Really enjoyed the story. Wish it was longer and more detailed. The writing was very good. It was a sweet story. But the book only 100 pages left you wanting more

"From Scratch" is a book I received from Early Reviewers. This was an easy read, a book I read while traveling. The book is about a woman's journey to starting her own bakery, after the cafe where she works closes down. I would classify this book as a "nice" read. Not much substance, easy to digest, sweet--sort of like the cookies prepared by the main character, Cookie. I found some of the her personality traits to be a bit annoying. As a person in her 30's, why would Cookie think she could not do anything in the workforce other than baking? And why would she be paying for her grown up daughter's college education, if they are financially on the edge? How about student loans or having her daughter get a job to pay for her own education? I thought Cookie lacked self-confidence and backbone. The romantic interest was also rather on the wimpy side. Cookie and Murray were interested in each other for years, but neither took a step to advance past a friendship at the cafe in which Cookie served Murray his coffee? Like I said, nice read, but not much substance. Spoiler: it all works out in the end.

As a book from Canada's Rapid Reads Program - short books written by bestselling authors designed to help adult readers achieve their literacy goals - From Scratch is an interesting cross between a non-fiction self-help book and a quaint story about small town life. I have read a couple of books from the Rapid Reads program and enjoy seeing how some of my favorite authors tackle the short format required for these books. I loved reading Eva's growing enthusiasm and confidence as she navigates a college business course as a mature student and embarks on a business plan with a goal to start her own business. By the end, even my own lack of confidence at the thought of starting a small business was significantly diminished. Overall, another worthy addition to the Rapid Reads program of books.

First of all my review is probably longer than this book, so if you’re looking for a short read this is it. I think that is why the publisher calls it Rapid Reads: at 104 pages you can read it in one sitting. From Scratch is a sweet story (pun intended) about a mom working in a bakery in a small town. When she finds out she is losing her job she panics, because it’s the one thing she loves and she doesn’t think she can do anything else. She also has to help support her college age daughter who hasn’t graduated yet.The way she works through her dilemma is perfectly laid out for anyone young or old who needs a little inspiration. From Scratch is a very enjoyable light read, which would be good in e-readers. There is a bonus yummy recipe at the end. 3 stars

At barely over 100 pages and with good sized text, From Scratch is certainly a rapid read. It only took me about a half an hour to get through.Unfortunately, the shortness of the story required that events be told very quickly. As a result, I didn't feel like the characters had any depth to them and everything felt rushed. The book also felt a bit like a lecture on confidence, personal relationships, and how to start a business. Rather than a fictional story with inspirational undertones, the self-help aspect is front and center.I was actually glad the book was so short so I didn't spend more time on it.

This is a short read that lacks character development. I had a difficult time reading the book, it just didn't catch my interest.

Eva (a.k.a. Cookie) finds out that the bakery she works at is about to close. She is anxious about her and her daughter's future. With the encouragement of her daughter, good friends, bakery customers and her teacher (from the college course Eva's daughter encouraged her to take), she finds her inner drive, confidence and strengths. This is a Wonderful, but alas, short read.

I received this book from LibraryThing. Thank you for the chance to read it. However, I do not recommend it. It's the story of Eva trying to put a small business together when her employer must retire due to health reasons. The story also centers around her daughter and Murray, Eva's love interest. This tale has no depth and no qualities for recommending it.

I received this book through the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program. It is a Rapid Reads book from Orca Books. I've read quite a few of these books and I love the idea of making short, simple books available for people who have some English literacy challenges. I think this would be a great book for someone new to Canada who is thinking of opening their own small business. Eva (Cookie) has been working in a small bakery cafe for years when she learns that the owner plans to close the business in a short time. Cookie would love to buy the business but she has hardly saved any money since she is the sole support for her daughter and her salary has never allowed for much saving beyond day to day expenses. With the confidence learned from taking a course in business skills and the support of her daughter and others Cookie manages to succeed at business.
