- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved the story . It left me wanting more.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Very boring and anti-climactic compared to the first book. I kept waiting for the inevitable reveal, and the fallout from that lasted less than a chapter, with only one chapter left in the book. They also never really resolved the family drama of them falling into the same pattern, and pretending that Bryon did nothing wrong. The choice to focus on a romance was indeed A Choice. It took away a lot of the agency from Virginia's character, and a lot of her drive. Nothing wrong with romance plots of course, but all of the actual meaty, dramatic elements were pushed aside in favour of a gooey, poorly set up summer romance between two teens. It was just kind of boring overall.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a sequel, but it reads just fine on its own. It is a very realistic YA contemporary that does not shy aware from hard issues.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In this follow up to The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things, six months have passed. Virginia is feeling a bit better about herself, but only a bit. Then she meets Sebastian on line at the bagel store and her heart goes 'thump'. But she leaves without exchanging contact information and her thoughts of ever seeing him again vanish. It is serendipidous that they do meet, but of course, there are serious snags in this would-be romance. There are also family issues that, lying dormant for six months, ressurect themselves causing familial turmoil.Carolyn Mackler adds enough background information throughout the book to insurre readers don't necessarily have to read the first book. However, it is probably a wise thing to read The Earth, My Butt.... It's a very enjoyable two book series. Just beware, you're liable to hate Virginia's therapist mom...who has no clue how teens works, primarily Virginia.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Virginia Shreves is back in this sequel to The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things. She meets a new guy who seems really into her. And her brother, accused by a college friend of rape, is arrested, throwing her family into turmoil. When her sister returns from her stint in Africa, Georgia realizes that maybe she isn't really the black sheep of the family after all - that nobody is as perfect as she thought. And her new boyfriend makes things both happier and more complicated.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Virginia has always been curvy, and her feelings about her body have long been complicated. Her family’s attitudes toward her weight haven’t helped. She was thrilled to find a boyfriend (see The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big, Round Things), but now she’s not sure she even likes the guy all that much. If she breaks up with him, will she ever be part of a couple again? Then, family drama breaks out, not to mention friend drama, summer employment, and the dreaded driving test.I read The Earth, My Butt... back in library school (how is that even 10+ years ago already?), and this book picks up right where that one left off. I’d be interested to see how that works when reading the two books together, since this one name-checks stuff like Minecraft and Hamilton, placing it pretty definitely in the present. On the other hand, I have only the vaguest memories of the earlier book and had no problem following this one, so it works just fine as a stand-alone. I read this all in one evening, so obviously I liked it a lot. Great characters, interesting conflicts, good pacing — if realistic YA is your thing, this one’s worth reading.
