About this audiobook
The record-holding two-time National Basketball Association champion reflects on his work ethic, his on-the-court friendships and rivalries, the great teams he's played for, and what it takes to have a long and successful career in this thoughtful, in-depth memoir.
Playing in the NBA for eighteen years, Ray Allen won championships with the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat and entered the record books as the original king of the three-point shot. Known as one of the hardest-working and highest-achieving players in NBA history, this most dedicated competitor was legendary for his sharp shooting. From the Outside, complete with a foreword by Spike Lee, is his story in his words: a no-holds-barred look at his life and career, filled with behind-the-scenes stories and surprising revelations about the game he has always cherished.
Allen talks openly about his fellow players, coaches, owners, and friends, including LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Garnett. He reveals how, as a kid growing up in a military family, he learned about responsibility and respect—the key to making those perfect free throws and critical three-point shots.
From the Outside is the portrait of a gifted athlete and a serious man with a strongly defined philosophy about the game and the right way it should be played—a philosophy that, at times, set him apart from colleagues and coaches, while inspiring so many others, and lead to the most pivotal shot of his career: the unforgettable 3-pointer in the final seconds of Game 6 of the 2013 NBA finals against the San Antonio Spurs. Throughout, Allen makes clear that success in basketball is as much about what happens off the court as on, that devotion and commitment are the true essence of the game—and of life itself.
Ray Allen
Ray Allen, the most prolific three-point shooter of all time, played in the NBA for 18 years, winning two championships (2008 Boston Celtics, 2013 Miami Heat). Allen, who went to the University of Connecticut, was the 1996 Big East Player of the Year. As a pro, he averaged more than 20 points a game for 10 straight seasons.

This was a game that continued to reveal the team's character. New York steadfastly refused to let Anthony Davis beat them, and despite missing every ball handling guard and wing on the team save Talen Horton-Tucker (Alex Caruso left the game with a foot injury), the Lakers managed to find enough production from the supporting cast to win. LeBron James, who played 40 minutes in first game back in the lineup after sitting out with knee swelling, took it easy. But he says he thinks he's no worse for wear and hopes to play Tuesday night. Carmelo Anthony won't play Tuesday, but might be back as soon as Wednesday night vs. Portland, so at the least his hamstring injury isn't seen (currently at least) as that serious. So that's all good news. Or about as good as news gets these days for the Lakers, when it comes to player health. Meanwhile, LeBron was asked about his, um, "partnership" with General Manager Rob Pelinka, and whether or not he believes the team needs to make a move before the deadline. No surprise, he punted on the question - yes, you always try to get better, but he also always expects to ride with the dudes h Podcast episode

This year? 11. And in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's 114-101 loss to the Clippers, LeBron James was forced to the locker room with a groin injury. He said after it wasn't as bad as the one that cost him a huge chunk of his first season in Los Angeles (the Christmas Day Slip vs. Golden State), but that doesn't mean it's all good. James hopes to be able to play Friday vs. Sacramento. Seems unlikely now, but even if he can, the wear and tear is starting to pile up on James, who needs to be monumentally productive for the Lakers to have a chance to compete and get back in the playoff race at some point this season. That's not a good combination. So what do the Lakers do? Can they protect the health of their best player while still winning enough games for that health to matter? The Lakers are shorthanded, without Lonnie Walker IV (ill), Dennis Sch Podcast episode

The extremes are striking, particularly now while he's not playing particularly well in the aggregate. Is it something people were totally prepared for? How is it impacting the way the Lakers play? And perhaps most importantly, when it's all said and done, how does Westbrook's presence impact the effectiveness of LeBron James and Anthony Davis as a pairing? Because for the last two seasons, there has been an assumption that the combination of Davis and James, if healthy and playing at their top level, automatically makes the Lakers strong title contenders, almost independent of what surrounds them. Given LeBron's new struggles with health, is that still true? And critically, does the addition of Westbrook enhance that partner Podcast episode

Plus, the Lakers Retire Pau Gasol's #16!: Of late, The Athletic's Shams Charania hasn't exactly been the bearer of good news for Lakers fans. And Monday, talking with FanDuelTV, wasn't much different. Charania noted that while the Lakers are going to re-evaluate LeBron James after three weeks, there is certainly some belief that the actual length of LeBron's absence could extend past that mark. Well past it, potentially, calling into serious question just how much regular season action James might get before a (hypothetical) play-in matchup. Or whether the Lakers can hang on long enough to even make those last few games meaningful. And what exactly will be the considerations the Lakers and LeBron make when deciding whether LeBron can/should return to action? It's all very speculative and super-unpleasant for the Lakers, and puts that much more pressure on Anthony Davis to elevate the team, D'Angelo Russell to get back on the floo Podcast episode
