- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love this book. Even the squirrely kiddos were completely entranced by the end of it. It's perfect for winding down at the end of a storytime.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the second Max book I have read. The main character, Max is an adorable kitten. It si time for bed and he is very sleepy. He completes his bedtime rituals, laps up his milk, brushes his teeth, even cleans behind his ears and says good night to all his friends and prize possessions, his fish, his box, his spider, and then looks up to say goodnight to the moon. But, where is the moon? It is not in the sky. Max heads off to see if he can find the moon. Will he find it? Will he be safe? Will he be able to go to sleep if he can not find the moon?
The illustrations are vibrant and uncluttered. Max is portrayed as tiny in a big world with a dog, a tree, houses, buildings etc. showing his small size. I loved the colours used in this story. They are night time colours, yet still colourful enought to attract the attention of the listener. This is a perfect bedtime story for little ones with a happy, but sleepy ending. I recommend this book to all family libraries to be read aloud over and over again.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and Sourcebooks Jabberwocky in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I am in awe over how adorable and perfect Max at Night is. Where to even begin...The illustrations, obviously - one of the most crucial aspects of a children's picture book. The full-color illustrations are artistically stylized to complement the story line. Max, of course, is represented boldy with opaque black and yellow coloring, while his surroundings are depicted in soft shades of blues, purples, reds, and oranges that often overlap in a transparent, watercolor-like effect. Juxtaposed, this illustrative technique lends a very "dream like" feel to the book, with Max being the only "truly awake" aspect of it despite his growing fatigue. Midway through, I have expected this book to prove to be another adorable, albeit slightly dull, "goodnight moon"-esque story. Indeed, Max does attempt to say goodnight to the moon... only to realize it isn't there. His determination to accomplish his task before allowing him to sleep perfectly mirrors the tendencies of children (and many of us adults, really) to ensure all is "right" with their world before going to sleep themselves. I was granted access to a digital version by the publisher via NetGalley, and I cannot wait to add a physical copy of this book to my children's library - I am confident they will love it just as much as I do, and it will make a great "are you sure you want to read that AGAIN?" book for the next several years.
