Consider Vivien in November 1922: she is twenty-four, and a spinster. She wears fashionable clothes, but she is plain and - almost worse in those times - intelligent. She has also published her autobiography ‘Auto da Fay’. Her most recent novel was the critically acclaimed ‘She May Not Leave’. She lives in Dorset.
