About this audiobook

When Sylvia looks out her bedroom window at night and sees a child face down in the pond next door, she races into her neighbour's garden. But the pond is empty, and no one is answering the door.

Wondering if night feeds and sleep deprivation are getting to her, she hurriedly retreats. Besides, the fact that a local child has gone missing must be preying on her mind. Then, a week later, she hears the sound of a man crying through her bedroom wall.

The man living next door, Sam, has recently moved in. His wife and children are away for the summer and he joins them at weekends. Sylvia finds him friendly and helpful, yet she becomes increasingly uneasy about him.

Then Sylvia's little daughter wakes one night, screaming that there's a man in her room. This is followed by a series of bizarre disturbances in the house.

Sylvia's husband insists it's all in her mind, but she is certain it's not-there's something very wrong on the other side of the wall.

Great book but the narrator ruined it with such bad Irish accents and pronunciations!!

Decent enough story once it got going, however, badly let down by the narrator. She constantly spoke almost rhyme like the whole way through the book, really very irritating.

I struggled between three and four stars on this one. I was enthralled and finished this pretty much in one day, so I'd say "thriller" would be a great description of this book. It almost felt like it was two books, though, or maybe the two halves were written by two different authors. The first half has mystery and some thriller, but contained a lot of the character development and every day life, building up the suspense and introducing all manner of suspects, not to mention making the reader wonder who is sane and who is not. The main character starts getting into her neighbor's business and even spying a little, along with most of her neighbors; it reminded me a little of Paula Hawkins's The Girl on the Train in that respect. But then the second half is completely flipped with a major twist and suddenly you've gone from the Disney's Mad Tea Cup Ride to Kings Island's The Beast. It got pretty violent, which isn't my thing, but the pace picked up and everything started happening so quickly that I had to read into the early morning to complete it. I also hated all of the characters except Sylvia and her husband Tom. I could not relate to anybody and so I didn't care about their stories. I think that's why the first half felt so long and a bit uninteresting. I am so glad I stuck it out, though. At the end of the day, I decided to go with 4 stars because this is also the author's debut and I was absolutely blown away by how good this was for a debut. Thank you to Poolbeg Crimson via Library Thing for a free digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I enjoyed this book but it was spoiled by the narrator - at first I thought it was set in Belfast, not Dublin. Who on earth assigns a British RP English speaker to narrate a book set in Ireland??
I put that aside to follow the story which was slow to get going but moved quickly once the reveal happened. Some plot holes. Who would separate from a spouse where kids are involved, communicating only through text? Did Sylvia’s colleague have anything to do with the main plot? I may have missed a couple of chapters in the middle but I think that was unresolved. All in all I enjoyed it. But please, British publishing / media companies; Ireland is not England SNC you can’t fudge the accents, at least not this badly!

I really liked this book. The story did move between time frames but it wasn't difficult to follow. I liked that there was a small side story that was disclosed at the end of the book. One wasn't sure whether Sylvia was stressed and was imagining what was happening to her or if something actually was. Scary book. Would read more from this author.

For a debut novel i thought this was quite good. In the beginning i found this to be a bit boring, and sylvia was a very unlikable character, but as the book progressed and around the half way mark it got more interesting. I was a bit disappointed with the ending, as i was expecting more of a showdown, and the language at times was a bit confusing to me (irish lingo?), but overall it left a good impression.

A good thriller with a few twists. Chapters were written from different viewpoints and some characters were necessarily obscured to preserve plot points.Personally I found that some of the sub-plots were less than necessary and didn't add to the story for me, but the main plot was captivating.*i received a copy of this book in exchange for a review

I really enjoyed this book, started off really slow but had enough twists and turns to keep me reading.

This started with a pop but got slower and slower and less interesting as it progressed. Too many characters that were difficult to differentiate at times. Too many sub-plots that didn't do a whole lot to move the story forward. A whole lot of awkward English and strange dialogue for my taste. The author is not from the US, obviously, at it shows. It doesn't make it bad, just difficult to read. I felt very disconnected from the characters and lost interest about half way through. I kept wondering when something would actually happen. It's a pass from me.

This book is so full of suspense that once started, I couldn't put it down. And since I was lucky enough to get a Kindle version, I always had it with me & read it on my phone.

Sylvia has two young children and has just returned to work from maternity leave, only to find a large sum of money missing from one of the accounts she manages. Short on sleep and tired to the bone trying to deal with it all, one night she looks out only to see what seems to be the body of a small child in the neighbor’s pond. But after she gets downstairs and tries unsuccessfully to rouse the neighbor, she finds nothing in the pond. Then she hears the sounds of a man crying through the walls, and things start changing in her house at night. Is she sleep walking, hallucinating, is it real, or is she being gas lighted? Sam has just moved in next door. His wife and kids are staying in their former home while he does improvements on the new house after work, while he visits them on the weekends. Sam has done well, but not hugely well, as a money manager. Kate is Sam’s wife; she is a bored housewife with young children. She is tired of having to be a full time mother, especially with Sam not around during the week. She wants to have some adult conversation and fun. Her brother, Miller, doesn’t have boundaries, and shows up at random times despite being told not to. The story alternates between these people. At first I got a bit confused when the POV shifted and then figured out that the shift took us back in time to when the first POV had started. There is a huge amount of tension in this psychological thriller, although it comes in swells and troughs- not all the narrative threads are as intense as the others. I found it compelling reading, although I can only give it four stars out of five. It just doesn’t have the smoothness that a more practiced writer could have (this is Mara’s first novel). I admit I was disappointed that it was not supernatural horror, but that was my fault for not reading blurbs finely enough, and not something I’m taking a star off for!

I really enjoyed this read! I was quite startled by the time I got to the end, I wanted more! I would recommend. It started a bit slow, and at times it was a bit difficult to figure out which character was talking. I think the side storylines could have been completed more (what happened to the child? what happened to the women in the end of the book? what happened to such a horrible man? What did Michael know about Georgia and Noel?) but I would recommend. It was definitely a page turner once you got started. I would say it is a thriller. The characters had a few annoying traits but generally, people have those traits. I'd recommend.

I had a really hard time getting into this book. The story line just didn't catch me.

This was a terrific read- it was a little slow going for me at first, but if you can make it past the first 50 pages or so, it's hard to put down after that. I would have liked to have seen some of the side story arcs (Kate's brother, the neighbor, etc) fleshed out a little more- perhaps Ms. Mara will continue with those in another book. Look forward to seeing more from her!
