Their marriage has given well-off Joyce a chance at the family she's always wanted—and granted Odell a shot to escape grinding poverty. But all that respectability and status comes at a cost. Just once, Joyce and Odell want to taste life's wild side, without consequences …
When their new neighbors, Milton and Yvonne Hamilton, turn out to be bootleggers, the Watsons plunge headlong into good times and fast living … Until revelations of Milton and Yvonne's seedy past make the Watsons think twice about how much time they spend together.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was a great read!!! Mary Monroe is the truth. I love her books!!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Love this author! Her books are always entertaining, and are all based on basically good people who, in one way or another, have some serious secrets to hide. Lots of sharp little edges in her writing! I love it!! The dual narrators in this reading were very good. I am right away going to listen to the second book in this series. ☺️
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Very disappointing! And then, to learn that the story is "to be continued" was a real letdown. I feel like I wasted my time listening. I will not bother listening to the second part of this sad, poorly-developed story .
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was an awesome book! I couldn't put it down and finished it in one day. I am looking forward to the continuation.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Storyline keeps you engaged and waiting for whats next. Ready for part 2!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In the small town of Branson, Alabama, Mary Monroe’s descriptive scenes, complicated lives in this 1930s Depression-era story. Sometimes humorous, other times tense situations were entertaining. The story is so entwined with complex situations that was sure to come to a head. The book comes to an abrupt end but leaves you wanting more. I appreciate when an author injects history into a fictional story. Monroe introduced the incident of the Scottsboro Boys to me in which nine African American teenagers, ages 13 to 19, accused in Alabama of raping two white women on a train in 1931. The landmark set of legal cases from this incident dealt with racism and the right to a fair trial, and miscarriage of justice in the United States legal system. A very relevant issue to our current cries of systemic racism, problems and issues.Mary Monroe is a New York Times bestselling African American fiction author, well earned. I will be moving on to the next book in the series - ‘Over the Fence’.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really rate this a 4.5. Goodreads, we are waiting on a half point system. Anywho, this was a good read from start to finish and I am anxiously awaiting the sequel as the story is not even close to being done. I'm foreseeing a wild ride coming soon.
