About this audiobook
Princess Penelope lives in a beautiful palace with a closet full of beautiful dresses. But being a princess is much much more than beauty. In fact, every morning Princess Penelope runs right past her frilly dresses to choose from her beloved collection of pants! What she wears each day depends on what job she has to do. Will she command the royal air force sporting her sequined flight suit? Will she find her zen in her yoga pants and favorite tee? Or will she work in the kingdom's vegetable garden with pocketed overalls for all of her tools? Unfortunately for Princess Penelope, not everyone in the Pineapple Kingdom thinks pants are always appropriate princess attire. When the grand Lady Busyboots demands that Princess Penelope must wear a gown to the annual Pineapple Ball, the young royal finds a clever way to express herself. Penelope's courage (and style choices) result in her saving the day!

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Although she does enjoy wearing pretty dresses, Princess Penelope Pineapple also likes to wear pants, especially when she's doing something - yoga, gardening, hosting the kingdom's science fair - that requires more active wear. Although her sartorial choices initially make her the target of Lady Busyboots' disapproval at the Pineapple Ball, Princess Penny's brave actions, in saving the royal cat, convince everyone that sometimes princesses do need to wear pants...This debut picture-book from news anchor Savannah Guthrie and child psychologist Allison Guthrie seems to have its heart in the right place, and highlights the idea that princesses (and by extension, young girls) can be more than just decorative, and that the clothing they wear should be appropriate for the activities in which they are engaged. That said, I found the rhyming text of Princesses Wear Pants somewhat awkward - "Once at the ball, Penny forgot all her troubles. / The courtyard was brilliant with baubles and bubbles. / As the crowds climbed down the palace staircase, / None could imagine what would soon take place" - and thought the narrative was a little muddled. Do princesses wear pants because they are sometimes the appropriate and practical choice? Do they wear them because they want to, and they should have the option? Perhaps both? I also wasn't thrilled with how Penny's brother is depicted, at the close of the book. I'm behind the idea of empowering young girls, but doing it by making young boys look helpless and incompetent by comparison - especially if their helplessness is the result of their own clothing choices - seems condescending to both parties. Given that my qualms about the narrative were matched by an indifference to the artwork, this isn't one I would strongly recommend, unless one is specifically looking to address a concern about a young girl who only wants to wear dresses.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5*Disclosure: the publisher provided me with a free copy. This book left me with a bad taste in my mouth, and it wasn't just the awful rhymes. I got the feeling that the authors were saying that if you wear pants, you're not pretty, but you're practical.
