About this audiobook

Sir Phillip knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he'd proposed, figuring that she'd be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage. Except . . . she wasn't. The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her . . . and more. Did he think she was mad? Eloise Bridgerton couldn't marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking . . . and wondering . . . and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. Except . . . he wasn't. Her perfect husband wouldn't be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled . . . and when he kissed her . . . the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn't help but wonder . . . could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

I’m slowly getting through the Bridgerton series, and this was middling for me. I didn’t love Philip as much as some of the other male leads, but this was still charming nonetheless.

I expected a lot with this bc I love Eloise so much and I was so excited to start reading her story but her "love story" just seemed meh to me. Compare to the first four books, its just bland. Liked the book still tho esp since it tackled sensitive topics such as suicide and child abuse.

Loved the character arc for Phillip as a father but I was quite disappointed with Eloise's. She's my fave Bridgerton daughter bc she's so smart and speaks whatever the hell she wants without a care in the world which was a big deal in that era but her running away to see if she'll suit with Phillip just seemed very out of character for her, don't you think?

I was also skeptical whether they really love each other, esp in Phillip's end, considering they married only a week after they met. Sure, they've corresponded for a year but really, let's be real. Phillip's only purpose of writing to Eloise and offering her a proposal was he's looking for a mother to his children, not a wife.

I wanted to give it 5 stars but i can't. The depiction of Philip is pure 1 dimensional at times. It started nice and i had high hopes that this book will be the best of the best from the series (don't get me wrong, it is the best so far...), but as i reached the middle and then the end, the dialogue and the characterization of Philip was just wrong. He became brutal with her and even when he knows it ("She didn't say yes, but i think she wants it"), he just did what he pleased. And when he was enumerating the reasons why he married her - "He wanted to marry her so that she can free him up of all the little things [his children, his house, so he can play garden]. " - That's not a good reason to marry someone. It felt as if towards the end, Julia just said "fuck it, i've built a good character let me ruin it".
I don't know if the depiction of male characters in Julia's books is historically correct or if someone abused her so she doesn't know how a normal man should behave...

Rosalyn Landers is a superb narrator but even she couldn't redeem the fifth installment in the Bridgerton series.
Quinn does abysmally by Eloise, Sir Philip's head is stuck up his ass (I promise you, despite the steamy scenes, that man doesn't give an ounce of consideration for anyone else, so those must be *Eloise's* fantasies. That man is not giving oral to anyone), and the story itself is dry and boring.
Quinn's treatment of Marina throughout the book is awful. Not only is Philip a complete arse throughout, but in the second epilogue his daughter says she wishes her mother had killed herself sooner. The epilogue is about her meeting her husband. Philip also pretty much rapes Marina.
I love Landers as a narrator, but after a book so bad I wish I had the physical copy so I could throw it at a wall, I'm giving up on Quinn and her walking red flag characters.

My least favorite of all the Bridgerton books. I feel sorry for Eloise having to marry this very detestable man. No redeeming qualities really. She had to change who she was to "love" him. Yuck.

This book was another excellent book in the Bridgerton series! I liked Phillip and Eloise and Phillip's children (Oliver and Amanda). It was great to see Anthony, Benedict, and Colin again! In the second epilogue, we were with Amanda as she fell in love with Charles!

I just really am loving this series!

I read this book on May 6-7, 2022.

    Audiobook: Narrator - Rosalyn Landor

I really enjoyed this narration. This narrator gave each character a distinctive voice as well as bringing vibrancy to their emotions and reactions. I have to admit, I did think that Phillip was much, much older until we found out exactly how old he is and my jaw dropped. His voice in the audio was not one I would picture fitting for a 30 yr old.

I was concerned that I would not like Eloise’s story. Not that I didn’t like Eloise in previous books, I did. I was afraid she might end up being too much and her character might be overblown in an attempt to continue her independence. That wasn’t even close to the Elose here. She’s definitely still lively and independent, but in an appropriate manner for the era. I loved how she pulled Phillip out of his greenhouse and into the world around him. Namely, his children.

This book has a lot of emotion and angst mixed with some of the sweetest moments as well as plenty of wit and humor. I absolutely love Phillip and my heart never yearned or a hero to find peace and comfort within the walls of his home. I loved watching him evolve from a father distanced from his children emotionally and physically to one who connected with them and embraced them in every way.

Julia Quinn does a great job of capturing real emotions in this book. Sir Phillip was a honorable man, reserved, but had some serious anger issues. Eloise was bold, outspoken and curious. She was his opposite and she was the opposite of Phillip's dead wife. Phillip who tried to be a good Husband but felt like a failure to his 1st Wife because no matter how he tried she was never happy. Even with the scene some have deemed questionable, when he layed with his Wife in an effort to get a rise of emotion from her but he was left feeling like he did something morally wrong. He did have a right to sleep with his Wife. She did not verbally say no but her body was not engaged in making love to Phillip. Did he violate his Wife, no. But Quinn shows us that Phillip felt wrong about it. This is why Phillip never "darkened her door" again for 8 years. Between being sexually frustrated, avoiding being a present parent, and not living to his Father's expectations, Phillip was a mess. The layers of complexity made him relatable. Eloise, on the other hand was dealing with being lonely and feeling left behind. Everyone has felt those emotions. The couple came together and found healing in each other which was beautiful.

I really enjoyed Eloise's book! I think in part because Sir Phillip has so much personal baggage to work through. I really liked how they started to fall for each other, but also still had so much to learn about each other. I felt really bad for Eloise whenever she would think that he only married her to get a mother for his children. Not replacing The Viscount Who Loved Me as my favorite Bridgerton book, but it was a fun one.

Delicate sex scenes every man should read!!!Save many marriages.Beautiful,!!! Re-awakening!!! Told with delicacy and well expressed emotion, believable and well developed characters, the children were tragic before Eloisa, but she handled them with love, humour and sympathy and well judged discipline. The main Male was utterly yummy, and Eloisa made an elderly reader feel a lot younger(literally) and envious. Emoticons are emotionless thus I have n't used them. But this story is delightful and I must confess a wee bit addictive.Do keep up the audios, for us. This story was believable and draped like an exquite length of sparkling lace . The author has a fairylike touch for a historica romance. I have written a long review of which the above sentence is the last. I sent itl romance. QED

I love the Bridgertons! This book is one of my favorites. Sir Phillip is sad and a bit brooding, while Eloise is bright and happy. Phillip is attracted to the fact that she's happy - partially because his late wife was depressed and had killed herself. While Phillip is not nearly as troubled as Michael, or Simon, or even Anthony, he is an injured soul and I liked seeing him brighten up as he came to love and trust Eloise. I also enjoy the interaction in this book between Phillip and the Bridgerton boys when they come to rescue Eloise. Priceless! I must say that Julia Quinn is a master at getting men right. This is a sweet story, well written as all of Julia Quinn's books are. Well worth reading!

Redemption! To Sir Phillip with Love is so much better than Romancing Mister Bridgerton. I totally understood Sir Phillip Crane, although his actions weren't always admirable. I, too, have avoided activities that brought painful memories. And I understood Eloise, having seen so many of my friends happily married while I stood on the sidelines hoping for my own true love. And I understand how communicating by the written word comes so much easier than talking. In addition, this could be a description of me: "Her mother had once told her that she could catch more flies with honey than a sledgehammer, but Eloise never could learn to keep her thoughts to herself."As with any Regency, the question is how does our couple finally get together. The secondary question for a quickly arranged marriage is how does the couple realize they truly both are in love. These are the hooks that kept my interest throughout the novel. I was quite pleased with the novel; the only problem is that I read it too quickly and far too late into the night. This is highly recommended for folks who like steamier Regencies. It can be read as a stand-alone novel but is better read in order. I have already gotten the next book in the series.

I think this is my favorite Bridgerton book so far!
Eloise is a wonderful protagonist and I really enjoyed going through this journey with her.
Sir Philip might actually be the third hottest male lead so far, right after Colin and Simon!

The story was very well put together, I loved the intricacies it dealt with, and how a partner's depression and passing might affect not only themselves but also their partner and kids.
It was really well done and I'm so glad I picked it up.

I really don't have much to say about this so yeah, go Sir hot Botanist!

The TV series made nerd girls everywhere fall in love with Eloise, and I definitely think she was treated poorly here. What is even happening...after being fiercely independent her whole life ( to the point where she turned down 6 marriage proposals), she suddenly decides she should marry a random guy she has only met in letters? Urgh.

I was so curious to read Elouise's love story because she is such a fiercely independent woman and I couldn't imagine who she would end up. Her romance is as improbable and unconventional as I anticipated - she becomes pen pals with a man she's never met (she wrote him a condolence letter after the death of his wife who happened to be her cousin) and he proposes marriage. At first she is annoyed and flabbergasted but when her best friend and fellow spinster, Penelope, gets married - she's feeling very alone. She decides to sneak away to meet him and see if he's the marrying sort. What Sir Phillip neglected to tell her was that he had two rambunctious twins who can't manage to stay out of trouble. He's looking for a new mother for them rather than a wife - but maybe they'll find there could be more to the relationship.

I thought this Bridgerton story was a good one. I liked how the courtship was different and that Eloise takes charge of her life without the interference of her family. Phillip was a complicated character. His story was told well and with empathy.

Eloise decides to change her life when her friend Penelope marries her brother Colin. She has been writing to Sir Philip Crane for a year and getting to know him. When he suggests she visit to see if they would be compatible marriage partners.Sir Philip is a widower left with two 8-year-old twins who are out of control. Philip's first wife suffered from melancholy and more or less killed herself. He's looking for a second wife who is a happy person and who can manage his house and his children. He is surprised by Eloise because he falls in love with her. Her brothers strongly encourage the marriage since otherwise Eloise would be compromised for staying in a man's home without a chaperone. I liked the way their relationship grew and I really liked the way Eloise managed the children.

This is my favorite book of the series and with just finishing a binge of the TV series, I decided to reread it again. Eloise Bridgerton has received six marriage proposals and turned them all down, deciding to be a spinster with her friend Penelope. However, when Penelope marries Eloise's brother, Eloise decides to make a change in her life. She has been secretly corresponding with a widower who has now proposed, so she sneaks off to Gloucestershire to decide if he's the man for her. She doesn't reckon with her four brothers, nor is the situation at Sir Phillip's home what she expected.I love the writing. It's witty and funny and the interplay between Eloise (who likes to talk) and Phillip (who doesn't) is wonderful. I still think it's the best of the series.
