About this audiobook

Imagine a time when the gods turn a blind eye to the agony of men, when the last of the hellions roam the plains, and evil stirs beyond the edges of the map. A time when cities burn, and in their ashes, empires rise. Alexander, Macedon's sixteen-year-old heir, is on the brink of discovering his fated role in conquering the known world, but finds himself drawn to a newcomer. Katerina must navigate the dark secrets of court life while keeping hidden her own mission: kill the queen. But she doesn't account for her first love. Jacob will go to unthinkable lengths to win Katerina, even if it means having to compete with Hephaestion, a murderer sheltered by the prince. And far across the sea, Zofia, a Persian princess and Alexander's unmet betrothed, wants to alter her destiny by seeking the famed and deadly Spirit Eaters. Weaving fantasy with the shocking details of real history, New York Times bestselling author of Sex with Kings Eleanor Herman reimagines the greatest emperor the world has ever known, Alexander the Great, in the first book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series.

Legacy of Kings is fully-loaded teen fantasy that happens to have an historical personage in it but nobody (and I mean Nobody) in thier right mind would call this historical fiction. And given that it was billed as historical fiction, I find this Unforgivable which is a shame because as a YA romance/fantasy, this was a very entertaining read.

I recieved a free copy of this book from Harlequin Teen through GoodReads.

I've got incredibly mixed feelings about Legacy of Kings, but I am looking forward to reading the next in the series, which itself means quite a bit, I suppose. As it stands, my instinct is simply to say that Herman might have been aiming to do too much in this first book of the series. In a lot of spots, I felt like I wanted and needed more depth in order to see a subplot or a character as something more than either derivative or a stereotype. As a result, interested as I was, I didn't feel really and truly engaged with the book until toward the end. I should say, perhaps, that I did really love the first few chapters... but for the vast majority of the book, I was left wanting more. I wanted things to be more unique and less predictable, but that I think a lot of the problem here came from there just being so much going on--and so many focus characters--that the depth and detail that might have alleviated other problems just never had a chance.Herman's writing is lovely, and there is a lot to admire here, but I think it's the second book that will tell me how to really feel about this one. In many ways, no matter what, I have to think this might have been more powerful if it were split into a few books that focused on the separate characters, especially since there's one character who has no interaction with the others, and easily could have been separated in order to give more focus to this one.If the idea of historical fantasy centered around magic and Alexander the Great (in his youth) appeals to you, then I'd recommend this. Otherwise, as I said, a lot will depend on the second book...

Despite a rocky start, I really ended up enjoying this book! SO many POVs could have been a disaster, but I looked forward to each character's chapters. I am excited for the next book!

Honestly, my favorite characters were Zo and Alexander. Although the evil, darker characters such as Olympias were fascinating to read about as well because they were given backstories that sisn't excuse their actions, but led me to understand their motives better. Also, I loved the friendship dynamic between Alex and Heph... I questioned how they continue to be true friends with so many barriers and misunderstandings, but I am a sucker for bromances!

Also, even though I kind of guessed the twist, the surprise ending has me anxious for the second novel. On an unrelated note, the aristotle quotes before each section, the descriptions, and the history bits really showed the author did her research and made the book feel very 340 BC. I haven't read any books about Alexander the Great or this time period in Greece so I was drawn in by the newness of the story.

My only complaint was that I wasn't quite feeling the Jacob/Katerina love drama. Still, it barely detracted from the novel.

I read this book at the perfect time, as we are learning about Ancient Greece in History. Also, I flew through the last half. I highly recommend this to lovers of stories with magic, mythology, royalty, and epic settings!
