Fredegonda, Goneril und Drusilla sind Großhexen und damit viel wichtiger als gewöhnliche Hexen. Nur eines stört sie ganz gewaltig: dass die Geister von heute nicht mehr gruselig genug sind! Kurzerhand eröffnen sie die streng geheime Mountwood- Schule, in der Gespenster aller Art in der hohen Kunst des Spukens unterrichtet werden. Dumm nur, dass der Müffelnde Druide, die Spukfee Vera und ihre Mitgespenster selbst von Ängsten geplagt sind. Als dann auch noch der kleine Geist Percy auf dem Schulweg verloren geht, ist die Verzweiflung groß. Zum Glück eilen die Kinder Daniel und Charlotte den Geistern zur Hilfe.

Toby Ibbotson is the eldest son of award-winning author Eva Ibbotson, whose novel, The Abominables, he edited with her first publisher, Marion Lloyd, after his mother's death. Mountwood School for Ghosts is his debut novel, and is based on an idea conceived with Eva, and planned out in detail by the two of them before her death.
