About this audiobook

"A charming and delectably sweet debut. Mischief, friendship, and a whole lot of heartLove Sugar Magic has it all." Zoraida Córdova, award-winning author of the Brooklyn Brujas series

Leonora Logroño’s family owns the most beloved bakery in Rose Hill, Texas, spending their days conjuring delicious cookies and cakes for any occasion. And no occasion is more important than the annual Dia de los Muertos festival.

Leo hopes that this might be the year that she gets to help prepare for the big celebration—but, once again, she is told she’s too young. Sneaking out of school and down to the bakery, she discovers that her mother, aunt, and four older sisters have in fact been keeping a big secret: they’re brujas—witches of Mexican ancestry—who pour a little bit of sweet magic into everything that they bake.

Leo knows that she has magical ability as well and is more determined than ever to join the family business—even if she can’t let her mama and hermanas know about it yet.

And when her best friend, Caroline, has a problem that needs solving, Leo has the perfect opportunity to try out her craft. It’s just one little spell, after all…what could possibly go wrong?

Debut author Anna Meriano brings us the first book in a delightful new series filled to the brim with amor, azúcar, y magia.

This audiobook gets a 1 because it kept skipping bits of the story and also the end of the book cut of. But the book itself it cute. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE AUDIOBOOK. There is an ebook version so I recommend that.

Leonora is the youngest of 5 girls and is frustrated when her mother won't let her help in the bakery to prepare for Dia de los Muertos -- she sneaks in and discovers that the women in her family are brujas, and that she has magic of her own. Exploring by herself causes all kinds of misadventures, but with her grieving friend Caroline at her side and the help of all of her sisters, Leo finds a way to make things right.I love the heavy Latinx heritage, the bakery setting (in Rose Hill, Texas), the way the older sisters decide to help rather than turn Leo in when they figure out what she's been doing. Looking forward to finding out what Leo's powers are and how the family will handle what is sure to be a handful of a situation going forward. Clever, fun, funny.

When eleven year old Leo determines that she’s from a long line of witches, she refuses to wait until she’s the right age and dives into spellcasting (without her mom’s knowledge). I kind of wish the big spell Leo attempts had been about something a little more emotional and personal for her, but it did take some fun turns and also I liked that throughout the story Leo’s shown to be fumbling her way through rather than immediately adept at magic which is more realistic and relatable to read about than a character who is just instantaneously skilled at something. I loved that so much of Leo’s Latinx culture is woven into the book, Dia De Los Muertos, the baking, the Spanish (and Leo’s insecurities about not being fluent) sprinkled throughout, but most of all I loved the sisters and how they interact with one another, they may not see things from exactly the same point of view yet they totally have their littlest sister’s back whenever she needed them. As much as I adored the flying pig cookies, for me, the true magic was in those sisterly bonds.

A super sweet story with lots of family, baking, magic, and a mischievous lead. Super easy to booktalk and would be a great choice for a summer read. The flying piggy cookies on the cover were so fun to read about!

A very cute and fun middle grade read. I would have loved reading this when I was in middle school. The subject matter is very Halloween holiday appropriate without being scary.

This is the first book in the Love Sugar Magic series. I really enjoyed this middle grade book full of baking magic and family. This was a fun read that had a lot of heart, was interesting, and very entertaining. I found myself laughing out loud a number of times while reading this! This series follows a Mexican family who owns a bakery named “Love Sugar Magic”. During the course of this book the youngest daughter, Leo, finds out her family not only bakes delicious things but does the baking with magic sometimes. When Leo decides to do magic on her own she gets herself into a number of compromising situations that were absolutely hilarious.I enjoyed the humorous parts of this book, the discussion of Mexican culture, the magic, and the interactions between the members of Leo’s family. The book is witty, heartfelt, and engaging and made a quick read for me. The biggest problem with this book is that it made me soooo hungry for baked goods!Overall I ended up absolutely loving this book. I definitely plan on continuing this series; this was just such a fun book that leaves you feeling happy and hopeful. I would recommend to those who enjoy fun and magical middle grade reads. This is one that is great for kids and adults alike!
