About this audiobook
A deft and unflinching coming-of-age story about an angry teenage girl and her discovery of the nature of the biggest game of all, and what it really means to be a team player, a sister, a daughter, and a born survivor—from the acclaimed author of Triburbia and Boy Alone.
“It’s a dark and thrilling exploration of changing relationships and rivalries and times the desires of your heart don’t necessarily line up with the expectations of real life.” —Marie Claire
True has a singular path: to be the greatest soccer player of her generation. But to realize her dream, she’ll need to make the Under-17 National Team, then the Residency Program, and the ultimate: the US Women’s National Team. Otherwise she can say goodbye to the Women’s World Cup. And True will do whatever it takes to be the top girl on the field.
True has to stay focused because her family is crumbling. With the loss of her mother, True is forced to take care of her autistic younger sister while her grieving father wastes his time gambling. And high school isn’t much better. While True’s teammates are getting taller and growing up, she’s hardening around the edges, at a loss for what it means to be a typical teen girl. But when she’s in the game, the anxieties of family and fitting in just fade away. True—with her soft feet and deft first touch—can knock anyone off the ball. And more importantly, she can throw an elbow harder than anybody else. On the pitch, she’s a soccer player first, a sister second. On the pitch, she’s free.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jeannie Shiver works at Drackwood Research where there are on-going experiments being held on New Species. She is working as a tech, drawing blood which allows the study of treatments being conducted. Jeannie has a lot of sympathy for New Species which is one of the reasons that she continues to work there. She is funneling information to the FBI so that they can raid the facility and make arrests and free the subjects. There is one particular New Species male that has caught Jeannie's attention, 710. He has been so brave, but the employees beat on him so hard so that they can test the drugs that are supposed to speed healing. There isn't anything Jeannie can do without the top boss of the facility becoming suspicious of her. So she is very careful how she helps. One day the boss corners her and threatened to have 710 killed unless Jeannie helped them with one of the drugs that they were testing. She finally broke and agreed to be a test subject. There was so much pain involved for Jeannie, but she never wanted 710 (True) to know about that or the fact that she was helping him in the fashion. Finally the facility was raided. Jeannie had know that they were coming so she arranged to have the power turned off to the area where the New Species subjects were being held. In doing this she ended up killing two men, but not before one of them managed to shoot her in the side. The 'good guys' entered the room where she was just as she was about to lose consciousness from lack of blood. The story is very well written, with great characterizations and a fantastic plot. I think this is the best New Species book yet!! I loved it.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Spoiler alert. I love this series. However when an author starts repeating story lines, it's time for the author to quit the series. This book is in so many ways similar to Fury's book. Species locked up. Woman spy. Species hate woman. But wait woman really helping. Then love. Yea Fury's book just different names.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Paranormal Romance/ Erotica. New Species 11. Jeanie thought she was an inside informer at Mercile but there is no record of it. Good
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5If memory serves, the last book in this series was really good which didn't come through in this instalment, unfortunately. I didn't think either True or Shiver were that great together and sometimes things just came off a little forced to me.
