About this audiobook
Fiona Cummins delves into the seam of darkness that runs through us all as a detective hunts down a twisted killer with a macabre obsession . . .
On still nights, when the curve of a winter moon is smudged in the flow of the River Quaggy, the dead clamor for him. And sometimes he coaxes the living to join them. To other people, his victims might be mere medical oddities. To him, they are fascinating specimens, worthy of display. Above all, he is a collector, eager for recognition even as he hides in the shadows.
Detective Sergeant Etta Fitzroy is the first to recognize the connection between the disappearance of a young girl and a cold case that almost cost her the career she's sacrificed so much for. A faceless psychopath is walking the streets of London, tantalizing the authorities with clues, taunting them with his ability to spirit his victims out from under their very noses.
Better than anyone, Etta Fitzroy understands loss. But this is one contest she will win if it kills her . . .

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Picked this up from a recommendation of a friend - WOW - gripping, literally. Read it in four hours on the plane. A fascinating take on a serial killer with solid characters and leaves you hangin' at the end....just in time to get the second one!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Rattle by Fiona Cummins is a solid debut with an original premise, a great cover and a catchy tag line. Unfolding from several character perspectives, Detective Sergeant Fitzroy is investigating a missing child case in London and soon realises it's more complex than she first suspected.Having three characters with surnames all beginning with the letter 'f' was a little confusing in the beginning. I wasn't sure whether it was intentional or coincidence (in which case it should have been changed) or an 'in joke' which should have been explained in the author's acknowledgements etc.Almost every character was overtired and needed a shower - which was understandable given the circumstances they were in - but chapter after chapter it became repetitive and same/same. What did interest me and kept the pages turning quickly was the pathology of the killer and his collection.I don't agree with the promo that the killer in Rattle is a "psychopath more frightening than Hannibal Lecter", but he was certainly unique; which is often difficult to accomplish in this crowded genre. A great debut and an author to watch.* Copy courtesy of Pan Macmillan Australia *
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Disturbing book about “The Bone Collector”, a man who searches for children with oddly formed anatomies, kidnaps them, and plans to kill them so he can keep their skeletons. Chilling. The detective assigned to the case has her own personal issues, her marriage is in trouble, plus she overreacted while investigating an earlier case. The two families whose children are taken also have issues. First in a series. I enjoyed this creepy book, but it was really disturbing!!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Etta Fitzroy, a police detective with issues (personal tragedies, anger problems leading to professional misconduct and strained family relationships) is the lead detective hunting the Bone Collector, a serial killer who kidnaps children with bone deformities and adds their skeletons to his collection. After failing to identify, let alone capture, him a year previously, Etta is now trying to find two young children who have gone missing. This is a relentlessly downbeat and miserable novel. The crimes and their motives are horrific. All the characters are depressed, suicidal, immoral or unspeakably evil. There is not one spark of joy or humour anywhere. The story moves along, but there is no catharsis or redemption for anyone involved as this is only the first part of a larger story (see ‘The Bone Collector’).Anyone who ‘enjoys’ this book is either a psychopath or should be on suicide watch.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5So much crap. I got to 44% and had to stop before I broke the Kindle. Nothing scary in this book and hello, the Bone Collector? Yeah, ripped that right off. Pick another name that isn't already used in a big series by another (more talented) writer. I would also like to warn other child-free readers that if you get disgusted with the whole "i know you said you didn't want kids but I was sure I'd make you change your mind" crap, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. The characters felt flat and the only one I felt vaguely interested in turned out to be one of those morons who ignores their spouse and drives them bonkers for want of a kid. If you have to tell yourself "I'll make them change!" before you get married, you are marrying the wrong person. This is a real button-push for me (you can likely tell at this point) and I lost any sympathy I might've given this character. Go read the Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deaver. It's a little old, but I promise it's a much better-written ride.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Former Daily Mirror Showbiz journo Fiona Cummins debut thriller Rattle has a shout out by Val McDermid no less, is rumoured to be in the works as a TV series, and has received rave reviews.Detective Sergeant Ella Fitzroy is investigating a spate of missing children: her personal life is a mess so she invests her energy into her job, trying to discover what links the abductees. A psychopath is using London as his hunting ground, stealing children with bone deformities so he can add their skeletons to the collection in his private museum. A story The Daily Mirror would love.
