About this audiobook

Lindsey Norris and her staff are gearing up for the Briar Creek Library's annual Dinner in the Stacks fundraiser. The night of dinner and dancing is not only a booklover's dream - it's the library's biggest moneymaker of the year. But instead of raising funds, Olive Boyle, the new library board president, is busy raising a stink and making the staff miserable.

Although Olive acts like a storybook villain, Lindsey is determined to work with her and make the event a success. But when Olive publicly threatens Paula, the library's newest hire, Lindsey cracks like an old book spine and throws Olive out of the library.

The night of the fundraiser, Lindsey dreads another altercation with Olive - but instead she finds Paula crouched over Olive's dead body. Paula may have secrets, but Lindsey and the rest of the crafternooners know she's not the one who took Olive out of circulation. As the plot thickens, Lindsey must catch the real killer before the book closes on Paula's future...

Okay, not great. Liked the palling around of the Librarian and the former Star.

Briar Creek is a great little place to visit. And the library's fundraising event, a Dinner in the Stacks, brings together people from all over, including cameos by some of McKinlay's other characters. No one is really sure why the unpleasant Olive Boyle would want to be the library board president, but she is, and as such, is raising quite a ruckus over the event. With her sites set on taking over Briar Creek and the mayor's job, it's no surprise that she is the body discovered in the stacks. Lindsey has worked hard to make this event a success, and she, along with the other regular characters of the series, make quick work of discovering the villain in this case.

There are some series I have a tendency to hold back and read when I need a pick-me-up because they're special. Jenn McKinlay's Library Lovers is one such series. I know the author and her publisher would rather I gobbled them up as soon as each new book came off the press, but sometimes a girl just has to have a go-to book when she needs a little extra sunshine in her life.Death in the Stacks provided me with just what I needed. I was back in the midst of a cast that has become old and dear friends-- especially with cameo appearances from McKinlay's Cupcake Bakery and Hat Shop series characters. Another thing that makes me smile is the continuing evolution of the lemon, Ms. Cole. Ms. Cole proves that there's hope for us all. Not only did the entire cast keep me smiling (well, not Olive Boyle-- she is a very worthy body in the library), the mystery kept me guessing. There's lots of good misdirection, and I loved how the cupcake and hat shop folks kept appearing and disappearing from Lindsey's suspect list. All in all, it was another marvelous visit with the gang in Briar Creek, and if there's one quote that I'll take away with me from this book, it's this: "There was nothing she loved better than laughter in the library." Libraries are, indeed, repositories of knowledge, adventure, dreams, and laughter. They are one of the cornerstones of civilization. Thanks, Jenn, for reminding us of this in such an enjoyable way.

Thank you, FirsttoRead, for my complimentary review copy.

In this eighth installment of McKinlay's Library Lover's cozy mystery series, Briar Creek librarian and amateur sleuth, Lindsey Norris and her staff are busy preparing for the annual Death in the Stacks fundraiser. Despite the fact that the evening is greatly beneficial to the library, the new board president is more of a hindrance than help. Olive Boyle targets Lindsey and her staff, especially Paula, the newest employee, because she feels that her background makes her a bad fit. And because Lindsey hired her, she is not qualified for her position and Olive wants her out. On the big night, all is going smoothly until Olive takes the stage. Her performance is cut short and so his her life when Lindsey finds her with none other than Paula crouching over her. Although the evening wasn't planned as a murder mystery, that's what it becomes. And, everyone is a suspect. This was the first book in the series I read and I liked it. Even though it works as a stand-alone because references are made to returning characters and past events, I, personally, would have enjoyed it more if I had read the series in order. Still, it was a fun read with a good story, quirky characters, and lots of humor, play-on-words, and puns. The cozy mystery genre is one I recently got into, thanks to Kate Carlisle, mentioned in this book, and author of the Fixer-Upper and Bibliophile mystery series(I am fortunate to be a member of her review crew, Kate's Raters). I especially enjoy books about books and this one was a good intro to the series. I look forward to reading more by this author.

This series is great, I've always wanted to work around books so this really scratches an itch. The mystery in this one is also especially good.

Lindsey the librarian is organizing a fundraiser for the library, *in* the library - a benefit dinner in the stacks type thing - all while trying to fend off the new president of the library board, who is a nasty Karen type, and also keeping said Karen from bullying the other library staff. She's clearly not the only person who can't stand the woman, because she ends up murdered between shelves at the end of the night. And because so many people hated her, lots of people are suspects, including Lindsey and one of her staff members.Another solid entry in the series. Kept me guessing until the end.

Lindsey is getting ready for the library’s annual fundraiser, but Olive Boyle, the new library board president, is causing her a world of grief. She has threatened to get a staff member as well as Lindsey fired, and insists that Lindsey can’t stop her. Well, someone stopped her in a most unkind way, and Linsey is determined to clear her coworker, hopefully before anyone else dies. Someone is quite good at manipulating those attempting to solve the crime, and it comes down to whom do you trust to be truthful. It’s a well told and intriguing tale filled with delightful characters, and sure to please cozy mystery readers.

Death in the Stacks by Jenn McKinlay is a well-plotted and entertaining cozy mystery. This eighth installment in the Library Lovers Mystery series easily stands on its own.

Briar Creek Librarian Lindsey Norris and the rest of her staff including Paula Turner are about to host their annual fundraiser when newly elected library board president Olive Boyle begins issuing a plethora of unreasonable commands. She is planning on instituting a dress code, demands numerous staff changes and announces her decision to fire Lindsey.  Needless to say, Lindsey is upset by the disagreeable woman's high-handed decrees but with the fundraiser to set up, she tries to ignore the unpleasant woman. The night of the gala, Lindsey, her staff and the other attendees are stunned when Olive takes to the stage and proceeds to defame the library staff. At the end of the night, Olive is murdered and it appears Paula might be her killer. Lindsey is certain Paula is innocent and despite her earlier promise not to become involved in any more murder cases, Lindsey and her friend Robbie Vine begin their investigation in an effort to clear Paula's name.

Lindsey really tries to keep her word to her boyfriend, Sully, not to endanger herself by investigatng Olive's murder. However, when police chief Emma Plewicki has no choice but to consider Paula a suspect, Lindsey cannot sit on the sidelines waiting to see whether  or not her co-worker will be arrested. Unfortunately, since Olive was a particularly mean and vindictive woman, the list of suspects is vast.  With Robbie at her side, they begin their quest for Olive's killer with her posse of mean girl friends, Amy, LeAnn and Kim. When it appears the trio have rock solid alibis, Lindsey and Robbie then turn their sights to Olive's ex-husband Kyle and his current wife, Molly. Once again they hit a dead end, so they then question Olive's sister, Margaret, where they discover the reason for the sisters' estrangement. Quickly clearing Margaret, Robbie and Lindsey find themselves at somewhat of dead end. However, in a sudden turn of events, they are certain they know murderer's identity, but are they on the right track?

With an endearing lead protagonist, a cast of quirky yet likable characters and an intriguing murder to solve, Death in the Stacks is a fast-paced mystery. The plot is interesting  and easy to follow despite a bit of confusion due to the sheer number of characters introduced early in the story. The mystery element is well executed and  Jenn McKinlay  does an outstanding job keeping the murderer's identity and motive for the crime under wraps until the novel's exciting conclusion. This rather light-hearted addition to the Library Lovers Mystery series is sure to appeal to fans of cozy mysteries.
