After attending Woolwich College she studied modern English and French literature at the University of Glamorgan. Formerly Editor on the men's style magazine Arena, Camilla Way is now a free-lance writer. Having lived in Cardiff, Bristol, Bath and Clerkenwell, she now lives in south-east London.

      The Lies We Told by Camilla Way is a must-read psychological thriller for everyone who loves good twists and gasp-out-loud moments! This was wow! I can't believe I kept this book so long on my TBR list! If this peacefully lying in your pile - get to the top of TBR! It's brilliant!

      This book concentrates on two timelines 2017 and 1986+. It is hard to understand how them two stories are connected up to the nearly very end where the connection comes out with a mind-blowing twist!

      The book follows Beth in 1986, a mother who is struggling with her daughter Hannah. You will get some "The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry" vibes so if you are a fan of that book you will love this one as well. Beth is trying everything to manage Hannah but nothing works...

      Clara in 2017 just moved in with her boyfriend Luke when Luke goes missing and Clara is trying to do everything to find him. In the process, step-by-step dark secrets come out and soon Clara realises that not everything is how it looks like.

      Heartbreaking secrets twist both stories together and you are left with so many wow and oh-no moments!

      This definitely was a gripping psychological suspense thriller that sped up my heart race many times!

      This fast-paced thriller follows Clara, who returns home from work one day to find that her live-in boyfriend, Luke, is not at home. When he’s still absent the next morning, she starts to get very worried. As Clara loops in his family, the police, and Luke’s best friend Mac, she begins to uncover secrets that both Luke and his family held from her and from each other.Meanwhile, in alternating flashback chapters, we also hear the story of a little girl named Hannah, as told by her mother. Growing up in the 1980s, Hannah seems to be a somewhat disturbed little child, who scares her mother and torments small animals. How do the two stories line up? What happened to Luke? Who can Clara trust? All of those questions are explored, right up to the final - and rather disturbing - last page.

      There are so many thrillers around, and it is hard to find a fresh plot which keeps reader in the dark, without being irritatingly obtuse. It’s a fine line, of managing to offer up new surprises without giving the whole game away. This novel manages it quite elegantly. There were a few unexplained facts, and the villain was over the top vile and cruel, but people like that actually do exist. Will read more by this author for sure.

      This psychological thriller is told from two points of view. Beth tells her story beginning in 1981 and Clara tells her story beginning in 2017. Beth talks about her and her husband Doug's strong desire for a child and their disappointment when she doesn't conceive. Then the story switches to when their miracle child Hannah is born and Beth's gradual realization that something is terribly wrong with her. She talks about Hannah's lack of emotion and love of causing pain. She talks about fights and fires. She talks about her terror when she gets pregnant and has a son named Toby. She fears for his life because of seven-year-old Hannah's animosity.Meanwhile Clara tells her story of waking up one morning and finding the her live-in boyfriend Luke hasn't come home from work. At first, she isn't too worried. They live a pretty carefree partying lifestyle and Luke could have partied too late and crashed at a friend's place. But then she recalls that he has an important interview at work and wouldn't miss it. She contacts their best friend Mac to see if he has any insight but he doesn't seem very worried.After contacting all of his friends, she decides to travel to his parents' home to see if Luke had gone there. She didn't want to give them the news that he was missing over the phone. She has a very close relationship with Luke's parents - much closer than her relationship with her own parents. But Luke isn't there.As the days go on, Clara gets more and more worried. When Mac tells her that Luke had an affair with a co-worker, Clara is shattered. She fell for him so completely and hasn't stopped looking at him through rose-colored glasses for the whole three years of their relationship. The more she looks into Luke's past the more she begins to wonder if she ever knew him at all.Meanwhile, Beth is chronicling Hannah's growth since the day she overheard Beth and someone talking about something that Beth is feeling very guilty about. This sets Hannah on a path of harassment and revenge for things she perceives as slights. At first the two stories seem very separate, but gradually the connections begin to come clear. This was a very twisty story filled with secrets and lies. No one, with the possible exception of Clara, is without substantial guilt. I was impressed with the amount of damage one sociopath can do to a bunch of lives. Of course, other characters' bad decisions and crimes did give her fertile ground to sow her own brand of chaos.The Readers Guide at the end of the story asks if rehabilitation would be possible for Hannah but I don't see how. She certainly feels no remorse for her actions. I think, like Beth, that something essential is missing in Hannah. I don't think empathy and emotion can be developed in sociopaths even though they can act like they have them. This was an entertaining, but sad, thriller. So many broken lives and relationships. There are a few bright, hopeful outcomes. But Hannah is just waiting to get out of prison to ruin more lives.

      This twisty psychological thriller is told on 2 separate timelines, the present and the 1980s, and even if you figure out what one has to do with the other, the ending hits you like a freight train.
      In the present, Clara and Luke have recently set up housekeeping and are madly in love when suddenly he disappears. At first Clara thinks he may have just had a few drinks and is sleeping it off somewhere but it soon becomes apparent that something more sinister is afoot. When Clare reports him missing, she learns some unsettling secrets that she was happier not knowing, and as she takes it upon herself to search for clues in his disappearance she learns some disturbing details that make her question how well she really knows him.
      In the 1980s we meet Beth, a woman who longs to be a mother and who is finally blessed with a daughter that she and her husband Doug love more than life itself, even when it becomes apparent that their beautiful little girl doesn't seem to love them back, is unable to make friends, and terrorizes the other tots in daycare. Eventually we learn what these tow timelines have in common but even then, this tangled web of lies holds another shocking secret.

      Amazing! Thank you again Secret Santa!! Absolutely loved this book. This was my first book by Camilla Way and I cannot wait to read others. I think that this is the best new author I have found so far this year. The level of suspense was perfect and pulled me in right away. I actually suspected the ending a few times but the author was able to throw in enough doubt that lead you in a different direction perfectly.

      This might be the first book of the month pick that truly disappointed in me. I am definitely in the minority in thinking that this book was not good. I am sorry but everyone seemed to make horrible and often times stupid decisions and I was so annoyed that a book that seemed to have so much potential to be a good thriller just went way off the rail. It was one ridiculous thing after another. I am so annoyed with myself for thinking that the next chapter will get better and so on. But at least it was written well. Just a horrible story with some really dumb characters. Maybe I’ll edit this review when I feel less annoyed.

      Plenty of little mysteries in this story. A number of narrators too: Beth, Clara and Hannah herself. A story that unfolds over 31 years, and several settings. So it keeps the reader on their toes.The focal point is Luke's disappearance and what Clara finds out stems from her attempts to find him.An engrossing read but I wasn't entirely convinced by the final pages.

      The Lies We Told by Camilla Way  is a compelling and very clever mystery.

      Clara Haynes is worried when she wakes up to discover her boyfriend, Luke Lawson, is not at home. Her concern intensifies when he also fails to show up at work where he is up for a big promotion.  She contacts Luke's best friend, Joe "Mac" McKenizie, who has not heard from him either. After learning Luke's parents and friends have no idea where he is, Clara finally notifies the police of his disappearance. After discovering Luke is being stalked and has received hundreds of threatening emails, the case is given a higher priority. Clara and Mac decide to investigate Luke's disappearance on their own and Clara is stunned by the information they uncover.

      Interspersed with the chapters taking place in the present are passages that take place in the mid 1980s. Beth is very concerned about her young daughter Hannah's increasingly terrifying behavior. Hannah bullies her classmates and her actions are becoming more violent. Beth tries to convince her husband, Doug, their daughter needs professional help, but in his presence, Hannah is nothing but sweet and loving. By the time Doug believes his wife, Beth is caught in an untenable position that could destroy her family. Will Hannah get to the help she needs?

      The Lies We Told is a suspense-laden and riveting mystery. Clara's urgency as she tries to locate Luke is palpable. Dismayed by the changes in Luke's family, she does not know whom to trust. Beth's chapters are mesmerizing and readers will be captivated by her desperation to prevent Hannah from harming the rest of the family. Camilla Way brings these two seemingly disconnected story arcs together in the novel's stunning  finale.  Fans of the genre will absolutely devour this twist-filled mystery.

      I believe I first heard about The Lies We Told by Camilla Way on Goodreads. When I read the book synopsis, I knew it was a book I had to read. I'm so glad I did because I loved this book.

      The pacing in The Lies We Told was brilliant. It is such a fast paced psychological suspense novel! I found myself having a hard time putting this book down. Never once did it slow down to the point of being boring, and it never went too too quickly where I had no clue what was going on.

      I really did enjoy the plot and the world building. For the most part, The Lies We Told is written fabulously. The plot is interesting., and I loved how it changed from us reading about Clara to hearing from Beth's point of view throughout the story. Clara's boyfriend Luke goes missing. She knows he had a stalker, but he never took it seriously. Clara becomes even more worried when she finds some worrying emails sent to Luke. As she starts to learn more and more about Luke's past, she puts herself in danger, and she's worried that Luke may be in even more danger. There were so many plot twists and turns in The Lies We Told. I loved it! This book had me guessing, and I was never right! There's even a plot twist towards the very end. All but one of my questions were answered. I won't go too much into it because it would spoil almost all of the book, but I will just say that I was left wondering why the police didn't do one thing once the truth had been revealed. I would have thought it would have been protocol if someone suggests it. Sorry for leaving you hanging, but I can't go into much detail.

      The characters in The Lies We Told were so well written and fleshed out. I could relate to Clara a lot. I loved how far she was willing to go to find out about Luke. Hannah was another great character to read about. I found her to be the most interesting character of the story if I'm honest. I also enjoyed reading about Mac. He seemed like a great friend. Luke's parents also seemed very sweet, and I would sympathize with Beth when she would talk about Hannah. However, keep in mind that with this book, some of the characters aren't who and what they seem which was great!

      Trigger warnings for The Lies We Told include profanity, cheating, blackmail, lying, kidnapping, mentions of sex, alcohol and some drug use, mental illness, death, murder, and violence.

      Overall, The Lies We Told is such a brilliant book. It's got a fascinating plot, very interesting characters, and fantastic plot twists that will leave you scratching your head! I would definitely recommend The Lies We Told by Camilla Way to everyone aged 17 . I really enjoyed it.

      This one was engaging and a good read overall. I read this one in nearly one sitting because it was that good. The plot itself is engaging and the mystery aspect of it kept you guessing and wondering until nearly the end of the book - and even then there’s still potential after that. Although the plot was really good, and the writing itself was also well done, I didn’t think much about the characters. Which goes to show how well the writing is. You shake your head at some of the decisions made by some of these characters (all in the name of putting on a good face) but you just feel compelled to follow along to see what will happen. There’s plenty of twists here and there and a breadcrumb trail of clues to follow but what you think might happen, might actually surprise you.You may, or may not sympathize with Hannah. She had it pretty rough after finding out a life changing truth. On the other hand her actions and personality made you see red. She was awful to the core. If you have ever read Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage, you’ll find similarities between the two girls who are ironically, both named Hannah (spelling varies).There is room for a sequel, although I think it should end here. Sure, there’s an open ending but it’s not a cliffhanger. It may leave you with some questions but it’s a good enough ending to let things lie. A sequel may be overdoing it and stretching this story unnecessarily.Such an engrossing read. Give yourself time to read this. Once you open it, you won’t be able to stop reading until it’s done.

      I liked this book for the most part. It is two stories, two timelines and they intersect. I was shocked at how they came together. I liked the characters. What I didn't like the language, it seemed unnecessary. I was annoyed in the beginning of the book with the use of the language and then in the middle it seemed to have stopped, but picked up a bit at the end. I know this seems like a minor critique but it took away from the book a little bit. Overall, I enjoyed this book.

      This story hooked me from the first page. It is told in two POVs, one from the past and one in the present. The stories flow, seemingly in their own individual plots. I knew they had to come together eventually, and when they did, WOW! This book had everything that I love in a psychological thriller. There was a truly evil sociopath, one who was incredibly anti-social and scary. There were also the victims, those secondary characters who were so well developed, that I cared about them, was rooting for them and found myself racing through the book to find out what was going to happen to them.

      Beth and Doug have finally gotten their wish of a child after many, many years of waiting and trying. But within a few years Beth is aware that something is not right with their beautiful, charming Hannah. Hannah starts exhibiting strange, cruel and worrisome behavior at the age of 3 when she intentionally seriously injures her mother. As she gets older, her behaviour worsens and when her little brother, Toby, is born, puts him at risk. She has no friends and because of her behaviour, neither does her mother. Doug, does not see these behaviours and this puts a rift in Doug's and Beth's relationship. The second story is told from the perspective of Clara, a young woman who has recently moved in with her boyfriend Luke. After only living together for a short time, Luke doesn’t come home and he doesn’t call. Clara reaches out to his parents and friends but no one has seen him or heard from him. She and Mac, her and Luke’s best friend, start to investigate further and further into Luke’s life and uncovering things that they had no idea they would find. Luke’s family, all have secrets they are hiding, but what are they? Clara knows that Luke had a sister, Emily, who left the family when she was 18 and hasn’t been heard from for twenty years? When Emily contacts Clara, it opens another can of worms to investigate.

      This book was well paced and kept me interested. I wanted to find out how these stories connected, and when it was revealed, I was surprised. There are so many secrets and lies it will make your head spin. My one complaint was the ending. Is there going to be a sequel? The ending did seem a bit rushed and left too many loose ends for my liking, which is why I rated it 4 instead of 5 stars.

      How I love sociopaths in books. This book was told in a past and present narrative and I had no idea what one had to with the other for probably 65% of the book.Clara’s boyfriend, Luke, goes missing in the present and in the past Beth and Doug finally have the baby (Hannah) that they’ve tried to have for years. The two stories eventually intertwine in a way that lets the story keep on giving.

      Holy smokes! The Lies We Told is a rollercoaster of a ride with so many twists and turns. I devoured the book in one day. All you need to know is that Clara’s boyfriend, Luke, goes missing. Sorry for being brief, but the less you know the better the book will be.

Clara’s live-in boyfriend Luke suddenly and inexplicably goes missing. While trying to track him down, she is shocked to discover how little she actually knew about the man she loved, how much he had kept from her.From the very first line, the book grabbed my attention. It is very well-written, with vivid descriptions of settings and characters. Past events blend in seamlessly. There are two separate narrators, Beth and Clara. There are two timelines, 1986 and 2017. Finally, there are two geographical locations, Cambridgeshire and London. Initially, Beth, Clara, and their lives are separate and disconnected...until they converge.I LOVED this book! There were so many twists that I didn’t see coming. The only thing I didn’t like was the end, which felt somewhat rushed and abrupt. I thought I still had pages left, but they were discussion questions and an excerpt of Watching Edie. Still, I eagerly await her next book.

      I was not initially sure of this book as I couldn't get an edge on one of the characters. Then it clicked.Well written, tense moments. Dark secrets. When you think you've heard them all, there appears another one. You develop friendships, then adversaries, then you realize you could be wrong. Keeps you glued to the page attempting to just find out. Loved it.At points you are talking out loud to the characters (your friends) telling them what to do or not to do.       I have not read Watching Edie but after reading this book, I want to check it out. There was a dark edge to this book that comes with psychological thrillers. This book is told from two character perspectives of Clara and Beth. Both women were good. I found them engaging and could hold the leads in the story. I like that Clara did not come off as weak and let everyone else around her support her or solve the case. She did a lot of the heavy lifting. Where Beth is concerned. Her parts of the story reminded me of the book, Baby Teeth. Hannah is an evil girl. It would be hard to love but at the same time hate your child.The mystery surrounding Luke, his family, Beth, and Hannah is where the grittiness comes into play. I kept trying to piece together all of the pieces to solve the whole puzzle before the author revealed it in the story. Yet, I think I figured it out a little bit before the reveal. I was not disappointed by the ending. Beware "The Lies We Told" as revenge is a killer.

      Dark, disturbing, but so incredibly entertaining! I don't think I have ever used the word delicious to describe a book but it fits because I totally ate this one up. This was one of those really enjoyable reading experiences and I can't wait for others to read it so I can hear their thoughts on the book.So this book uses dual timelines to tell the story. In the present day, Clara's boyfriend, Luke, has disappeared. The book switches between that story line and the past in which Beth is having a difficult time (that's putting it mildly) raising her daughter Hannah. While you could say the main mystery would be what happened to Luke, there were so many other things that keep you guessing throughout the book. Definitely a lot of layers to the story.Now would I say the story is perfect? No. I do have some slight problems with some of the stuff that happened near the end of the book. However, it did not affect my overall enjoyment of the story which is why I am giving it 5 stars. I picked up this book wanting to be entertained and it definitely delivered. This for sure is one of my favorite books I have read this year. Highly recommend giving this one a try if you like mysteries. Thank you to Berkley for sending me an advance copy!       I read this author's first book, Watching Edie, and absolutely loved it. It was a very slow sort of quiet book, with major creep factor, that just pulled you right into the story. This book - very different feel. This one is much more of a steady, frantic pace. Both were serious page turners all the way through but so very different in feel. In this one there are two POVs, which normally aren't my thing, but the author does a great job in creating a different voice for each. Also done so very well is the clue dropping and misdirection and as you read and think you know what is going on, with the next chapter you begin to doubt yourself and before you know it you are going right down a different path. Camilla Way might just be my new favorite author. Trigger warning: the very first scene is animal abuse, but then it's fine from there.Many, many thanks to the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
