      This, the fifth book in the pragmatic fairy-tale based Harriet Hamsterbone series, delights as much (or more) as the previous four. Harriet bring her experience with dealing with fairy magic to bear when the mysterious Whiskerella turns up at a royal ball. Harriet continues to be a no nonsense hero for our times.

      This time, adventure finds Harriet at home: her parents are throwing a masked ball. “Don’t Mooooooom me, young lady! This is your chance to meet some nice young princes without terrifying them!” Harriet groaned, her visions of [dressing up as] Genghis Prawn [the unstoppable leader of the lobster horde] slipping away. “But you always told me to be myself!” “Yes,” said her mother. “You should be yourself. It’s just that when you are being yourself, it can be very alarming for innocent bystanders, and the stories tend to grow a bit when they’re repeated.”But the princes are all preoccupied with a beautiful stranger, and Harriet is distracted by the mystery: who is this hamster, how did she get in without an invitation and what sort of magic is behind her glass slippers? I think this is my favourite of Harriet’s adventures (so far). I loved the humour in this one. Marchionesses and countesses are types of female nobility, rather like duchesses, only lower down on the social ladder. (For some reason, though, female earls aren’t earlesses, but countesses. Harriet suspected that it was because the word “earless” looked like somebody who was missing ears, not like somebody with a medium-sized castle.

      Heh. What if Cinderella didn't _want_ to go to the ball? Dominating fairy godmothers, friendly stepsisters, a pet newt, and a stableboy with a perfectly reasonable line of conversation pile up to make a good story and reveal some interesting angles on Harriet's family.
