want to know what happened to the Virus, to Catarina, to Cole, the mere thought of the 2nd and 3rd book, exhaust me.
If you are a hardcore science fiction lover, this book should be on your list. And please, just tell me what happened to the end. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5very enjoyable book with lots of twists in it. I want a second one to come out.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazingggggg. The story was compelling as well as heart-wrenching . The twist thoooo
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This story was exciting, captivating, and gross AF in some parts to create the perfect story.
I feel like the plot twist should have been so obvious and yet I felt completely blindsided by it- including my jaw dropping and screaming “no way!” in my car.
I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to start book 2!
